Police arrest a man in targeted shooting at plaza

by Liz Monteiro and Anam Latif Waterloo Region Record

CAMBRIDGE - A brazen shooting at a Cambridge plaza has left a young father dead, a man in jail and a neighbourhood afraid of the community around them.

"It's getting ugly," said Rev. Octavio Cidadao, a priest at Our Lady of Fatima Church on Elgin Street South, about a block away from the shooting at Brierdale Plaza on Monday night.

Waterloo Regional Police responded to a call of a man being shot in the area of Champlain Boulevard and Christopher Drive in Galt just after 8 p.m.

When police arrived in the parking lot, they found Bradley Pogue with serious injuries. He died later at Cambridge Memorial Hospital.

He was 24 and the father of a two-year-old girl.

Cadelle Kennedy, the toddler's mother, described Pogue as "an amazing guy."

"We had our problems but when it came down to it he loved his daughter with everything he had. I won't let him ever be forgotten, especially by his child," she said in an interview Tuesday.

Pogue, who also went by the name Bradley William, will definitely be missed, said Diana Lagerstrom, whose son was close to Pogue.

Pogue's daughter Zaelynn was his "entire world."

"He was one of those amazing stories where they turned their lives around after experimenting in drugs. He absolutely hated violence and was against drugs. He had a great family and amazing support," Lagerstrom said.

On Tuesday morning, police tape cordoned off a section of the plaza's parking lot with cruisers parked at two of the exits.

Police markers on the ground pointed to an area connected to the shooting.

In an unusual move, police released the name and photograph of a suspect, a 24-year-old Cambridge man.

Police described the man as dangerous and told the public not to approach him but rather call 911 immediately.

In a tweet, Insp. Mark Crowell said the shooting was targeted and that "there is no immediate concern for community safety."

Within an hour of releasing the suspect's name, police arrested a 24-year-old man in connection with the shooting.

A hold and secure was put on at least two schools in the Preston area \emdash Coronation Public School and William G. Davis Public School. The hold and secure was lifted after the arrest.

At the Euro Pastry and Bakery in the Christopher Drive plaza, local residents, including Cidadao, sipped on coffee and ate baked goods as officers stood outside.

"It's frightening. It's getting out of hand," Valentina Chora said of gun violence.

Kathy Haskell, who lives in the apartment building at 45 Brierdale Rd., said officers guarded a unit on her floor on Monday night and told her not to go outside.

"I asked the officer if the building was safe and she said it was," Haskell said.

Haskell was told to remain in her apartment as the suspect was still at large.

"It was very brazen to go out and shoot somebody in a parking lot when there are people around," Haskell said.

"His life was just beginning and now it's ended," she said.

Officers with the major crime unit, detectives and forensic identification continue to investigate. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call police at 519-570-9777, ext. 8666 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Youth guilty of murdering Bradley Pogue in Cambridge drug rip-off

    By Gordon PaulRecord Reporter

KITCHENER \emdash A youth who was 17 when he shot and killed Bradley Pogue in a drug rip-off has been found guilty of second-degree murder.

The teen, who can't be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, shot Pogue in the head with a handgun outside Brierdale Plaza in Cambridge on Nov. 19, 2018.

Pogue went to the plaza with older brother Codi Pogue to sell $1,700 of marijuana to the accused just after 8 p.m.

"What's worth more? A pound of weed or your life?" the youth told Pogue before firing two shots.

After Justice David Broad delivered his judgment on Wednesday, three days before Christmas, the Crown said it will be seeking an adult sentence.

Pogue, 24, lived in Cambridge and was the father of a two-year-old girl.

His mother, Hayley Schultz, previously described Pogue as a "brave, relentless, funny and thoughtful person. He had strong values and would do anything to protect his friends and family."

A date for sentencing has not been set.
