    Bender, Catherine, daughter of Christian and Lydia (Schwartzentruber) Roth, was born in Wellesley Twp., Ont., Aug. 27, 1885; died at Tavistock, Ont., May 31, 1983; aged 97 y. On Oct. 2, 1912, she was married to Moses J. Bender, who died on Dec. 10, 1974. Surviving are 4 sons (Arthur, Alvin, Elon, and Nelson), 2 daughters (Lydia-Mrs. Mahlon Zehr and Katie-Mrs. Vernon Zehr), 33 grandchildren, 67 great-grandchildren, and one sister (Mary-Mrs. Chris Streicher). She was preceded in death by one son (Wilmer). She was a member of Cassel Mennonite Church. Funeral services were held at East Zorra Mennonite Church on June 2, in charge of Dan Nighswander and Glen Zehr; interment in East Zorra Mennonite Cemetery.

    Bender, Mrs. Catherine (Moses J.) - On Tuesday, May 31, 1983, at Bonnie Brae Nursing Home, Tavistock, the former Catherine Roth, in her 98th year, formerly of RR 1, New Hamburg and Tavistock. She was a member of the Cassel Mennonite Church and a daughter of the late Christian N. Roth and the former Lydia Schwartzentruber. Beloved wife of the late Moses J. Bender, whom she married October 8, 1912 and who predeceased her December 10, 1974; lovingly remembered by four sons, Arthur, Alvin, and Elon, all of New Hamburg and Nelson of Lucan; two daughters, Lydia (Mrs. Mahlon Zehr) of Tavistock and Katie (Mrs. Vernon Zehr) of New Hamburg; one sister, Mrs. Mary Streicher of Poole; 33 grandchildren and 67 great-grandchildren. Predeceased by one son, Wilmer; one daughter, Elmina in infancy; two brothers; three sisters and six grandchildren. Friends and relatives may call at the Mark Jutzi Funeral Home, 291 Huron St., New Hamburg, until Thursday noon, when transfer will be made to the 16th Line East Zorra Mennonite Church for service at 2: 30 p.m., with Rev. Dan NIghswander and Rev. Glenn Zehr officiating. Interment to follow in the church cemetery.

    Death of John M. Bender

    The death took place on Tuesday last at his home in Wilmot and South Easthope Townline of a well known and highly respected resident of this neighborhood in the person of Mr. John M. Bender at the age of 69 years, 10 months, and 13 days. The deceased had been in failing health for the past six months, but had been able to be about until a few days before his death, when he sunk rapidly and passed away. The late Mr. Bender was born in Wilmot Township, the son of the late John Bender. After his marrage in 1870 to Catharine Ruby he lived in East Zorra for six years, but for nearly 40 years he followed the occupation of farming on the place where he died. Three years ago he retired and came to New Hamburg for a short time after which he made his home with his son Joseph. Mr. Bender was a successful farmer and beloved by all who knew him. He leaves to mourn his loss, besides his widow, four sons and one daughter, namely: Joseph, John and Moses of Wilmot, Sam uel J. of New Hamburg, and Annie at home. He is also survived by three brothers, Solomon olomon and David of East Zorra, and Samuel of New Hamburg. The funeral took place on Thursday forenoon to the 16th line Cemetery, East Zora. We extend to the bereaved family our heartfelt sympathy.

    Mrs. John M. Bender

    The death occurred at the home of her son, Mr. Joseph J. Bender, on Tuesday, July 26th, of Mrs. Catharine Bender, at the age of 80 years, 8 months and 12 days. She had been ill for several weeks. The deceased was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Ruby and was born in East Zorra. Fifty-eight years ago she was married to John M. Bender and for a while resided on the 15th line, East Zorra, but for many years resided on the Bender homestead just west of New Hamburg. She was highly esteemed by a large circle of friends. Her husband died ten years ago, but she leaves four sons, Joseph, John, Samuel and Moses, one adopted daughter, Mrs. Chr. Bender, of Cassel, and one daughter, Annie, at home. She is also survived by two sisters. Mrs. Jos. M. Bender, Gravel Road, and Mrs. Peter Y. Zehr. South Easthope, and two brothers. Joseph Ruby, in Colorado, and Nicholas, in Ellice. There are also ten grandchildren. The funeral will be held this forenoon at 9.30 o'clock to the East Zorra A. M. Church and Cemetery.

