Jacob Z. Detweiler," was born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, January 17th, 1820. He was married to Hannah Schlichter. They resided on a farm in the township of Waterloo, three miles south-west of Blair until shortly before his death when they moved to Berlin. He died March 16th, 1880. On October 12th, 1893 she was married to her second husband, Christian D. Rosenberger. The family of Jacob and Hannah Detweiler consisted of seven children"

His log cabin that he built on the east part of Lot BNS4 west of Blair was given by the Caryndale congregation to the Ontario Pioneer Community Foundation in the early 1970's, the restored cabin is now the weaver's shop at Doon Heritage Crossroads in Kitchener.

Historic Building:
Originally in Waterloo Township moved to Doon Hertiage Crossroads and now known as the "Weavery". Constructed about 1845 it is now used to recreate a how a indepenent weavery would operate.

Jacob Dettweiler," son of Jacob and Mary Margaret (Harley) Detweiler, was born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, March 27th, 1789. He moved to Canada in 1822 and settled near Blair, Ontario. On March 11th, 1813, he was married to Mary Gottwals. She was born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, May 12th, 1790, and died April 10th, 1816, leaving two children. After his first wife's decease he was married to Esther Ziegler, December 31st, 1816. She was born November 15th, 1794, and died January 23rd, 1883. He died August 7th, 1875. His family consisted of ten children"

Residence:
It is not known just when the first log meeting house of the Hallman congregation was built. However, on June 1, 1847 a one-acre plot of land, for a meeting house and burial ground, was deeded from Adam Unger to trustee, Jacob H. Detweiler. This land was east of Roseville on the northwest corner of Lot 31, Concession 11 of North Dumfries Township, and on the south side of the Blenheim or Roseville Road, which was built westerly from Galt. A stone cairn made up of old tombstones stands on this property today.<sup>1a

She was born November 24th, 1795, and died February 1st, 1876. They resided on a farm (now owned by John McDonald) one mile east of New Dundee, Ontario, where he died August 12th, 1849, leaving a family of eleven children"

Christian Schlichter, "(from some source of the Schlichter family the writer was informed that the father of old Christian, Daniel and John was Daniel and that they were members of the Mennonite Church), was a native of Switzerland, where he was born in 1761. He emigrated to America with his two elder brothers, Daniel (none of the descendants of Daniel and John are in Canada) and John, and settled in Franklin County, Pennsylvania. His brother, Daniel, who was born in 1759, settled in the same locality but the descendants of John settled in New York State. Christian was married to Mary Wanderbach and had a family of five children. Some time during the beginning of the present century he, together with his wife and family, moved to Canada and settled in Waterloo County, Ontario, a little north of Preston on the place known as "Green's Farm" where they died not many years after their coming to this country."

Beside the many hardships, labors and sufferings in getting here and making themselves homes, quite a few settlers along where Blair is now situated were visited by a fire this spring of 1806.

On the 6th of May fire was set to a Job [a tract of land with timber slashed down ready to be burned so that the land could be farmed later] of 10 or 15 acres, soon after which a great wind arose, and swept through the new clearings and destroyed fences, houses and barns.

Abraham Stauffer had his barn burnt.
Abraham Bechtel had his house and barn burnt.
Jacob Bechtel's house was saved but his barn and everything else were consumed.
Nathaniel Dodge who was the last of the settlers along the river, had two barns with all their contents burnt.

The fire went on making the most fearful destruction of all kinds of valuable timber. Thus those settlers who were probably the most advanced with their new homes were suddenly left without house, food or clothing, and were obliged to go below Dundas through mud, water, swamp and forest for provisions and other necessaries, which were not obtainable from their neighbors.

About 20 Mennonite men were conscripted to haul supplies for an 1813 engagement

...No one was exempt from non-combatant duties, although some resisted at times. Some were fined heavily in court. Cornelius Pannebecker removed the wheels from his wagon to save it, although his horse and son were still conscripted. Elizabeth (Gabel) Bechtel was threatened at sword-point by an officer who knew she was hiding oxen, which he sought for a massive-scale transport operation to the Detroit River.
