    __________________________

Last Thursday death claimed one of our oldest and most highly-respected citizens in the person of Mr. Karl Ruppel. Although suffering from the effects of a light paralytic stroke for a number of years, deceased was able to be about until last February. Since then he was confined to his bed until death released him. He was born in Eila, Hessen, Germany [German states], in 1838. He came to Canada and settled in Elmira in 1864. Here he resided 61 years, practically grew up with the town and identifying himself with its growth and interests. Having enjoyed a good education in Germany he was able to make himself useful in may ways. Earlier he became identified with St. Paul's Lutheran congregation of which he was a consistent member throughout his life and in which he served long and faithfully as secretary. When the Canada District of the Lutheran Synod of Missouri, Ohio, and other states was organized, he became interested in its welfare and was later appointed Treasurer. He performed the exacting duties of this office faithfully as long as his health permitted. He was a carpenter by trade. When still a young man he took contracts for the erection of buildings. Later, in company with Mr. Hy. Fenner, he acquired the sash and door factory now owned by Messrs. Heimbecher & Jung. This was conducted for many years in connection with an undertaking and furniture business. In the year 1883 deceased erected the block now occupied by Mr. A. Werner and Messrs. Jury & Amy. After disposing of his interests in the factory of which he had become sole owner, he continued business in his block on Arthur Street. Later he turned his stock in trade over to his son, Mr. John S. Ruppel and became assistant in the Elmira Post Office of which his brother, John, was then postmaster. During the last few years he lived retired. In 1854 he was married to Elizabeth Schnarr, of Erbsville. With her he had seven children, four of whom pre-deceased him. He leaves to mourn the loss of a kind and provident father and husband, a widow, one son, and two daughters. In his prime, deceased was a an of energy, straightforward, honorable and reliable. He had the courage of his convictions and lived an honorable, Christian life. He was a useful citizen and was at one time a member of the Village Council. His name will long be associated with the history and growth of Elmira. He had reached the age of 77 years. His remains were interred in the Elmira Union Cemetery last Sunday afternoon, the local pastor of St. Pauls Church, Rev. R. A. Eifert, officiating. Rev. Boese of Berlin, president of the Canada District of the Lutheran Synod of Missouri, Ohio and other States, also gave a short address in recognition of the faithful servitude rendered by the deceased to that organization.

    Notes:

Mr. Allemang was born in Alsace-Lorraine, Germany, in 1823 and came to this country in 1834 when it was yet a `howling wilderness' settling near Heidelberg where he experienced some of the hardships that the early settlers had to contend with, and where he also got married to Miss Huehn, with whom he enjoyed over 50 years of married life, they having celebrated their golden wedding on the 14th of October, 1897. Twenty-nine years ago he moved to Elmira, buying the farm immediately east of the village, where he lived until a couple of months ago, when he and his aged partner came to reside with their daughter, Mrs. J. S. Ruppel in the village. Deceased had several attacks of sickness within the past couple of years but always rallied enough to be able to walk to the village. The disease of which he died was dropsy of the heart. Besides his aged wife he leaves six sons - William, George, Stephen and August of Elmira, John of Preston and Charles of Detroit - and two daughters, Mrs. Specker of Berlin and Mrs. J. S. Ruppel spoken of above. He was buried in Elmira this (Thursday) forenoon, the funeral being attended by a large number of friends and acquaintances.
