Sgt. Pt. Geo. Munch of Galt Killed in Action Sept. 12

Sgt. Pilot George Wesley Munch, WO2, 26 years of age, was "killed on active service overseas on Sept. 12," according to a telegram received today by his wife at 9 Davidson St. from the R.C.A.F. casualties officer.

Sgt. Pilot Munch was the only son of Mr. and Mrs. Wesley Munch of Hespeler and he was a brother of Mrs. Harry Ferguson of Hespeler. With his wife is their only child, Dennis, 14 months old, whom he had never seen.

Sgt. Pilot Munch had been on loan from the R.C.A.F. to the Royal Air force and was piloting transport planes, according to the most recent information received by his family. Details of his death were not made available.

Very early in the war Sgt. Pilot Munch heard the call to arms and on Sept. 11, 1939, he enlisted with the Royal Canadian Army Service corps. During 14 months that he spent in Britain with the Canadian army, he was on the move to Brest in France just before Dunkirk.

At the end of the 14 months he was transferred to the Royal Navy's fleet air arm. He trained in England for several months and in the fall of 1941 he returned to Canada for further training. Late in Oct., 1941, he was the only Ontario man among a large class of pilots who received flying badges at 31 Service Flying Training school, Kingston. After a brief leave from duty he was sent overseas again and after further service he went from the Fleet Air arm to duties with the R.A.F.

Though he related little of his actual work in his letters home, his family believed that he must have been engaged in work that took him on long flights. Mrs. Munch said that just a few weeks ago he had been promoted to the rank of warrant officer and that. he was planning to return to Galt quite soon for a spell from active duty.

Sgt. Pilot Munch was born in Galt. He received his public school education in Hespeler and his high school education at the Galt Collegiate. His many friends in both communities will hear with deep regret of his death on active service.
