    STANLEY SHANTZ 1920 - 2009 Went to be with his Lord on Friday, January 2, 2009 at Cambridge Memorial Hospital, in his 89th year. Loving husband of Eral (nee Cressman). Devoted father of Jeanne Leis, Lois Broda (Tom), Ross Shantz (Jean) and Larry Shantz (Cindy). Step-father to Paul Brubacher (Marilyn), Elizabeth Setzkorn (Claude) and Margaret Griffin (Dan). Stanley had nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, Jennifer Shahi (Arsalan) and their children Dustin and Cameron, Jody Broda (Dana Fewkes), Tim Broda (Amy) and their children Kaylynn and Natalie, Brent Shantz and his son Darien, Laura Shantz, Kristie Fontaine (Herb), Jason Shantz (Kayla) and their children Alexis and Zoey, Amber Shantz and Carlie Shantz; as well as nine step-grandchildren, Jonathan, Danielle, Charlotte (Travis), Rebecca, Matthew, Andrew, Sonya, Loni and Bronwyn. Stanley was Canadian grandpa to Rahim and Narges Atabakhsh and their daughter Maral, and Nader and Pegah Fathi and their children Kiara and Kasra. Survived by his sister, Ilene Burkhardt; sisters-in-law, Alice Wideman, Mabel Stott (George), Margaret Dettweiler (Harold), Florence Karcher (Don) and Florence Krieder (Roy). Predeceased by his first wife, Doris (nee Hachborn) in 1991; his son-in-law, Ralph Leis in 1998; his parents, David Shantz and Salome (nee Schmitt); brothers, Lorne Shantz (Ada) and Walter Shantz (Lydia); brother-in-law, Gordon Burkhardt and two step-children, James and Charlotte in infancy. Visitation was held at Fairview Mennonite Home, 515 Langs Dr., Cambridge on Sunday, January 4 from 2-4 p.m. Visitation will continue at the Erb & Good Family Funeral Home , 171 King St. S., Waterloo on Monday, January 5 (today) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The funeral service will take place at St. Jacobs Mennonite Church, 1310 King St., St. Jacobs on Tuesday, January 6, 2009, at 11 a.m., the Revs. Mark Diller Harder and Claire Osinkosky officiating. Reception will follow the service in the Church Hall. Interment in Shantz Mennonite Cemetery. Donations in Stanley's memory may be made to Mennonite Central Committee or Fairview Mennonite Home and can be arranged through the funeral home, www.erbgood.com or 519-745-8445. In living memory of Stanley, a donation will be made to the Trees for Learning Program by the funeral home.

    SHANTZ, Mrs. Doris Jean

    At St. Mary's Hospital, Kitchener, on Sunday, March 24, 1991, in her 72nd year, the former Doris Hachborn, of RR 2, Baden. Doris was a member of the Wellesley Alliance Church, where she served as past president of the Alliance Women's Group and was a Sunday school teacher. She had also been a Red Cross Homemaker for 10 years. Beloved wife of Stanley Shantz whom she married September 9, 1944. Dearly loved mother of Jeanne and her husband Ralph Leis of Kitchener, Lois and her husband Tom Broda of Milverton, Ross and his wife Jean of New Hamburg and Larry and his wife Cindy of RR 2, Baden. She is lovingly remembered by her grandchildren, Jennifer and her husband Arsalan Shahi, Jody and Tim Broda, Brent and Laura Jean Shantz and Kristie, Jason and Amber Shantz. Doris is also fondly remembered by her sisters, Alice and her husband Rev. Bruce Wideman of Hanover, Mabel and her husband George Stott of Stratford, Margaret and her husband Harold Dettweiler of Kitchener and Florence and her husband Don Karcher of Breslau. A sister, Mrs. Ruth (Pearson) Eby predeceased her. Dear sis-ter-in-law of Pearson Eby and his wife Jewel of Elmira, Lorne Shantz and his wife Ada of Baden, Ilene Burkhardt of Kitchener and Lydia Shantz of Baden. She was predeceased by her parents, John Arthur Hachborn and Ina Snider and brothers-in-law, Rev. Harold Hallman (Mabel), Gordon Burkhardt and Walter Shantz. Friends and relatives may call at the Mark Jutzi Funeral Homo, 291 Huron St., New Hamburg, after 7 p.m. this evening (Monday), until noon Wednesday, March 27, when transfer will be made to Wellesley Alliance Church, RR 1, Wellesley for the service at 2: 30 p.m, Pastor Edmund J. Schmidt, last surviving member of the Jacob B. Schmidt family, member of the Shantz Mennonite Church and WMSA of the church, survived by her husband David; two sons, Lorne and Stanley, both of Route 2, Baden; one daughter, Mrs. Gordon (Eileen) Burkhardt of Kitchener; also 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; predeceased by son Walter in 1946; also by three brothers and three sisters.
    Will rest at the Bruce J. Omand Funeral Home, 291 Huron St., New Hamburg, until noon on Saturday, when removal will be made to the Shantz Mennonite Church, Wilmot Township, for services at 3 p.m.
    Memorial contributions may be made to the Ontario Mennonite Mission Board.

    Arthur Hachborn, 73, RR 1, Breslau, died Feb. 12 in K-W Hospital following a brief illness. He was a former member of Waterloo Township council. A native of Conestogo, he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Hachborn and a member of Breslau United Missionary Church. He farmed near Bloomingdale for several years.

