Laid at Rest.

The funeral of the late Levi Hageywas held on Thursday afternoon from his late residence, Kress Hill. Services were conducted at the house
and Interment took place at Preston, cemetery. The funeral was largelyattended.

The death occurred on Saturday evening of one of the town's most highly respected citizens in the person of Isabella Clemens, widow of Levi Hagey. Deceased was born in Waterloo township and has been a resident of Preston and vicinity all of her life.she was well known throughout the vicinity and loved by all.She was of a kind disposition, an affectionate mother, a good neighbor, and a friend of every one. She was a member of the Methodist Church and in her younger years took an active interest in church work. She leaves to mourn her loss the following children: Mrs. James Woolner, Kitchener, and Mrs William Graham of Preston. The Funeral will be held tomorrow,Tuesday, afternoon at 3o'clock from her late residence, Kress Hill, services at the house.

Mrs. Isabella Hagey Dead

The death took place on Saturday of Mrs. Isabella Hagey, a well known and highly respected citizen of Preston. She has been alling for some time, never-the-less the news of her death will be a great shock to her many friends and relatives in this district. She was of a very kindly nature and made friends with all in whom she came in contact with. She was a faithful and consistent member of the Methodist Church. Her husband the late Levi Hagey predeceased her some time ago. Mr. Ed. Clemens, Medicine Hat, is a brother. Two daughter survive, Jas. H. Woolner, Kitchener and Mrs. William Graham of thistown. The sympathy of all is extended to the bereaved family. The funeral will take place on Tuesday afternoon at Hagey's cemetery. Services will be held at the residence of Mrs. Joel Clemens, mother of the deceased, at 3 o'clock in the afternoon.

Jacob Hagey, "the eldest son of Daniel and Elizabeth (Bergey) Hagey, was born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, January 13th, 1808. In 1822, he, in company with his parents and others, came to Canada and settled at Preston, Ontario. He was married to Leah, daughter of Christian and Sophia (Ruth) Schwartz. She was born November 15th, 1811, and died May 28th, 1882. They resided at Preston, on the farm now possessed by their youngest son, Levi. He died April 9th, 1893. When a young man he was ordained deacon of the Mennonite Church for the Hagey field of labor. He was a man that was held in high esteem in the community for his many excellent social and religious qualities. It is doubtful whether he had a single enemy. His family consisted of eight children".

HAGEY - On the 19th of April, 1893, near Preston, Waterloo Twp., Waterloo Co., Ont., of infirmities of old age, Deacon Jacob Hagey. Buried on the 22d at Hagey's meeting-house where relatives and friends met to pay the last tribute of respect. His age was 85 years, 2 months and 26 days. Funeral services by J.B.. Gingrich at the house and Moses Bowman at the meeting-house, from 2 Cor. 4: 17, 18 and 5: 1. Bro. Hagey was ordained to the office of deacon on the 2d of December, 1832

Daniel Hagey, "the second son of Jacob and Susannah (Schwartz) Hagey, was born July 12th, 1784, and died November 14th, 1859. He was married, in 1806, to Elizabeth Bergey (Bergey then spelled Birgi), who was born February 26th, 1784. They resided in Franconia Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, until 1822 when they, with their four children, moved to Canada. With them came Henry Clemmer, father to John Clemmer, Joseph Bergey, and Abraham Becker. It took them 21 days to make the journey, arriving at Preston about the 20th of October. They settled on a farm, a little north of Preston, where they both died. She died September 16th, 1854. Their family consisted of six children"

One who will soon be classed among the old settlers of Preston is Christopher Kress, who by his energy and pluck has accumulated considerable property and who has greatly aided in giving Preston a good name as a desirable place of resort for the cure of rheumatism and kindred diseases, through its mineral baths.

The mineral springs were struck by one Peter Erb while boring for salt in 1838, which he never obtained. He placed no value in the sulphur water he had so struck. After abandoning boring, the water of the spring was employed for driving an overshot wheel of a wagon making shop, occupied by one Daniel Hagey, until Mr. Samuel Cornell obtained from Mr. Joseph Erb sufficient land near the spring to erect an hotel. Mr. Cornell with great energy built suitable premises and a bath house with boiler to enable him to furnish hot and cold baths.. His undertaking proved successful but death terminated his career. The property was sold and Christopher Kress became its owner. He greatly enlarged, improved and ornamented it and the invalids who have sought and obtained relief at the Preston mineral baths count by the hundreds.

