OLINSKI, Jerome Joseph - 1923 - 2008. At Trinity Village Care Centre, Thursday, May 1, 2008, one month prior to his 85th birthday. Ever loving and dedicated husband to Patricia, through their 62 years of marriage. Beloved father of Paul and his wife Carol, Peter, who predeceased him February 4, 2008, and his wife Heather, Patrick and his wife Cathy, Mary-Kay Chomitz and her husband John, and Michael and his wife Elenoare. Proud grandpa to Jon and Lisa, Tyler and Gaelen, Robin, Andrew and his wife Pam, and Meaghan, and Craig and Christina. Special "old grandpa" to Elliot and Harrison. Loving brother of Frances Karges of Waterloo, Jim Olinski and his wife Doreen of Bowmanville, John Olinski and his wife Jean of Kitchener, and Agnes Tettamble of St. Louis, Missouri. A wonderful uncle to many nieces, nephews and cousins. Predeceased by his mother, Ann Foran and father, Philip Olinski. Also predeceased by twin infant sons, James and John, and a sister, Pauline Neu. His interest in hockey began as a rink rat, playing locally for the Waterloo Siskens Jr. B. team, then the Guelph Biltmores Jr. A's and the Stratford Kroehlers. In 1943, he played in the American Hockey league for the Indianapolis Capitals. During his 18 months in the Navy, he was a member of the football team which won the Canadian Navy championships. In 1945, he married his childhood sweetheart, Patricia, and joined the Cornwall Flyers of the Quebec Sr. League. In 1947, Jerry became an original member of the K-W Flying Dutchman Hockey Club. He joined the Kitchener Police Force, in the traffic division, which ended his career as a player, but opened the door for him to become a referee. He refereed for the O.H.A. league, and in 1953 the N.H.L. offered him a contract. In 1958 he returned to the O.H.A. and also spent two years in the Western Hockey League. In 1969, he hung up his referee's uniform, and in 1980, was inducted into the O.H.A. referees Hall Of Fame. With a growing family, Jerry decided to become a successful insurance agent. He became the owner and President of Hessenaur and Shantz Insurance and Real Estate, and was respected locally as well as throughout Ontario. Jerry served the cause of Catholic education as a Trustee for the Waterloo County Separate School Board for over 34 years. He was proud to be a fourth Degree, lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus. Jerry was also a lifetime member of the Twin Cities Kiwanis Club, the K-W Naval Association and the Serra Club. He was also the second longest serving member of the Royal Canadian Legion (Branch 50), and was the Master of Ceremonies at the cenotaph on Remembrance Day for many years. Always with a smile and a kind word, he demonstrated his supreme faith in all he did. When asked near the end how things were going, he said jokingly with a mischievous grin: "Fifty-fifty." We invite Jerry's friends to visit with us at Henry Walser Funeral Home , 507 Frederick St., Kitchener, 519-749-8467, on Monday, May 5, 2008 (today) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Parish prayers 8: 45 p.m. Monday evening. Funeral mass to be held at St. Anne's Parish, 268 East Avenue, Kitchener, Tuesday, May 6, 2008, 11 a.m. Father Mark Sullivan officiating and Father Bernie Hayes CR concelebrating. Interment at Woodland Cemetery. Reception to follow at Emmanuel Village (1250 Weber Street East, Kitchener). In his memory, donations to the Alzheimer Society of Kitchener-Waterloo, The Cherry Orchard House at Trinity Village Care Centre, or the charity of your choice would be most appreciated. The family would also like to thank the caring angels at Trinity Village for their excellent care, and for loving Jerry as much as we did. Visit www.henrywalser.com for Jerry's memorial.
