    ______________________

In those days the water of the Grand River was kept at work more than it is to-day in proportion to the town's needs now. Its waters run on, still willing to drive thousands of spindles or wheels. The requirements of the town for a water service have been made complete by a water works system, supplying an abundance for every purpose and of the purest and best spring water. The water supply being plentiful, the streets well supplied with hydrants, a fire has very little chance of gaining much headway. The town has a well-equipped fire brigade. The department is headed by Mr. James Curliss as Chief, who, night or day, on the first tap of the bell, is on hand, guiding his brigade behind his charger helmeted in regulation fire-fighting style.

    Notes:

Once can scarcely conceive of the modern travelling facilities, disappointing as they may, in this rapid age, sometimes, be, without thinking of the days of the stage coach. To-day the fine railroad coaches, proof against wind and weather and conducted by obliging officials, carry passengers and mail twice daily towards the Grand Truck and C.P.R. [Canadian Pacific Railway] main roads, while formerly - only a dozen years ago - the only regular means of reaching a railway was by stage coach travelling daily a distance of ten miles and return. Waterloo was then the nearest point of connection with the G.T.R. Rain or shine, cold or warm, the Elmira stage, after having previously gathered the mail and conveyed passengers to and from Floradale, Yatton and Glenallan, left Elmira each morning and returned each night. For many years, few days, indeed, passed, on which the familiar figure of Mr. Henry Steuernagel, the veteran stage-driver, might not be seen on the front seat, on very busy days on the dash-board, of the old stage coach. His duties were exacting and the orders he carried in his memory were many. Mr. Steuernagel is one of the oldest residents of Elmira, residing here since 1855.
