    Notes:

    Henry B. Martin of Woolwich Township died Dec. 2 at the Elmira Private Hospital. He was 90. He was the youngest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Isaac B. Martin of Elmira. Surviving are one son, Abner B. Martin of RR 2, West Montrose; one daughter, Mrs. Angus (Adeline) Weber of RR 2, Waterloo; one sister, Mrs. Henry Good, Goshen Ind., seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Mr. Martin was predeceased by his wife, the former Lovina Bauman; one daughter, Marion; one sister and five brothers. The funeral was held Tuesday at the Dreisinger Funeral Chapel. Service followed at Martin's Meeting House. Interment was in the adjoining cemetery.

    George H. Baumann, "the fourth son of Joseph and Elizabeth (Hoffman) Baumann, was born March 17th, 1832. On February 3rd, 1857, he married Judith W., daughter of John and Anna (Weber) Martin. She was born July 16th, 1838. On February 17th, 1857, they moved on their farm in the township of Woolwich, a little to the south of the village of Elmira (lot No. 87, German Company's Tract). Here they still reside and are managing their large farm. They have a family of thirteen children, viz."

    Obituary: As we are preparing to go to press we are informed that Mr. Geo. H. Bauman, one of our most respected and progressive farmers, has died. Mr. Bauman was one of the earliest settlers in this neighborhood having moved to the farm on which he ended his days and part of which is within the limits of the Corporation of Elmira, in the prime of his manhood. He was known as a man of character, industrious reliable and considerate of the rights of his fellow citizens. He was very successful in his calling and acquired several farms in the immediate vicinity of Elmira. He was of a kind disposition and made many friends, who together with his wife and family of 8 sons and 4 daughters mourn his loss. Possessing a robust constitution and an energetic mind he was always active until several years ago when he was stricken by partial paralysis. Although he gradually rallied from the effects of this misfortune he was never the same afterwards repeated attacks and their effect confined him to his house a considerable part of the time. He reached the age of 72 years. His remains will be entered in the Mennonite Cemetery at Elmira, next Saturday forenoon.

    THE OLD SCHOOLHOUSE

    An interesting meeting took place the Saturday before last in the old log cabin in Waterloo Park.

    This house was, of course, the first schoolhouse in this area and stood originally on the school-house square at the corner of King and Church Streets in Waterloo. It was built in 1820 and served its purpose until 1842, when it was torn down and a 1-storey stone house was constructed on the site. The dismantled log house was erected again in Greenbush and served as a residence for a long time for the coloured man, Mr. Carroll and his family. In the course of this year, the Waterloo Park Commissioners purchased the house, moved it to their park and furnished it again as it was when it was a school-house.

    At this gathering, in addition to many other ladies and gentlemen, the following (male and female) former pupils attended, took their places on the benches, and were called to order by the 82-year-old teacher, Benjamin Burkholder, who held the scepter, or rather, the switch, from 1831 to 1842 in the old log-house: Joel Guth, 80 years old; Abraham Scherk, Blair, 79; Jakob Bricker, Waterloo, 77; Sarah Burkholder, nee Erb, Bridgeport, 75; Amos Weber, Berlin, 73; John C, Bricker, Hawksville, 71; Maria Erb, nee Quickfall, Norwich 69; David B. In addition, to these, the teacher read the names of 25 pupils from the roll; they were, however, absent.

    Mr. Burkholder gave an interesting talk about the history of the old school-house, and after him, Rev. J.A. MacLachlan, Rev. J. McNair, Mr. J.E. Baumann, M.P., and Mr. Jakob Ratz spoke about the old days which brought many things out of the past to mind again. School was, as a rule, only in session in winter and the costs were borne by the parents of the children. There were few subjects taught, namely: Reading, Writing and Sums. The children heard little about language, and geography; no child had more than 2 or 3 books. The predominant language was German. The pupils learned to read and write English, but didn't understand a word of it. Among the teachers in the old school-house from 1820-1842, with the exception of Mr. Burkholder, were the following whose names are still recognized: Jephtha DeKay, Joseph Guth, John Herringer, Peter Otto, John Dobbin, Elias Eby, Robert Barber, & Joseph Eby.

    After those present, on hearing the various speeches felt themselves transported back to the past, the school was closed at four o'clock and the pupils were gathered together in front of the school and photographed as a group. On their return into the school, they found it had been transformed into a dining room with heavily-laden tables, which the old-timers thoroughly enjoyed. After everyone had chatted cordially for a while longer, the gathering broke up. The company will not meet again in complete numbers, nor in such a way.

    Benjamin Martin, "twin brother to Joseph and the eighth son of Peter and Anna (Zimmerman) Martin, was born in Earl Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, December 4th, 1811. He was in his eighth year when he came to Canada. On October 20th, 1835, he was married to Mary, daughter of Dennis Devitt and sister to the late Barnabas Devitt of Waterloo. She was born August 30th, 1815, and died June 28th, 1848. On March 6th, 1849, he was again married to Mary, daughter of Abraham and Veronica (Shantz) Biehn. She was born September 30th, 1816. Soon after his first marriage he moved on lot No. 20, German Company's Tract, about three miles north-west of Waterloo. Here he has resided ever since. The farm is now owned by his son, Moses. He has had a family of nine children, six with his first wife and three with his second wife."

    Joseph Baumann, "the second son of Wendel Baumann and his wife Maria (Huber) Baumann, was born in Berks County, Pennsylvania, March 8th, 1796, came to Canada in 1819 and settled three miles north-west of the town of Waterloo, where he died December 21st, 1864. They had a family of seven children. "

    Joseph Baumann, "son of Wendel and Mary (Huber) Baumann, grandson of Christian Baumann, and great grandson of the old progenitor, Wendel Baumann, was born in the Alleghany Valley, Berks County, Pennsylvania, March 8th, 1796. In May, 1819, he left his native home and came to Canada, arriving at old Abraham Erb's place in Waterloo, some time in the month of June. After being here for a few weeks he engaged himself to Abraham Erb to manufacture flour barrels, and other ware belonging to the coopering trade. He had his home with old Christian Schantz who resided on a large farm, about one and one-half miles south-east of Berlin, now in possession Aaron B. Shantz. Here he formed the acquaintance of Anna, the eldest daughter of Christian Shantz, whom he married September 23rd, 1821. She was born October 19th, 1801, and died October 19th, 1822, aged 21 years. This union, although of but thirteen months duration, was blessed with one child, a daughter named Anna, who was born July 16th, 1822, and died August 10th, 1822, aged 25 days. After the decease of his wife he still continued in the services of old Abraham Erb, and had his home with his father-in-law. Some time during the year 1824 he formed an acquaintance with Elizabeth, daughter of George and Barbara (Good) Hoffman. She was born February 12th, 1795. On February 20th, 1825 they were married. In the spring of the same year they moved on their farm, being composed of lot No. 27, German Company's Tract. Here they resided until their deaths. He died December 21st, 1864, and she died May 6th, 1879. Their family consists of seven children,"

She was born in Berlin, Waterloo County, August 14th, 1811. After their marriage they moved on their farm situated in Woolwich Township, about three miles north of Waterloo. Here they resided until 1857, then moved on the farm now possessed by their son, Enos. Here he died November 20th, 1879. She is still living and is quite strong and active for a person of such an age. Her home is with her son Enos. Mr. Martin had a family of twelve children"