Abraham Clemens L., "the eldest son of Jacob and Elizabeth (Lederach) Clemens, was born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, July 3rd, 1781, and when four years of age his parents moved to Chester County where he was raised. In 1807 he was married to Magdalena, daughter of John and Hester (Steiner ) Miller. She was born February 8th, 1786, and died February 1st, 1847. In 1809 they moved to Canada and settled in Waterloo County, Ontario, a little north of Preston on the farm owned until recently by their son Joel Here they both died. His death took place January 26th, 1845. In 1815 he was ordained deacon of the Mennonite Church for the Hagey field of labor. This position he held until his death. To him and his wife were born ten children, "

Mennonite families suffered misfortunes, such as childbirth deaths of women, accidental work deaths of men, frequent deaths of infants and young children, and the scourges of cholera, typhoid and tuberculosis. Cholera epidemics of the 1830s especially in July-August 1834 - could be devastating. Funerals were usually arranged by neighbours and friends, but the community was so demoralized in 1834 that, as Deacon Abraham L. Clemens wrote to his brother in Chester County in 1836, "the neighbours did not go out to assist one another as in any other disease so that there was no funeral held."

Clemens who was born in the same place, July 3rd, 1781. In 1809 they moved to Canada and settled a little north of Preston where they both died. Jacob S. Shoemaker, "the eldest of John Shoemaker's children, was born April 24th, 1798. He, after quitting school, entered his father's mill where he was engaged until 1820 when he became desirous to seek his fortune in the then much-spoken-of Canada. He came to Abraham Erb, Waterloo, some time during the spring of 1820. He, being a practical miller, and just the man required to manage the grist mill of this place, remained in Abraham Erb's service as miller for nearly two years when he and William Hunsberger returned to Pennsylvania to visit their parents and friends. After making a sojourn of a few months they returned the same spring. Mr. Shoemaker again assumed the management of the Waterloo Mills. On July 2nd, 1822, he was married to Elizabeth Schneider (See Schneider record for her family history) who was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, January 2nd, 1802, and died in Preston, November 26th, 1876. Some time after their marriage he and his wife went home to Pennsylvania on a visit. During this visit he ordered the large clock, now in possession of his daughter, Elizabeth. His father brought it with him when he paid a visit to Canada in 1826. Some time during the year 1827 or 1828 he purchased lot No. 59, German Company's Tract and afterwards became the founder of Bridgeport. In 1829 he constructed the large dam and erected the sawmills still standing. In 1830 he erected the large roller mills now in possession of Messrs Shirk and Snider. He resided in the town of Waterloo until 1830 when he moved to Bridgeport. Here he soon became proprietor, besides the extensive mills and sawmills, of a store, woollen mills and distillery. In 1840 he built the large house now possessed by Mrs. Veronica Horst. During the great financial depression all over the province in 1851, besides other difficulties never fully investigated, he is said to have failed. He then moved to Preston to his son-in-law, Joel Clemens, from there to Blenheim Township, Oxford County, where he erected a sawmill and did a successful business. His last days were spent with his daughter, Barbara (Mrs. H. Huber of Berlin), where he died March 20th, 1875. Both he and his wife are buried in the Mennonite burial ground at the east end of Berlin. They had a family of eleven children"

As we know the Family Compact's misrule stirred up the Rebellion in 1837, and that William Lyon Mackenzie was the leader. After the clash of arms at Montgomery's tavern. near Toronto, he fled to Buffalo, N.Y., via Bridgeport. The late Allen Huber asserted.
A large reward was offered for his capture, alive or dead. and Dr. Scott of Berlin and J. U. Tyson of Bridgeport watched to seize Mackenzie. My grandfather, Jacob S. Shoemaker, a miller and Reformer at Bridgeport, And out scouts to warn Mackenzie. He was taken across the Grand River and guided to the Bush Inn near Doon. From there he reached Buffalo in safety. Historic Building:
Built in 1840 by Jacob S. Shoemaker across from the mill he constructed in 1830. In 1969 the house with stone foundation and handmade brick walls was listed in fair to poor condition. The roof was framed with mortise and tenon joining. The house was a combination of Georgian proportions and classical decorations. The large dormers were reminiscent of early buildings in Pennsylvania. In 1850 the house was sold to Elias Eby together with the mill complex. The house was been renovated a number of times. The porch was removed and the house converted into a tri-plex by 1969.<sup>1a
