    LICHTI, Laverne - Of 36 Jacob St. W., Tavistock, passed away, suddenly, on Tuesday, Jan. 12, 1993, as the result of a farm accident, in his 71st year. Born in South Easthope township, a son of the late Noah Lichti and the former Nelda Schwartzentruber and they farmed in North Easthope township until moving to Tavistock 10 years ago.

    He is survived by his wife; three sons, John and Norma Lichti, David Lichti and Jane Colwell, Roy and Mardi Lichti, all of RR 1, New Hamburg; his daughters, Ruth and Dwight Steinman of Tavistock, Ruby and Miguel Barrenengoa of Argentina, Diane and Bruce Bechtel of RR 1, New Hamburg, Emilia and Roman Orlinski of RR 1, Wellesley; brothers, David and Fannie Lichti of New Hamburg, Nick and Verna Lichti of Stratford, Julius and Floretta Lichti of RR 1, New Hamburg, Willis and Laura Lichti of New Hamburg, Louis and Lauretta Lichti of RR 1, Shakespeare; sisters, Annie and Elmer Roth of RR 1, Baden, Magdalene and Emerson Wagler of Shakespeare, Catherine and Floyd Steinman of Tavistock; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Kaye Lichti of Woodstock, Vernon and Elizabeth Swartzentruber of Tavistock, Katie and Wilmer Wagler of RR 1, New Hamburg, Willis and Hilda Swartzentruber of Tavistock. Also survived by 15 grandchildren.

    Predeceased by a brother, Albert; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Barbara and Allan Bast, Selma Litwiller, Walter Bender, Milton Litwiller, Mabel Litwiller, Elroy Swartzentruber, Annie Swartzentruber and S.W. Swartzentruber. Friends will be received at the Francis Funeral Home, 77 Woodstock St. N., Tavistock, this evening (Wednesday) from 7-9 p.m. and Thursday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Burial will take place at the 16th Line Mennonite Cemetery on Friday at 1: 30 p.m., followed by a memorial service at the 16th Line East Zorra Mennonite Church, at 2: 30 p.m., Rev. Darrel Toews assisted by Rev. Vernon Zehr will officiate.

    LICHTI, Nelda Nelda Lichti, 87, of Tavistock passed away on Saturday, October 8, 2011. She was born on December 8, 1923 in East Zorra Township, Oxford County, a daughter of the late Joel and Sarah (Bender) Schwartzentruber. On November 17, 1943 she married Laverne Lichti, who predeceased her on January 12, 1993. Nelda is survived by her six children, fifteen grandchildren and two great-grand-children; John and Norma Lichti of New Hamburg, Chris (Kim) Lichti, Abby, Garrett, and Sarah Lichti; Dan Lichti of Kitchener and Deena Mandell, Andrew Lichti and Rebecca Lichti; Roy and Mardi Lichti, of New Hamburg, Tim (Annie) Lichti, Derrick Lichti, Alyssa (Dave) Kerfoot; Ruth and Dwight Steinman of Tavistock, Maria Steinman, Bethany Steinman, Catherine Steinman; Ruby and Miguel Barrenengoa of Argentina, Pablo Barrenengoa, Emily Barrenengoa, Amanda Barrenengoa; Diane Lichti and Bruce Bechtel of New Hamburg, Craig Bechtel, Evan Bechtel. Nelda was also the Canadian mother and grandmother of Roman and Emilia Orlinski, and Monika of Wellesley. She was predeceased by her great-grandson Connor Lichti, May, 2002. Nelda is survived by her brother-in-law Wilmer Wagler and sister-in-law Hilda Swartzentruber. She was pre-deceased by her brothers and sisters Vernon Swartzentruber (Elizabeth); Elroy Swartzentruber (Annie Mae), (Verda); Selma Bender Litwiller (Walter), (Milton); Katie Wagler; Willis Swartzentruber. Also survived by her Lichti brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Elmer and Annie Roth, Magdalena Wagler, Louis and Loretta Lichti, Floyd and Catherine Steinman. She was predeceased by her Lichti brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Allen and Barbara Bast, David and Fannie Lichti, Nicholas and Verna Lichti, Albert and Kaye Lichti, Julius and Floretta Lichti, Willis and Laura Lichti, Emerson Wagler. Nelda and Laverne farmed together in North Easthope Township for over 35 years. Hidden Acres Camp and Retreat Centre grew out of a corner of their farm, and both Nelda and Laverne, along with many good friends and peers contributed countless hours of hard work to the building and development of the camp, now almost 50 years old. Nelda was a hard worker and good organizer, and served in many ways and many places. She offered her talents at various times to Rockway Mennonite High School, Nithview Auxiliary, MCC New Hamburg Thrift Store, MCC Relief Sale. Nelda and Laverne served several times with Mennonite Disaster Service in short term work assignments following natural disasters in Canada and the United States. She was a member and active participant of Tavistock Mennonite Church. Nelda was an avid gardener, loved flowers and never missed an opportunity to share her appreciation of a new bud or healthy plant with others. Although she kept herself busy, she always made time for a visit. She appreciated all of her many nieces and nephews, loved to travel, and stay connected with her many friends and relatives. Relatives and friends will be received at the Tavistock Mennonite Church on Monday, October 10th, 7-9 p.m., and Tuesday, October 11th, 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Burial will be on Wednesday, October 12th at 10 a.m. at East Zorra Mennonite Church Cemetery on 16th Line, followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. at Tavistock Mennonite Church. In lieu of flowers, donations to Hidden Acres Endowment Fund or a charity of your choice would be appreciated.     Bender - David M., 8th son of the late John and Catherine (Miller) Bender, was born Jan. 28, 1864, in Waterloo Co., Ont., where he grew to manhood. He accepted Christ as his personal Savior in his youth and was received in church fellowship by water baptism by Bishop John Gascho of the Wilmot congregation. In this faith he remained faithful to the end. On Dec. 6, 1887 he was joined in holy wedlock to Sister Barbara Zehr of East Zorra. After their marriage they settled in East Zorra. After their marriage they settled in East Zorra and were faithful members in East Zorra congregation, always present at church services, rain or shine, although having several miles to come. This union was blessed with 4 children (Peter of East Zorra; Bena, wife of Noah Lichti, of South Easthope; Annie, wife of Limon Hellmuth, near Ingersoll, Ont.; Katie, wife of Joel Albrecht, of East Zorra). He always enjoyed fairly good health with the exception of last year of his life. In November, 1934, he went to Stratford General Hospital for an operation which proved unsuccessful and thencoming to the home of his son-in-law (Noah Lichti in South Easthope) where he suffered severely at times till death relieved him on March 29, 1935; aged 71 y. 2 m. 1 d. He leaves his bereaved companion, 1 son, 3 daughters, 31 gandchildren, and 2 great-grandchildren. Services at home by Jacob R. Bender, and at the East Zorra Church by M.Kuepfer, D.S.Iutzi, and Jacob R. Bender. Interment in adjoining cemetery.

