RICHTER. - Near Hespler, Ont., on the 14th of Nov. 1899 of dropsy, Chas Richter, age 83 years, 3 months and 28 days . Funeral on the sixteenth. Buried at Wanner's M. H., Waterloo Co., Ont. Services by Bishop Daniel Wismer in German and by Jacob Woolner, Sr., in English. Texts, in German Rev. 14: 13, in English, Job 19: 25 first clause, "I know that my Redeemer liveth." Deceased left a widow and seven children to mourn the loss of an affectionate husband and father. May God comfort the aged sister. He was a member of the Mennonite Church.

Sallie Mosser, "was first married to Samuel Shupe and after his decease to Charles Richter. They resided a little east of Hespeler where he was engaged in farming. To her and her first husband was born one daughter named Mary who was married to Jacob Holm but she died some years ago. Of her second husband there were two sons named Peter and John."

In 1824 they moved to Canada and settled on a farm adjoining that of David Pannebecker's near Hespeler where she died November 22nd, 1858, and he died (The house on the old "Mosser Farm" was accidentally destroyed by fire and he was burnt with the house) July 28th, 1872. To them was born a family of eight children"

Sad Affair near Hespeler

A most melancholy event took place on Sunday morning near the R.R. track about 1-1/2 miles above Hespeler. An old man said to be about 86 years of age of the name of Musser, occupied two apartments by himself, contiguous to the farm house in which his daughter, son-in-law and family resided. It was customary for some of the family before retiring for the night to visit the old man's rooms. On looking in on Sunday night at bedtime, he was found asleep and left undisturbed. About 2 o'clock on Sunday morning the family was aroused by the scream of one of the children who had been awaked by the suffocating influence of smoke in the house. They had barely time to make their escape from the house before it was enveloped in flames, and without securing even sufficient clothing. The rooms occupied by the old man were already burnt down, and on Dr. Swan, being called, all that could be found of the old man were a few charred bones, which were collected into a box of about a foot square. The fire is supposed to have been entirely accidental, but how it originated cannot be ascertained. Dr. Swan supposes from the remains of the old man being found near the door of the apartment in which he slept, that he had been suffocated and fallen down in an attempt to gain the door. An inquest was held on Monday when a verdict in accordance with the above facts were returned.

Jacob Mosser, "was one of the early pioneer settlers of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, to which his father had moved from Switzerland at a very early date. We find that they were members of the Mennonite faith which may have been the cause of their settling in Lancaster County. At so late a date and in the absence of all records it is hard to obtain all the desired information pertaining to this family. We could not obtain names of parents of Jacob. Tradition has it that his name was Peter and that he emigrated to America about the year 1754. His family is said to have consisted of seven or eight children. We know the names of two, namely: Anna, born February 8th, 1748, and died May 8th, 1823, who was married to old Henry Wanner (See Henry Wanner's family), and Jacob, who was born about the year 1751. He resided in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and was married and had a family. The names of two of the children were Jacob and Peter. Of Jacob we have no information, quite likely his descendants are yet residing in Lancaster and adjoining counties of Pennsylvania. Of Peter we have more information"

Henry Wanner, "the first by this name who settled in Waterloo County, was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, May 12th, 1749. In 1774 he was married to Anna Mosser who was born February 8th, 1748. In spring, 1810, they moved to Canada and settled in Waterloo County, near Hespeler, on the farm now in possession of John W. Martin. Here they resided until their death. He died February 12th, 1835, and she died May 8th, 1823. Their family consisted of eight children, all born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania"
