When a young man he entered his father's mills in the town of Waterloo where he served his apprenticeship as miller and has been connected with the mills ever since. In 1879 he, in company with Mr. A. Kraft, purchased the valuable mills (known as Union Mills) from his father and has since built additions to it and has made improvements in the latest and most improved machinery so as to have a daily capacity of nearly 300 barrels of flour of the most superior quality. He has served his town and county in the municipal council for a number of years, serving in the capacity as councillor for seven years, reeve for three years, warden of the county one year, and mayor for two years. On June 11th, 1867, he was married to Lydia Ann Bowman. They reside in the town of Waterloo and have had a family as follows"

WILLIAM SNIDER, Warden of the County of Waterloo, is one of the most enterprising and progressive business men of Waterloo, the town of his present residence as well of his birth, which event occurred in 1845. He is a son of Elias Snider, whose connection with the milling interests of this town have been before adverted to. William is one of a family of twelve children, eight of whom were sons. He learned the milling trade in his youth, and has ever since continued his connection therewith, being senior member of the firm of William Snider & Co., whose business is extensive and successful. Mr. Snider has been for some years an active participant in municipal affairs, as a result of which he now holds the Wardenship of the county ; and in all other matters of local or general interest, he has ever made his influence felt in promoting the material, intellectual or moral status of the community in which he resides.

A list of Snider's business involvement suggests his influence within the community. He was president of the Waterloo Mutual Fire Insurance Company, director for 10 years of the Mutual Life Assurance Company (Clarica), and vice-president of Waterloo Manufacturing Company. He was a charter member of the Waterloo Board of Trade, a member of the Waterloo Horticultural Society and sat on the Waterloo Board of Park Management from 1890-1906. Snider first served on village council beginning in 1873. He continued as alderman for another two years when the Town of Waterloo was incorporated in 1876. From 1878-1881 Snider held the position of town reeve. He was elected mayor in 1885-1886 and again in 1891-1892. During his two terms in office, Snider was instrumental in establishing a weekly market in the basement of the Town Hall, in creating a formal Town Fire Company and in securing the installation of gas lighting. Under his guidance, Council also approved a proposal by the town's first mayor Moses Springer to commission portraits of former mayors for display in the Council Chambers. Rev. Elias Snider "was born September 3rd, 1815. In his boyhood days he took great interest in his father's business. By the time he was twenty-one years of age he was not only a practical miller but also a thorough business man. In 1851 he purchased from the late Barnabas Devitt the large farm containing 310 acres of land, for Ð1500 and in 1853 he purchased the large grist mills now in possession of Wm. Snider & Co., together with 320 acres of land for Ð3500 In 1854 be again sold the large real estate in the town of Waterloo and purchased the "Musselman Farm" about one mile north of Waterloo, to which place he then moved. In 1860 he purchased the German Mills together with 669 acres of land. The same year he, in company with Samuel S. Schneider, regained possession of the Waterloo Mills and continued in business until 1879 when they sold out to the present proprietors. Mr. Snider now retired from business. On November 10th 1835, he was married to Hannah, daughter of John and Hannah (Bergey) Bingeman. She was born August 1st 1815, and died December 23rd, 1893. In 1874 Mr. Snider was ordained to the ministry of the Mennonite body which position he held until his death which took place April 24th, 1890. His family consisted of twelve children, "

Erb Street (David Eby) Mennonite Church

Early services which began around 1837 were held in private homes. Land at the corner of Erb Street and Hallman Road, where the present-day cemetery is located, was donated by David Eby Sr. on July 14, 1851; a red brick church known as David Eby's Church was built in the same year. The first minister in the new church was Jacob M. Oberholtzer who served from 1852 to 1874. He was followed by Elias Schneider (1874-1889), Jonas Snider (1892-1900), Newton Weber (1921-1923), and Noah Hunsberger (1923-1929).

Due to a difference of opinion in the David Eby congregation, Sunday School classes were held at first in a private home, that of Levi Groff, beginning in 1887. The dissension which resulted culminated in a division in the church in 1889; the minister, Elias Schneider, and the deacon, Menno S. Shantz, left the church and joined with the Old Order Mennonites of Woolwich Township. The following year, 1890, saw the commencement of "Edification Meetings", which were held in the homes of members of the David Eby congregation. These meetings later became the Young People's Bible Meetings.

