THE NORTHS OF DUMFRIES AND GALT

By Richard L. North, Santa Fe, New Mexico

I was delighted to read the Summer 2003 edition of Our Waterloo Kin, especially its focus on Dumfries Township. With a Canadian cousin, Linda Aldridge of Etobicoke, whom I had the great good fortune to meet through genealogical correspondence, I have discovered the following:

Our earliest verifiable NORTH ancestor is DANIEL EDWARD NORTH, b. 5 Jan. 1823/24; d. 25 Sept. 1902, Little Current, Manitoulin Island. Daniel married ABIGAIL ALICE CAMP/KEMP 5 Jan.1849 in Galt. They had eleven children. Before the birth of her first child, Abigail was baptized at the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Galt 16 Dec. 1849 by Rev. M. Whiting. Abigail died in Little Current in 1900. Daniel Edward North remarried in 1902. On his marriage registration of 1902 he stated he was born in DUMFRIES and that his father's name was JOHN NORTH. No name was given for his mother. This marriage registration is the only source we have for tracing ancestors earlier than Daniel Edward North.

Daniel and Abigail are found in the 1851 Census of Galt. In 1861 the family were residing in Grey County; in 1865 in Leith, Grey County. The 1871 Census shows them with nine children, farming 113 acres outside the town of Hyde, Sarawak Twp. Grey County. Again the family moved on. Sometime between the 1873 and 1875, it settled in Howland Twp, Strawberry, La Cloche and Haywood Islands, near Manitoulin. Of their eleven children, my great grandfather, George Maurice North (b. 15 April 1854 Galt) emigrated to Jackson, Michigan where he began a large construction firm, responsible for many buildings in Southern Michigan. My cousin's great grandmother, Elizabeth North (b. 15 March 1856 Leith Twp.) married Benjamin Horsnell and settled in Owen Sound, Grey County. All eleven children of Daniel and Abigail North left Manitoulin Island but none returned to Dumfries. Thus, while the North family appears to have been early settlers of Dumfries, it abandoned those roots, following a usual migratory pattern in Upper Canada in the nineteenth century.

We are anxious to trace our earlier roots in Dumfries, particularly the John North identified by Daniel on his second marriage registration. A JOHN NORTH purchased land in Dumfries from its earliest developer, William Dickson in 1825.-

"Family - North, John - May 12, 1825 - Land Agreement between W. Dickson and John North, yeoman. - North gets the N. part of Lot 4, 6th Concession, 75 acres for 65/11/10 (65 pounds, 11 shillings and 10 pence) - witness - Murdock McFarland." A988.213.169 - MG 8 Vol. IV. May 12, 1825 - Note from W. Dickson giving 34 pounds/17s/ to the credit of John North's bond.

We do not know details of JOHN NORTH'S birth or death. What is known is that a JOHN NORTH married MARGARET GARRISON 12 Nov. 1809 at St. Andrews Presbyterian, Grimsby. (Rev. Nelles Marriage Register.) Later, we find that JOHN NORTH (widower) married CHARLOTTE WOOD (a spinster) in Ancaster, 29 Dec.1816. (Register of Baptisms and Marriages by Rev. Ralph Leeming.) Checking the Upper Canada Land Books Index (Vol. 4) we find - "North, John (settler) residence: Ireland 19 Aug 1819 -N 29 - John North - Praying for a grant of land as a settler. The petitioner having left Ireland before he could have heard Order in Council respecting gratuitous grants of land to persons of his denomination His Excellency taking his case into Special Consideration is pleased to Order him one hundred acres of land - 19th August, 1819." The location of this land is unknown. An 1819 agricultural assessment of Beverly Twp. shows a John North. The 1832 census of Dumfries shows John North with a household of nine people; 10 acres uncultivated; ½ acre cultivated and an assessed worth of merely 3 Pounds 10. The concession and lot numbers are not given.

There is also a record of the sale of land from John North to John Dickson, Instrument #230L, Halton County, 1845. We do not know if this sale concerns the same Lot 4 6th Concession John North purchased in 1825. On the other hand, we have found no other land transactions for this John North-anywhere!

My Ancestors Daniel and Abigail named their first born child Charlotte, perhaps after Daniel's mother if he was the offspring of the John North and Charlotte Wood married in Ancaster in 1816.

There are records of a HENRY NORTH in Dumfries and Galt. Waterloo Kin identifies a Henry North as a member of the Galt Circulating Library in 1836. Henry North married Elizabeth McIlroy (21 Aug 1845) at the Associated Presbyterian Church in Galt. This is the same church in which Daniel North was married in 1849. Were Henry and Daniel brothers? Henry had three children, as of the 1861 census of Ancaster, the eldest named John, perhaps after his father.

Recently we found a third NORTH, possibly of the same family. The Wesleyan Baptismal Records show the baptism of MARY ANN NORTH in 1862 in Pilkington Twp., Wellington Co. Her parents are listed as JOHN and CHARLOTTE NORTH of Ancaster. Could she be a sister of Henry and Daniel North? We have never found another record of John, Charlotte or Mary Ann North.

Can any readers help in strengthening the link between Daniel North and the John North mentioned above? Is there a source to confirm a relationship between Henry, Mary Ann, and Daniel? I can be contacted at

    Notes:

At the time of the revolutionary war Robert and his brother, John, left their father s home in New Jersey and came to Canada, taking up land near Niagara. They were U. E. Loyalists. They lived down at Niagara for some years. Then Robert sold his farm, for which he got eight hundred silver dollars. Though Robert and John were brothers, they differed about how their name should be spelled. John spelled his name Kemp, and Robert spelled his Camp. The date when Robert sold out I cannot give, but however, he took his $800 and came to Beverly with his family and bought eight hundred acres here in front of the township. The family consisted of seven sons and two daughters. He settled on the north fifty of Lot 23, first concession, and also owned the south one hundred acres of Lot 23, second concession. These two lots were considered the homestead. He gave each of his sons 100 acres. David had the south 100 of Lot 20, second concession.
