    Notes:

    Death of Thomas Erly

A gloom was cast over the entire community on Sunday morning last when it became known that Thomas Erly, for many years an esteemed citizen of Waterloo, had passed the bounds of this life to join the majority. The immediate cause of his death was pneumonia. His death was entirely unexpected as but few of our townspeople were aware of his serious illness. On Tuesday last Mr. Erly was to be found at his place of duty at the woollen mills despite the fact that he was feeling unwell. On Wednesday he was instructed by his physician to keep his bed. Owing to an enfeebled constitution brought on by an attack of la grippe some time before, he rapidly grew worse until Sunday morning when death ended his sufferings.

Mr. Erly was born in Yorkshire, England, May 10th 1844, and emigrated to Canada with his wife in 1869 and settled in Waterloo. After a stay here of one and a half years they removed to Ottawa, returning to Waterloo again after an absence of five years to make their home permanently here.

Mr. Erly was a spinner by trade but since coming to Waterloo he filled the position of woolsorter to the Waterloo Woollen Company. He was faithful and diligent in the performance of his duties and was highly esteemed by his fellow employees as was evidenced by their attendance in a body at the funeral, and by the beautiful floral tribute offered consisting of a pillow of carnations and lilies.

The funeral took place on Tuesday and was very largely attended. After a short service in the Methodist church conducted by the Rev. J.A. McLachlan, the remains were interred in the Mount Hope Cemetery.

A widow and two sons are left to mourn the loss of a kind husband and father. Five children predeceased him. The bereaved family will have the sympathy of the entire community in the great and sudden affliction they have been called upon to endure.
