Well Known Drover Passes Away Suddenly in Galt on Saturday, Galt, July 5.

John Scott is dead, the bluff, genial, big-hearted, honest-souled drover whom everybody knew, admired and respected. There is not another citizen in Galt whose sudden taking off would have occasioned more surprise and profound regret. He has been a conspicuous figure in the history of Galt, for over half a century. A man who exemplified all those sterling characteristics of the sturdy race, from which he sprang, his name will always be prominently and honorably associated with the growth and progress of the town of which he was an ostentatious but public spirited and most exemplary citizen. Any office in the gift of his fellow citizens could have been, John Scott's, but he held himself apart from public life, but always in his quiet but practical way contributed to those enterprises, private as well as public, which have made for the growth of the town. The opera house block, the telephone block and other of Galt's conspicuous buildings are conspicuous to Mr. Scott's progressive public spirited and the pluck he manifested in promoting the best interests of the community. He was best known, however, to the outside world, as a representative horseman and cattle dealer. His name as a breeder and buyer was very familiar throughout this western section and wherever it was known it was a synonym for honesty and probity. Mr. Scott 's death occurred suddenly last night. He was taken with a fainting spell while in one of the stores and in a half an hour after being removed to his residence, passed away. Up to the time of his seizure he was in his usual robust health. Despite his 77 years, Mr. Scott was well preserved, active and able to attend to business. A native of Hawich, Scotland, he came to Galt, when a boy of nine and has resided here continuously ever since. He was an ardent Conservative and for years has been honorary president of the South Waterloo Liberal-Conservative Association, which appreciated his in valuable party services and delighted to do him honor. A family of eight survive. The funeral is set for Tuesday, at 2.

    Notes:

Mr. JAS. SCRIMGER, One of the Oldest Pioneers of Dumfries, Passes Away, Aged 92 Years.

Another old resident of Dumfries, has passed away in the person of Mr. Jas. Scrimger, whose death occurred on Sunday morning at a few minutes past 12 o'clock, at his residence near the Toll Galt, on the Stone Road. The deceased in addition to being one of the oldest, if not the oldest person in the county, was one of its first settlers, he having first taken up his residence here nearly seventy years ago. The few who knew Dumfries in that distant time, have been, almost without an exception, called long since to join the great majority and the death of the late Mr. Scrimger severs one of the last links that connect the past, with the present. The deceased, who was one of a family of twelve, was born in Invernessshire, Scotland, in the year 1803. When he was about four years of age, the family left the old land and emigrated to the United States, settling in Johnston, N. Y. Some seven years later they removed, this time going to Caledonia, in the same state. This continued to be the home of the deceased, until he reached manhood, when, in the year, 1825, he, accompanied by the other members of the family, came to Canada, finally taking up land in and around where Galt now stands. Shortly after leaving the States, he was married to Miss Jane Keachie, of Dumfries, who predeceased her husband some twelve years. The farm on which the deceased originally settled, is now known as the McMillan Farm. After residing on the place for a number of years, he sold the farm and shortly afterwards, became keeper of the Toll Gate, which position he filled for a number of years. He then removed to his farm, adjoining the Toll Gate and here the remainder of his life was passed. Eight children were born to deceased, but of the one son and three daughters, who grew to manhood and womanhood, only the son, William, survives him. His brother and sister, who are still living, are William, of Cobourg, Ont. and Mrs. A. G.Y. McPherson, who, resides with her son, Mr. Malcolm McPherson, East River Road. In politics, the late Mr. Scrimger was a staunch Reformer and although never taking an active part in political matters, he always evinced interest in the welfare or his party. In religion, he was a Presbyterian. Although having past through many years; of trial, hardship and trouble, the deceased was, as far as health was concerned, a well man up to a few days before his death. Two weeks prior to his demise, Scrimger walked to town and the many friends who saw him on that occasion hoped, from his hale appearance, that he would be spared for some time to come, notwithstanding his great age. As a man, the deceased was respected by all and his death, although occurring long after the allotted span of three score years and ten was past, will be learned with regret by many. The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon, at 2 o'clock, from his late residence, near the toll gate, to Mt. View cemetery.

    Notes:

DEATH OF A VERY OLD RESIDENT - On Sunday last there passed away a very old and respected resident of this section, Mrs. James Scrimger. The deceased lady was taken ill about a week before her death. Mrs. Scrimger was the daughter of the late Mr. Thomas Keachie, and was a native of Florida, Montgomery County, York state. She came to this country when very young and was married in 1829, we believe, residing with her husband almost continuously on the homestead near the Toll-gate during the whole of their long married life of 53 years. The deceased lady and her family occupied prominent positions in the history of this section and in all its vicissitudes, enjoyed the thorough confidence and respect of all who knew them. Her aged partner, now in his 82nd year is yet hale and hearty and has the warmest sympathy of our people in his loss. Mrs. Scrimger was an eminently christian woman, and her end was most peaceful and resigned. We regret to hear that her brother, Mr. Bailey Keachie is at present quite ill and at his advanced age, this causes his friends anxiety.

    Notes:

With feelings of great regret we announce to our readers this week the death of Mr. David Scott, which took place at the residence of Mr. David Harris, Preston, on Saturday last. The deceased was long a resident of this locality, having emigrated, with his family to Galt in the year 1839. Shortly after arriving here he went into the employ of the late A. Shade, having charge of the farm now owned by the Messrs. Brydon, Blair Road. He continued in Mr. Shade's employ for many years having for some time charge of the farm now owned by Mr. Wm. Smith. After Mr. Shade's death Mr. Scott took the farm owned by the Gouinlock Estate where he resided until a few years ago. Up to the time of his death, even though aged nearly 92 years, the deceased retained all his faculties and was able to read a newspaper easily without the aid of glasses. Mr. Scott was the father of Mr. John Scott, of Galt, Mr. Gideon Scott, Mrs. Sibbald, of Owen Sound, Mrs. Wm. Hood, of Guelph and Mr. Walter Scott, of Galt. He was a temperate, hard-working man and to his connect life can no doubt be traced the extreme age to which he lived.
