    BEATTIE, FRANCIS WALKER

Member of Old Puslinch Township Family Passes

Was Born Eight Miles South of Guelph in 1850 - Parents Were Pioneers

A native of Puslinch, a resident of the Blair district for over sixty years, quietly, at his home, on Wednesday at about 6 p.m., [March 29, 1933], in his 84th year. He had been in declining health for the past year. He had always taken a keen interest in the village of Blair. The eldest son of William Beattie and Isabelle Walker, who came to this country from Scotland, he was born in 1850 on the east side of the Brock Road in Puslinch, some eight miles south of Guelph. The family lived on different farms throughout Puslinch until Mr. Beattie was 20 years old, when his father purchased a farm in the Dickie Settlement. The village of Blair was then known as Shinglebridge, later Carlisle, which soon changed to Blair. Until the age of 25, Mr. Beattie was engaged in work on the farm. In 1875, he married Janet, daughter of Alexander Fleming and Jeannie Cockburn, pioneer settlers of Puslinch Township and settled on a farm on the outskirts of Blair. A considerable part of the land was then uncleared. With a team of horses and a yoke of oxen, he cleared the fields of stumps, using them to make fences, one or two of which are still giving service. About 1895, he turned his attentions to the development of a celery farm, building greenhouses and employing a large staff of men, his products soon becoming famous throughout the district. In 1912, he retired from farming, an avocation he had followed all his life except for a time, when he worked as a wagonmaker in the wagon shop in Blair, which at the time employed thirteen hands. He always took a keen interest in all moral questions and in religion was a faithful Presbyterian. For over forty years, he had been interested in the welfare of the Blair Union Sunday School and served for some nineteen years as the teacher of the Bible Class. Mr. Beattie was the only remaining member of his family who still resided in Ontario, the others being in California, with the exception of one sister, who lives in Vancouver. He is survived by his widow, Janet Fleming and children: Jean, Lillian and Jessie, at home; Mrs. Victor Peterson of Hamilton; William of Preston; and Alexander of Blair. Many paid tribute to one of Blair's grand old men at the funeral which was held from his residence on Sat., Apr. 1 at 2: 30 to Blair Cemetery. Rev. M. Geiger of St. Paul's United Church and Rev. Walter Patterson of Knox Presbyterian Church officiated. There were many floral tributes. Pallbearers: Aaron Hilborn of Galt; Joseph Hilborn of Preston; R. H. Dickson, E. T. Grasett, J. Bradley and Mr. McEwen of Blair.

Death of a Former Resident of Puslinch

Word was sent to Mr. Stirton, Postmaster of the death of William Beattie of West Dumfries, early Thursday morning, in his 69th year. He will be remembered by the older residents of Guelph and Puslinch as the eldest son of Francis Beattie, who settled in Puslinch in the year 1835. After he grew up, he farmed for a good many years in Puslinch and about twenty years ago, moved to Waterloo County, where he continued farming. He had been failing for some time but last Saturday, he was seized with paralysis, which gradually spread all over the body. He was of a quiet, kindly disposition, scrupulously honest and honourable in all his dealings and was held in the highest respect by all who knew him. He leaves a widow and nine children all of whom were present at his death except one daughter and two sons. One of his sons, Rev. Andrew Beattie is a Presbyterian minister in New York City. Mr. Beattie was buried on Saturday.

"In 1834, Alexander Fleming, a young boy of eight years, known familiarly as Sandy, emigrated with his widowed mother, Lillias (nee Gregor), his two younger brothers, John and James, and his Gregor grandparents, Peter and Margaret, with their family of seven. In one record, Sandy also mentions his half sister who also came. (Perhaps his father was a widower with one child, when Lillias married him.) They sailed on the ?Alfred of Alloway?, which carried eight Scottish families on board. The voyage took nine weeks and three days. They were short of water, and the food was mostly fat pork and black bread, with one bowl of oatmeal porridge in the morning."

