Independent right to the core Vendor's demonstrations are part of market legend

    By Beth Gallagher Record staff

Albert Pfeffer shambles back to a sticky table of apple peels and spilt coffee, hooks his cane around his knee, and slowly lights a cigarette.

At first glance you might think the dear 91-year-old man doesn't see the large no- smoking sign above his head.

    Guess again.

He sees it just fine. Thank you very much.

In the ordered chaos of a Saturday morning at the Kitchener Farmers Market, Pfeffer is a bit of defiance in the tidy world of shiny fruits and vegetables.

He and his cluttered table draw puzzled looks from the new world, baby-toting types in search of salt-free sausage. From veteran shoppers, he gets a nod and a few waves.

For almost 30 years, Pfeffer has made his way to the market with a gym bag full of invention-state-of-the-art apple corers and vegetable peelers that he designed himself.

Although Pfeffer still enjoys his weekly trek to the market, word has it he may be retiring within the year. Until then, however, on most Saturday mornings he can be seen taking off his brown peaked cap, putting a shiny red oilcloth down on his table and dumping dozens of the peelers and corers that he sells for $2.50.

He spends the rest of the morning rearranging the corers, sipping on hot coffee and happily smoking in a no- smoking area

Like most people who have walked this earth for almost a century, Pfeffer has his good days and his bad days. On the good days he can wax philosophic about the glory of the apple corer. His demonstrations of the widely known kitchen tools are legendary.

You can almost hear his body creaking as he slowly rises to show a young family that doesn't speak English how to use the device. With one arm resting on his thin cane, Pfeffer says:

"Hold your apple this way. Put it in on the angle, then straighten it up and go... "If you have baked apples, don't go so far."

Then the loud banging starts because, after all, the apple corer can be used as a meat tenderizer. "It's also a nice, handy little chopper," he says, hammering away at an unsuspecting carrot.

And then he delivers one of his trademark giggles. It's a raspy, short winded chuckle, marinated by cigarettes and age. On his bad days, he can be seen wandering from his table, falling asleep or trying to "flirt" with the young ladies.

He is alternatively described as a "real ladies man," flesty, stubborn, merry, and "part of the market family."

According to market management, his chain smoking caused problems for some of the vendors upstairs where he used to sell his wares. He was moved around for a while and finally given a spot downstairs near the escalator.

"They keep pushing me all over," he says. On some Saturday mornings, Pfeffer can be found upstairs demanding to know where his table has gone.

When he eventually does retire, you get the feeling the market, with all its regally hung sausage and finely displayed pastries, will run a little more smoothly.

There won't be any nasty second-hand smoke, gooey brown apple cores, or lively language from the likes of Albert Pfeffer.

    Pity