    Surviving are his widow, the former Ina Snider whom he married in 1916; six daughters, Mrs. Pearson (Ruth) Eby, Mrs. Donald (Florence) Karcher and Mrs. Harold (Margaret) Detweiler all of Breslau; Mrs. Harold (Mabel) Hallman of Nigeria, West Africa, Mrs. Stanley (Doris) Shantz of Baden and Mrs. Bruce (Alice) Wideman of Kitchener; three brothers Harry of Conestogo, William of St. Jacobs and carl of Kitchener; two sisters, Mrs. Katherine Manecker of Hamilton and Mrs. Henrietta White of California, and 21 grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted in Breslau United Missionary Church Saturday at 2: 30 pm by Rev. H.G. Broadway minister of the church. Burial was in Bloomingdale Mennonite Cemetery.

    Shantz was born in Wilmot Springs, Ontario, May 4, 1843. He was married to Mary Ann Shantz Nov. 28, 1869. (She died Feb. 13, 1924.) This union was blessed with 10 children. He died after a short illness of pneumonia on Mar. 1, 1927; Aged 83 y. 9 m. 24 d. He leaves 6 children, 3 sons and 3 daughters, 20 grandchildren, 2 brothers, 2 sisters, and a host of relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted March 5, by Orphen Wismer and Manasseh Hallman. Text, II Cor. 5: 1, 8. Interment in the Shantz Cemetery.

    Mary Ann Shantz, beloved wife of Wendell Shantz, was born near Baden, Ont., July 31, 1846; died Feb. 13, 1924; aged 76 y. 6 m. 12 d. She was married to Wendell Shantz, Nov. 28, 1870. This union was blessed with ten children of whom 2 sons and 2 daughters preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband, 3 sons, 3 daughters, 17 grandchildren, 3 brothers, and 1 sister.Four years ago they observed their golden wedding anniversary with their family and relatives. In December, 1922, she was stricken with paralysis and was rendered almost helpless for 14 months until the message came, "Come home." Funeral services were conducted Feb. 16 by Orphen Wismer and Manasseh Hallman. Text, Psa. 27: 10. Interment in the Shantz cemetery.

    Schmitt. - Jacob B. Schmitt was born in Wilmot Twp., Ont., Nov. 28, 1845; he was married to Magdalena Snyder Oct. 20, 1867. This union was blessed with 9 children, three of whom died in infancy. His companion died July 25, 1885. On Oct. 31, 1886, he was married to Catharine Shantz. This union was blessed with three children, of whom only one survives. On Oct. 16, 1924, his second wife was also laid to rest, whose loss he felt keenly. He died Dec. 20, 1925, after a brief illness of heart trouble and dropsy; aged 80 y. 22 d. He leaves 7 children, 35 grandchildren, and 9 great-grandchildren, and one sister. The family has lost a loving father, the Church a faithful pillar, the community a kind neighbor, one who was ever ready to be of service to others. Bro. Schmitt was born on the farm, where he lived all his years, and reached the ripe old age of four score years. On Nov. 28 it was his desire that his family and a few others help celebrate his 80th, and as it proved, his last birthday. "This shall be my last birthday," he said, and he lived just 22 days longer. Funeral services were conducted Dec. 24th, by Orphen Wismer, Manassah Hallman, and C. F. Derstine. Text, Eccl. 12: 5.

    Snyder. William Snyder died at his home near Bloomingdale, Ont., on Sunday evening, Nov. 21, 1937, aged 88 y. 2 m. 30 d. He was a son of the late Jacob S. and Magdalena Snyder, and was born on the Snyder homestead in Waterloo Co., Ont., Aug. 22, 1849. He farmed in the neighborhood of his birthplace all his life until old age prevented him from going to the fields. He was united in marriage to Susannah Snyder. This union was blessed with 5 sons and 2 daughters. He leaves his wife, 3 sons, and 2 daughters (Clayton at home, Ivan of Breslau, Ferman of Kitchener, Mrs. Arthur Hockborn and Mrs. Ivan Cressman of Bloomingdale). He is also survived by 2 brothers, 2 sisters, 22 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. About 12 years ago he united with the Mennonite Church and remained faithful until he was called yonder. Funeral services were conducted by the brethren, C. F. Derstine and H. W. Stevanus.

    Snider.- Mrs. Susannah Snider was born Aug. 13, 1852, near Bloomingdale, Ont.; died March 16, 1939; aged 86 y. 7 m. 2 d. On June 18, 1884, she was united in marriage to Wm. Snider who predeceased her in November, 1937. This union was blessed with 5 sons and 2 daughters. Two sons predeceased the parents and the following remain to mourn her departure: Ivan, Ferman, Clayton, Ina (Mrs. A. Hackborn), and Alda (Mrs. Ivan Cressman). Also 22 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren survive. In early life she was converted and united with the U. B. Church. Later in life she transferred her membership to the Mennonite Church where she enjoyed fellowship until the Lord saw fit to translate her into that eternal fellowship yonder where all the redeemed have gone. Funeral services were in charge of Bro. H. W. Stevanus, assisted by Bro. C. F. Derstine

    Mrs. Susannah Snider

    Bloomingdale - The death occurred here, early Thursday morning, of Mrs. Susannah Snider, widow of the late William Snider, in her 87th year. Born in Waterloo township, she had resided there all her life. She was the last surviving member of the late Jonas Snider family. She is survived by three sons, Clayton, at home, Ivan of Breslau, and German, of Kitchener; two daughters, Mrs. Arthur Hackborn, Bloomingdale, and Mrs. Ivan Cressman, of Bloomingdale; twenty-two grandchildren and four great grandchildren also survive. One son predeceased her 20 years ago, while her husband died in November of 1937. Remains will be resting at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home until Friday. Funeral arrangements are not yet complete. Burial, however, will be made in the Snyder Mennonite Cemetery, at Bloomingdale.
