John Master, "the eldest son of Isaac and Mary (Clemens) Master, was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania, March 7th, 1810. He came to Canada with his parents when nine years of age. On October 30th, 1830, he was married to Nancy Stauffer who was born August 4th, 1811, and died May 13th, 1843. After her decease he was married to Catharine Reichert, April 30th, 1844. She was born in this county, May 15th, 1811. After his marriage he resided on a farm near that of his father's where he remained several years. Being persuaded by some parties to quit the life of an husbandman and begin that of an inn-keeper, he left the farm now in possession of James Cowan and moved to Dundas where he took possession of the old hotel known as 'Peter Bomberger's', a great resort for travellers from all parts of the northern and western counties. But being brought up to the business of agriculture he soon became so disgusted with the life of 'innkeeping' that after the short stay of six months he disposed of his business in Dundas and returned to Waterloo, the county of his adoption. After his return he settled in Wilmot Township, several miles west of New Dundee, on the farm now in possession of John Master, his grandson. From here he moved to Plattsville, Oxford County, where he resided until 1891, thence to Berlin where he and his aged partner are spending the evening of their lives with their son Isaac, ex-M. P. P. Here they have a pleasant home and the loving care of all. To him and his first wife was born a family of six children"

In 1834 a new set of township officers was created. These were the "fence viewers" whose job it was to settle disputes between neighbours as to the value of fencing provided by a neighbour, i.e. If livestock broke a fence down and caused damage to another's fields the fence viewer would decide if the fence had been up to standard and to what extent the damage was and how much money was owing in compensation. (Prior to 1834 this had been the job of the "Overseers of Highways", who checked roads, fences, ditch draining etc. and decided what maintenance work was needed and who was to help. The Overseer had complete control over who in his division was to help and called upon persons had to go and bring whatever tools were requested by the Overseer.) Fence viewers also had to settle disputes over drainage.

In January 1837 Isaac and Jacob Shantz Jr. were appointed Fence viewers for the Lower Part of Waterloo, east of the Grand River, Daniel Stauffer was for Lower Part of Waterloo west of the Grand River, Philip Bleam was for Preston and Adam Winters was appointed for the village of Waterloo.

By 1861 most of the family had moved from the district and none show up in the 1861 assessment.

WARNING: In my view (Jim McKane), the preponderance of the evidence suggests that at least the first 5 of Abraham's children were born to Rebecca Miller and the last one, two, or three of his children to Mary Custer. Hannah and Elizabeth could have been the last children of Rebecca (and I have listed them this way) or the first two children of Mary. Apparently all the children were born in Chester Co., PA before Abraham and his second wife moved to Canada. But I have no primary sources to confirm the dates of the two marriages or which wife was the mother of each child.

She was married to Abraham Clemens who was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania, in 1764, and died near Hespeler, in 1819. In 1809 they moved to Canada and settled in Waterloo County, Ontario, near Hespeler where she died in 1819, being the same year in which her husband died." [this is apparently in error, the tombstone and family bible indicate it was Mary who died in 1819 and was born in 1763]

    Notes:

Michael Groh, "the third son of old Hannes and Magdalena (Baumann) Groh, was born in 1757. In 1779 he was married to Elizabeth Witmer. In 1804 he, in company with others, came to Canada with the object of making a thorough inspection of the nature of the country. So well was Mr. Groh pleased with the appearance of the country (then all in its primeval state) that he took up a claim between Preston and Hespeler. He cleared about six acres and made it ready for fall wheat. On this clearing he erected a small log cabin into which he purposed moving on his return, with family, from Pennsylvania. In August of the same year he returned to his parental home in Montgomery County. During the first week of September (1804) he, (bidding adieu to his parents, brothers, friends and relatives, and not thinking of this being their last time of meeting here on earth) in company with his wife and family, set out on the journey for their Canadian home. They came as far as Buffalo where they crossed the Niagara River and proceeded on their journey to Mr. Boyer's who resided near the river on the Canadian side, where Mr. Groh, the father of the family, took sick and, after a few weeks suffering, died. The wife and two sons, John and Jacob, and one or two daughters, proceeded on their journey to Waterloo while the eldest daughter, Barbara, remained with her father to nurse him during his illness, and after his recovery they were to follow the family, but the mother and family had no sooner arrived at their new home when word came that the father was dead. He died about September 20th, 1804. Their family consisted of seven children"