By the beginning of the twentieth century, it was recognized that the church building was either in need of repair or in need of complete replacement. Consideration was given to building a new church on the same site or on a site on King Street North. A decision was made to accept from Samuel S. Snider the donation of a parcel of land which was also on Erb Street, but nearer town. Excavation of the foundation for the new church began in the Spring of 1902. A dedication service was held on August 17, 1902. A parsonage was built in 1929 on land donated by Herbert Snider, the son of Samuel Snider. The church building was renovated and enlarged in 1949-1950; a dedication service was held on April 9, 1950. Further renovations were made in 1974..

SNIDER.-In Waterloo township, Waterloo county, Ontario, on the 24th of April, Pre. Elias Snider, aged 74 years, 7 months and 21 days. Buried on the 27th at Martin's church, Waterloo township, where a very large concourse of relatives and friends had gathered, and on which occasion Paul Martin and Bish. Abraham Martin spoke from Psalm 126: 5, 6: and Luke 2: 29,30.

Historic Building:
The original portion of the Erb-Kumpf House was built around 1812 by Abraham Erb, the founder of Waterloo, making it one of Waterloo's oldest homes. It was a three-bay structure facing a mill situated near the south-west corner of King and Erb Streets.
Abraham Erb came from Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, in 1806 and settled on Lots 14 and 15 of the German Company Tract, land which now comprises the central business district of Waterloo. He established a sawmill on Beaver (Laurel) Creek in 1808 and a grist mill in 1816. In 1828, he sold his mills and a considerable quantity of land to Jacob C. Snider.
Magdalene Erb sold the home to Barnabas Devitt, her adopted son, in 1835. His son Benjamin served as Mayor of Waterloo from 1881 to 1883.
An addition to the house was probably built by Devitt in 1849. A slight hump in the roof on the north side indicates the location at which it joins the original structure. The application of a vertical board and clapboard which does not align is further evidence that it was added at a later date. The second addition, probably built by Hoffman around 1855, included the two-storey verandah at the front.

Elias Snider acquired the home and later sold it to Christian Kumpf in 1869. Kumpf was a newspaper owner, Mayor of Waterloo from 1879-1880, as well as Postmaster for 42 years. He was instrumental in the establishment of the Dominion Life Assurance Company in 1889. His son Ford, who became affectionately known as "Mr. Waterloo", was born in the home in 1877 and assumed ownership in 1899. One of the community's most public-spirited citizens, he served as Treasurer of Waterloo and Clerk/Manager of the Water and Light Commission. He was President of the Waterloo Red Cross Society and The Dominion Life Assurance Company.
At present, the house demonstrates a mixture of architectural styles. Among its Georgian characteristics is the six-over-six window pane arrangement. The facade, with its two wings, treillage, Gothic barge board and Doric columns, reflects the Regency influence.
In 1979, the home was sold to a law firm which has maintained the integrity of the exterior. A third addition in keeping with the style of the building has since been constructed.<sup>1a

An Old Resident Gone

The Berlin News of Tuesday had the following: - "Mr. Moses Bowman, of Waterloo, died yesterday at the age of 71. He was an old and highly esteemed citizen of the county, native in fact, and leaves a large family of grown up children. He was up to eight or ten years ago one of our largest and prosperous famers, when he sold out to spend the remainder of his days free form the toils and cares of business, residing in Waterloo. His death will be regretted by a large number of friends and acquaintances."

Jacob B. Bowman, "the eldest son of John B. and Nancy (Bechtel) Baumann, was born near Freeport, December 26th, 1827. In 1850 he married Elizabeth, daughter of Abraham and Rachel (Baumann) Oberholtzer. She was born in Bloomingdale, October 8th, 1831. After their marriage they moved on his father's old homestead where they resided for twenty-four years, thence they moved to Freeport where they resided for nine years, from there they moved (in 1883) to Berlin where they still reside. In 1855 he entered the ministry and labored for the Lord's cause ever since. The first two years of his ministerial life were spent in the services of the Baptist church. In 1857 or 58 he joined the United Brethren in Christ for which body he proved himself to be an honorable and hard working servant both in and out of the pulpit. He is one of those men who are naturally gifted with an ability of making friends of all with whom they meet. As a minister he is much beloved by both his own and other congregations. His family consists of five children"