    FLEMING, ALEXANDER

At the home of his daughter, Mrs. Frank Beattie of Blair, on Wednesday, August 25, 1926, in his 101st year. Former resident of Puslinch. He was in his usual good health and in process of all his faculties, until a few days previous to his death. Mr. Fleming was born in Edinburgh and came to this country with his mother, when he was 8 years of age. They settled in Morriston but it was not long after their arrival that his mother died and Sandy, cast on his own resources, went to work for a farmer in the neighbourhood. Here he learned in the school of hard work, that splendid characteristic which helped him all through life, namely, self reliance. In the course of time, he bought a bush farm situated on the tenth concession, about three miles from Aberfoyle. After many years of hard work, the farm was finally cleared. The old log house in which he first lived is still standing, reminiscent of the days of his early struggles and the scene of his first home joys. A beautiful home now stands on the old farm, a monument to his industry and progressiveness. Survived by three daughters, Mrs. Frank Beattie of Blair; Mrs. Hugh Reid of Galt; Mrs. George Dixon of Hamilton; and one son, Alexander on the old homestead. Funeral was held at the home of his daughter in Blair on Sat. , Aug. 28 at 1 and interment took place in Crown Cemetery. Rev. Buchanan Carey of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Guelph conducted the service. Five grandsons and one great-grandson acted as pallbearers.

    Notes:

Enoch Detweiler," was born in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, March 7th, 1818. In 1822 his parents moved to Canada and settled a little west of Roseville, Ontario, where he was raised. On January 18th, 1842, he was married to Abigail, daughter of George B. and Mary (Shoemaker) Bechtel. She was born near Pottstown, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, October 8th, 1821. After their marriage they moved on his father's old homestead where they resided until his death which took place September 18th, 1874. When a young man he was converted unto the Lord and soon thereafter joined himself with the Mennonite body. On June 5th, 1859, Mr Detweiler was ordained as a minister of the Gospel for the Detweiler field of labor. In all his sermons and exhortations he urged upon his followers holiness of life, and uprightness and godliness in all manner of conversation. What should it benefit one to be a full believer in the tenets of Simon Menno, if his actions did not conform thereto, and his walk be upright and pure. In a holy and consecrated life, therefore, as he taught, did all christian godliness consist. But in the midst of his days the arrow of death bore our beloved minister, brother and friend from the scenes of his life's activity, and from the companionship of his beloved wife and family besides that of his faithful circle of followers, and his freed spirit winged its course beyond the skies where we are promised rest from all our labors. His widow has her home with her son, Aaron, who resides on the old homestead. She is quite active yet for a person of her age. Their family consisted of ten children"

Roseville Mennonite Church (Detweiler Meeting House)

Services began in homes in the area with the arrival of the first settlers around 1822. A first meeting house was built about 1830 approximately a half-mile west of Roseville, on the south side of the road. One acre of land on the northeast corner of Lot 37, Concession 11, North Dumfries Township, was transferred from Samuel C. Snyder. The deed for the property was dated 1830, but it was not registered until August 1842. A stone meeting house was built in 1855 just slightly east of the old log meeting house; the church was dedicated on November 25, 1855 by the congregation's first minister, Jacob F. Detweiler. Henry Shantz, Enoch Detweiler and Solomon Gehman were the ministers who followed Jacob F. Detweiler.

Sunday School began in 1924 and in 1933 Young People's Bible Meetings were organized. The latter meetings were held in conjunction with those of the Blenheim Mennonite Church. A Sunday School classroom was added to the Detweiler church in 1956.

Moses Bowman, a layman from First Mennonite Church in Kitchener, was ordained minister to Detweiler Mennonite Church in 1938 where he continued to serve until the time of his death in 1964. The small congregation was served by visiting ministers until it disbanded in January 1966. Some of the remaining families are reported to have joined with Blenheim Mennonite Church at that time.
