    PTE. WILFRED LEIS

    Reported missing last August while engaged in operations in , France, Pte. Wilfred Leis, 24, husband of Mrs. Vera Leis, 120 Glasgow St., and son of Mr. and Mrs. Milton Leis, 10 Eden Ave., has now been officially presumed killed.

    An official letter received by his wife revealed that he had been riding in a half-truck vehicle near Iffs, France, when it received direct hits from 88-millimetre shells. The, vehicle, the letter continued, caught fire and no one was seen to emerge from the wreck.

    A member of the Essex Scottish Regiment, Pte. Leis had enlisted in April, 1942, and, following training at No. 10 B.T.C. here and Camp Borden, he was posted overseas in September, 1943. A native of Wellesley, he was educated here and was employed at the Dominion Tire factory before entering the army. He attended Calvary Evangelical Church.

    Besides his wife and parents he is survived by a young daughter, Darlene Marie; three brothers, Milton, Wallace, and Robert, all residing with their parents at 10 Eden Ave.; and four sister, Mrs. Mildred Kaminski, 120 Glasgow St., Mrs. Catherine Musclow, 43 Allan St., Waterloo, Mrs. Marie Kerr, 680 King St. W., and Laura, at home.

    Died in Hospital After Near Drowning When Car Goes Into Shallow Water

    Milton Lies, 52, of Kitchener, died unexpectedly in K-W Hospital on Sunday evening after being saved from drowning earlier in the afternoon. He was driving into Kitchener from the south-west when his car struck the Mill St. bridge near the city limits and plummeted into the creek. Mr. Leis was pinned underneath in about 1 feet of water. Golfers from the Rockway golf course saw the accident and rushed to his assistance. They pulled him from his perilous position and he seemed to be only slightly injured. The deceased was a former resident of New Hamburg, and was employed in the Hahn Brass Co. factory. He was a son-in-law of Mrs. Catharine Litwiller of this town. Surviving are his wife, three sons, Milton, Wallace and Robert, all of Kitchener; four daughters, Mrs. Carl (Mildred) Kaminska of Centreville; Mrs. William (Katharine) Musclow of Galt; Mrs. Munro (Marie) Kerr and Mrs. Matthew (Laura) Riem, both of Kitchener; a sister, Mrs. Solomon Gerber, Wellesley, and nine grandchildren. A son, Wilfred, was killed in action in France in the Second World War. A sister, Nancy, and a brother, Mose, also predeceased him. A private funeral service was held Wednesday afternoon at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. H. A. Kellerman, pastor of Calvary Memorial Church, officiating. Burial was in Woodland Cemetery, Kitchener.

    Mrs. Milton Leis, 64, of 10 Eden Ave., died Sunday at K-W Hospital after a lengthy illness. She was born the former Leah Litwiller, July 22, 1902, at Wellesley, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Christian Litwiller. Mrs. Leis had lived in Kitchener for the past 33 years and had been employed at General Products Division of Uniroyal (1966) Ltd. for the past 23 years. She was a member of Calvary Evangelical United Brethern Church. Surviving are three sons, Milton, Wallace, and Robert, all of Kitchener; three daughters, Mrs. Carl (Mildred) Kaminska, Kitchener; Mrs. Douglas (Marie) Kerr, Anaheim, Calif. and Mrs. Matthew (Laura) Riem, Costa Mesa, Calif., one brother, John, Lancaster, N.Y.; 30 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, one son, and one daughter. The body is at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home where the funeral service will be conducted Wednesday at 2 p.m. by Rev. J. V. Dahms of Calvary EUB Church. Burial will be in Woodland cemetery. Donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Jean Kellerman Fund of Calvary EUB Church will be accepted as expressions of sympathy.

    WELLESLEY.-A native of Wellesley township, Menno Leis, 83, township Menno Leis died here Tuesday night at the home of his son-in-law, Solomon Gerber. He had been ill three weeks. He attended Maple View Mennonite Church, Third Line of Wellesley. His wife predeceased him some years ago.

    Surviving is one son, Milton, of Kitchener, one daughter, Mrs. Solomon Gerber, Wellesley, and a brother, Solomon, of Baden. He was predeceased by one son, three daughters, eight brothers and four sisters.

    Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon, with Rev. Samuel Schultz officiating.

    Death of Christian Litwiller

    Death came very suddenly to an esteemed resident of New Hamburg late on Monday evening, when Mr. Christian R. Litwiller passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Milton Leis, near Mannheim. Mr. Litwiller had been working at Wellesley during the day and went to his daughter's home for the night. He had his supper and retired about 10 o'clock apparently in his usual robust health but shortly thereafter was seized with a heart attack and passed away before medical aid could be summoned. The deceased was born near St. Agatha and spent his whole life in this community. For the past twelve years he was a resident of this town. He was aged 56 years, 9 months and 13 days. He leaves his wife, who before her marriage was Katharine Kropf of St. Agatha, besides his daughter, Mrs. Leis and four sons, Edward of New Hamburg, Ivan of Hamilton, and Rudy and John of Lancaster, N.Y. He is also survived by one brother, John Litwiller of Wilmot, and two sisters, Mrs. Aaron Wagler, of Baden, and Miss Catharine Litwiller, of St. Agatha. The funeral was held from his late home here yesterday forenoon with service in the Amish-Mennonite Church, near Baden, followed by interment in the A.-M. Cemetery. The funeral service was conducted by Bishop Daniel Steinman and was attended by a large circle of relatives and friends.

    Mrs. Catharine Litwiller, widow of the late Christian Litwiller, died at the home of her son, Rudy, Queen street, on Wednesday, at the age of 82 years. The deceased was born in Baden, a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joel Kropf, and had lived with her son here for the past four years. Her husband predeceased her in 1931. Mrs. Litwiller, who was a member of Steinman A. M. Church, is survived by two sons, Rudolph, of New Hamburg, and John, Lancaster, N.Y., and one daughter, Mrs. Milton (Leah) Leis of Kitchener; a brother, John, and a sister, Mattie, of Wellesley, and 24 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren. Three sons, four brothers, and three sisters predeceased her. The body will be at the Futher-Omand funeral home until Saturday noon when removal will be made to Steinman Church for memorial service at 3: 00 p.m. Internment will be in the church cemetery. In charge of the services will be Bishop Orland Gingerich.

    LEIS.-Joseph Leis of near Wellesley, Waterloo Co., Ont., was born in Bavaria on the 9th of February 1817 and died on the 6th of July 1896, aged 79 years, 4 months and 27 days. He came to this country in his youth. He was married to Catherine Kennel. They lived in matrimony 52 years, 3 months and 17 days. He leaves his sorrowing widow, nine sons and four daughters and forty-three grandchildren. He lived in the house which he erected in the primeval forests of "Upper Canada" fifty-two years ago and his was the first death that occurred in the house. He was a faithful member of the Old Amish branch of the church, and died of paralysis and the infirmities of old age. A large concourse of friends followed his remains to the Wellesley graveyard on the 9th. Funeral services by Christian Gascho, Christian Zehr and John Gascho.

    Death of Mrs. Leis

    The death of Mrs. Leis, widow of the late Joseph Leis, occurred at the home of her son-in-law, Mr. Chr. J. Lichty, just east of Crosshill, on Thursday last, aged 76 years and four months. Deceased was one of the very earliest of residents of this section, coming here with her father, Mr. Kennel, who settled on the eastern border of Wellesley when she was a mere child. Since that time she has always lived here, and throughout her long and useful life she retained the highest respect of all. Besides a large number of descendants and relatives, Mrs. Leis leaves a family of thirteen children: Noah, John, Magdelene (Mrs. P. Jantzi), Chris., Jos., David, Daniel, Catherine (Mrs. C. J. Lichty), Menno, Barbara (Mrs. C. Gingerich), Jacob, Phronica (Mrs. N. Roth), and Solomon. These children are all living and settled in this neighborhood, and all of them attended the large funeral which occurred on Sunday last at the Mennonite Church, 3rd line.

    Mr. Litwiller, a farmer near St. Agatha, died on Sunday last from injuries received in that village a day or two before, when he fell from a stairway, breaking several ribs and perforating his lungs. He was a very highly respected resident.