    Roth - Christian N., son of Christian and Catherine (Lichty) Roth, was born in Wellsley, Ont., Jan. 2, 1857; died April 16, 1938; aged 81 y. 3 m. 14 d. After an attack of pneumonia for four days, he passed quietly away. At the age of sixteen he was baptized and united with the Amish Mennonite Church to which faith he staunchly held until his death. He was united in marriage to Lydia Swartzentruber on Sept. 25, 1877, who preceded him in death Sept. 17, 1922. Two sons and five daughters mourn his departure (Mrs. Fanny Wagler, Wellsley; Mrs. Katie Bender, New Hamburg; Christ S., Britton; Leah S., at home; Mrs. Mary Streicher, Milverton; Mrs. Lydia Bender, New Hamburg; Jacob S., Ontario, Calif.); also 32 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren, 4 brothers and 1 adopted son mourn his departure. Funeral services were held at the Maple View Amish Mennonite Church, conducted by Bros. Peter Nafziger, Dan Lebold, and Moses Roth. Texts, I Thess. 2: 12, 13; II Cor. 5: 1.

    WELLESLEY. The death occurred after a short illness of Christian Roth, 82-year-old resident of this village. He is survived by five daughters, two sons and four brothers.

    Funeral services were held held yesterday afternoon from his late residence to Maple View Amish Mennonite Church, third line Wellesley, with interment in the adjoining cemetery.

It was while on a visit to her brother and wife (the latter being very sick) that she was called to the great beyond. On entering the yards on her brother's premises she immediately noticed the many vehicles there and concluded that death had entered the home. Her heart failed and in less that fifteen minutes she passed away. Deceased was born in Wilmot township, Sept. 7, 1858 and united with the Amish Mennonite Church of that place in the year 1874. On Sept. 25, 1877, she was married to Christian N. Roth of Wellesley. She leaves husband, 2 sons, 5 daughters, 1 sister, 5 brothers, and a host of friends. Funeral services were conducted by Bros. Christian Litwiller and Daniel Steinman. Texts, I Sam. 20: 3; Rom. 8: 1-11. Burial at the Third Line cemetery.

    MRS. C. N. ROTH

    Lydia Schwartzentruber, beloved wife of Christian N. Both, passed away at Wellesley, Ont., at the age of 64 years and 10 days. She had been in falling health for some time, suffering from a weak heart. It was while on a vislt to her youngest brother and wife at Petersburg (the latter being very sick) that she was called to the Great Beyond. On entering the yard on her brother's premises she noticed the many vehicles there and immediately concluded that death had entered the home. Her heart failed and in less than fifteen minutes she passed away, while lying in the arms of her beloved husband and brother, John.

    Deceased was born in Wilmot township on Sept. 7th, 1858, and united with the Amish Mennonite church at that place in the year 1874. On Sept. 25th, 1877, she was married to Christian N. Roth of Wellesley, To them were born seven children, two sons and five daughters: Mrs. Noah Wagler (Fannie), at Wellesey; Mrs. Moses J. Bender (Katie), at New Hamburg: Christ., at Britton, Ont.; Leah and Mary, at home; Mrs. Christ. Bender (Lydia), at New Hamburg. Jacob, at Hesston, Kansas. Fifteen grand- children also survive. She also leaves to mourn her loss five brothers and one sisters, all of Petersburg, Ont., besides a host of friends and relatives.

    The funeral was held at one o'clock at the house and interment was made at the Third Line cemetery. After burial, funeral services were held, conducted by Bro. Christ. Litwiller, who spoke from the text I Sam. 20:3, and Bro. Daniel Steinman, who took for his text Rom. 8:1-11.