Although early meetings are reported to have begun in the Roseville area as early as 1860, it was not until 1881 that Rev. George Backus of New Dundee came to the area to conduct regular services in Roseville homes on Sunday evenings. The first services were held in the home of Mrs. Jacob Bricker; there were seven charter members in the group. Shortly after this time, c.1884, the present church building, which was originally of frame and dates to 1852 when it belonged to a Lutheran Congregation, was bought from the Wesleyan Methodists who had acquired it earlier from the Lutherans. The first United Brethren in Christ pastors after Rev. Backus were Revs. David B. Sherk and Jacob. B. Bowman. The congregation remained on a circuit until 1969 when the connection ended with New Dundee and Roseville became independent. A parsonage was purchased in 1971 and on September 9, 1973 a sod-breaking ceremony was held for the Christian Education addition. Dedication services were held on October 6, 1974.

A split in the United Brethren in Christ in 1889 resulted in two groups calling themselves by that name. One group joined the Congregationals in 1906. The other group remained United Brethren in Christ until November 16, 1946 when most congregations of the United Brethen in Christ organization joined with the Evangelical Church to form the Evangelical United Brethren Church - later to join with the United Church on January 1, 1968. This congregation is one of three United Brethren in Christ Churches in Waterloo County today. The others are Stanley Park in Kitchener, and New Dundee. The headquarters of the church is in Huntington, Indiana.

Although the building was originally of frame construction, remodelling and renovations have resulted in the church building of today.

A Bad Fall
Rev. J. B. Bowman, Church street fell while proceeding along the sidewalk in front of the post office this morning and striking his head with great force on the walk was rendered unconscious. He was taken home in a conveyance and a physician called in. At three o'clock in the afternoon he was still unconscious and no one was allowed to see him. We trust that his fall may not result seriously.

Pioneer Minister of Waterloo County Passes Away Wednesday

WAS IN HIS 83RD YEAR

The Grim Reaper called one of Waterloo County's, most widely known and respected residents, Rev. Jacob B. Bowman, who passed away at 12:30, Wednesday morning, at the residence of his son, Mr. A. O. Bowman, Church street, Berlin. The deceased has been in poor health for the last eighteen months and for the past two months has been in a helpless condition, his death being calm and peaceful. The late Jacob B. Bowman was born on the old Bowman homestead near Freeport, in 1827 and was 82 years and 24 days of age. He was a son of John Bowman, one of the pioneer settlers of this county. He was educated in the common schools and when about 30 years of age he entered the ministry of German Baptist church and afterwards united with the United Brethren denomination. He resided on the farm near Freeport, until 26 years ago, when he took up his residence in Berlin. The deceased was actively engaged in the ministry for many years and had charge of nearly all the U. B. circuits in this county. During his ministerial career he performed over 400 marriage ceremonies. Had the late Mr. Bowman lived until February 17th next, he would have been married 60 years. He is survived by his bereaved widow, who is in her 78th year and one son and one daughter, Mr. Abram O. Bowman, of the Customs staff and Mrs. (Rev.) W. A. Hutchison of Elyrie, Ohio. Three children died in infancy. The deceased was a brother of the late I. L. Bowman and the late Mrs. Amos Weber. He was a living example of a true Christlike life and his death removed a useful and highly esteemed citizen from this community. The funeral will take place from the residence of A. O. Bowman, 87 Church St., on Friday at 2 o'clock p.m. and proceed to Allan St., U.B. Church and thence to Mount Hope cemetery, for interment.

Post office closed - Freeport post office, which has been in existence for the last 50 years or more, was closed last week by order of the Postmaster General. This office, which was opened in the early sixties. In the old Academy building, (now a mass of ruins), had for its first postmaster Mr. Charles Lutz, only brother Mr. Hy. Lutz of this place. Later on it was transferred to the house now occupied by Mr. Adam Sherman, when Mr Jacob Lutz father the Lutz brothers took over the office. Next and turn as postmaster came Mr. John Schlichter, who was followed by Rev. J. B. Bowman with Miss Harriet Pogson as deputy. On the removal of Mr. Bowman to Berlin Miss Pogson assumed the duties of postmistress, which she filled for some years. On her resignation the office was moved to Centreville, with Mr. Ferdinand Latsch in charge. When he resigned Mr. Jacob Ebel was appointed in his stead, and for the past few years he has been our postmaster, until now on the closing of the office he has been relieved of its duties. With the introduction of the ever popular rural mail delivery there is no call for this office, and said it was closed. 'Aurevoir.
