Notes:

Fred Budd was born in Ottawa and moved to Kitchener at ten years of age. Taking clarinet lessons, he joined the Waterloo Band under Professor C.F. Thiele, eventually becoming solo clarinetist. After serving five years in the Canadian Army, he built his new home in Preston and joined the Preston Legion Band. Later, he conducted the Milverton Band for six years and returned to Preston to direct the Legion Band for twenty years, retiring at age sixty.

Budd directed the Preston Opera Orchestra for twelve years and also played in the Johnny Kostigan Dance Band at The Leisure Lodge Night Club for nine years. Since retirement he has led the Galt Kiltie Band and the Ayr-Paris Band, taking the latter on an overseas trip to Germany and France.

In his conducting years in Preston, his band won first place three times in Class Two at the Canadian National Exhibition and five years in a row at the Kitchener Kiwanis Music Festival. For forty years he has led a band, comprised mostly of employees, which played annually at the Mutual Life Insurance Company Christmas party.

BUDD, Fred April 11, 1916 - April 12, 2010 How can we sum up your remarkable life of 94 years. It's impossible, but we'll try. Here are a few thoughts that will surely fall short in describing the life you enjoyed: Your wife Peggy, eight children, building a wonderful home together, so many great friends, volunteer service to the community, making music, teaching music to hundreds of young people, knowing how to tell a good story, delivering a great punch line, more music, band practice, parades, concerts, gardening, fishing from a riverbank with eager grandchildren, carpentry, reading, long walks, waltzing (Mom always said you were the best!), collecting and sharing memories, playing cards and cribbage, family picnics and reunions, humour of all kinds, any kind of pie (especially apple), world travel, more music, the farmers' market on Saturday mornings, breakfast with Jody once a week, a cold beer on a hot day, a quiet Scotch after dinner (or any other time), singing your favourite hymns in church, standing tall for the National Anthem, creating puns and endless one-liners, more music, getting married to Grace when you were just 82, visiting Disney World with her, more and more music, playing "Blue Moon" on the clarinet at your 90th birthday party (proving you're still the best), laughing at reruns of The Flintstones, never missing Remembrance Day services at the Preston Cenotaph, dreaming about one more fishing trip, acknowledging old age as a gift, cherishing memories of Mom and family, and praying there's a band in heaven that needs a clarinetist. Your family and friends are comforted in knowing you died peacefully after spending just one night in the hospital. You are now at rest, tired from a busy, productive and rewarding life. We will always be immensely proud of you, Dad, and we'll miss you more than you can imagine, just as we miss Mom. Frederick Frank Budd was predeceased by his first wife Peggy (Underhill) in 1996, son Peter in 2004, and second wife Grace Spottiswoode in 2008. He is survived by seven children: Nancy (Harry), Jody (Mary), Lynne, Rick (Doris), Catherine (Paul), Mike (Peg), and Ginnie, as well as 14 grandchildren and 10 great- grandchildren. A Memorial Service to celebrate Fred's life will be held on Saturday, April 17, 2010 at 2 p.m. from Saint John's Anglican Church, 567 Queenston Road, Cambridge. Cremation has taken place.