    Mrs. Catherine Schwartzentruber, 78, widow of the late Joel Schwartzentruber, died on Wednesday at the home of her son-in-law, Christian Leis, after a long illness. A native of Waterloo County, she lived for 55 years in East Zorra. Mrs. Schwartzentruber was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Michael Yantz. She was a member of the Amish-Mennonite church, 16th line of East Zorra. Surviving are a son, Joel, a daughter, Mrs. Christian Leis, both of East Zorra, a stepson, Jacob, of Tavistock, and a stepdaughter, Mrs. Aaron Ruby of Colorado. Funeral services will be on Saturday at 1.30 p.m. at the home of the son-in-law, Concession 13, thence to East Zorra Amish-Mennonite church, 16th line, for memorial service. Interment will be in the adjoining cemetery. Bishop Daniel Iutzi of East Zorra and Bishop Amos Schwartzentruber, missionary-on-furlough from South America, will officiate.

    Bender. - Jacob M. Bender was born at New Hamburg, Ont.; aged 72 y. 1 m. 10 d. He united with the A. M. Church in his early youth and was married to Elizabeth Miller, Oct. 6, 1863, who died May 12, 1864. He was afterwards married to Maria Ruby. To this union were born 4 sons and 8 daughters. He leaves to mourn his departure his aged companion, 4 sons, 6 daughters, 5 brothers, 30 grandchildren. He was ordained deacon in the East Zora congregation in August, 1871. In 1883 he was ordained minister of the Gospel and in 1887 was unanimously chosen and ordained bishop of his home congregation. He faithfully and earnestly administered to the needs of the Church at home and abroad. He performed 136 marriages and baptized 400 converts and took part in almost every funeral service he was present. He was always willing to lend a helping hand wherever asked. Sermon at the house by C. S. Zehr by reading Psa. 90, with a few remarks at the church. C. Kropf read II Tim. 4: 7,8. S. J. Schwartzendruber of Huron Co., Mich., spoke earnestly on II Cor. 5: 1-10. Burial in cemetery adjoining.

    Bender. - Sister Mary Bender was born in Perth Co., Ont., Feb. 10, 1845; died in Oxford Co., Ont., at the home of her son-in-law, John B. Schwartzendruber, Feb. 2, 1916; aged 70 y. 11 m. 2 d. In early youth she united with the East Zorra A. M. Church and remained faithful to the end. She was a daughter of the late Bishop Joseph Rudy. Oct. 11, 1864, she was married to Jacob M. Bender and lived in matrimony 49 y. 9 m. 3 d. To this union were born 4 sons and 8 daughters, 2 daughters having died about 30 years ago. The sons are John, Joseph, Jacob, David; the daughters, Katie, Mary, Christena, Annie, Lydia, Sarah, all living in South Easthope and East Zorra. July 14, 1914, her husband died, and since that time she made her home with Sister Lydia, having lived nearly all her life on the farm owned by her father and at present owned by her son, Pre. Jacob R. Bender. She lived a widow 1 y. 6 m. 19 d. She leaves to mourn her loss 4 sons, 6 daughters, and 35 grandchildren, also 2 brothers and 3 sisters. Funeral from the home of her son Jacob was held on Feb. 6, where she was laid to rest at the side of her husband in the East Zorra A. M. Cemetery. Funeral services by Bro. Dan Jutzi at home and in the meeting house by Bros. D. H. Steinman and Chris. Kropf. Texts II Cor. 4: 13-81 and II Tim. 4: 6-8. A large number of friends were gathered to pay their last tribute to the departed.
