    Notes:

I n 1860 Messrs. Gideon Ochs, George Guenther and John Sachs entered into partnership in the Carpenter business under style: Gideon Ochs & Co., which partnership subsisted until 1864 when Mr. Guenther withdrew to go with Fred. Guggisburg. For a time the remaining two partners continued. Both partnerships owned property in Hespeler.

From 1867 until 1874 Gideon Ochs appears personally as a carpenter, from 1870 on, as resident. Because he lived in the Township and owned no property in Hespeler Mr. John Sachs does not appear on our assessment rolls subsequent to 1864 when evidently the Partnership ceased. Mr. John Sachs apparently worked with Mr. Ochs or with his brother, Henry Sachs (or both) until about 1874 when he went as Boss Carpenter, Millwright and General Maintenance man for J. Schofield & Co. where he remained until his death in 1887.

When he went to work at the Lower Mill, Mr. Sachs took along as Millwright, Gideon Ochs, who left around 1876 and moved to the farm west of the Guelph Road just above the Block Line. John Wehner and Fred. Fiedler worked for John Sachs at the Lower Mill and during the time there of Mr. John Sachs, many of the mill houses were built.

All the men were more or less injured. The following is a list of the names of those who, at the time of sending away this news, are in critical condition: - Mr. John Sachs, boss mechanic, Mr. Conwarf, sr., Edward Johnston, Fred. Sohonfeldt, John Wehner and David Guenther. Mr. Sachs it is feared will not recover from the injuries received.

Drs. Mcintyre and Lockhart are in close attendance on the patients who are most seriously injured.

It is needless to add all was done that was possible to do to relieve the injured men, In a few minutes hundreds of willing hands were engaged removing the debris from above the men, who fell with the timbers and lay buried beneath the same, and as one by one were extricated from their pinned position received kind attention in the way of washing the blood from their wounds and placed in some adjoining house or taken to their respective homes. None were allowed to be removed until examined by the doctors.

    Hespeler Correspondence.

    BURIAL OF MR. SACHS.
On Friday afternoon last the funeral of Mr. John Sachs, aged fifty-two years, took place from his late residence to the Hespeler cemetery. The funeral was conducted by the Ancient Order of United Workmen, the member of said Society turning out in large numbers, and presenting a fine appearance, dressed neatly in dark colored clothes, wearing white gloves and the regular A. O. U. W. badge. Many of the brethren were from distant places; among the number we noticed some from Galt, Guelph, Morriston, Weston and Preston. In addition to the society all the employees of the Star Mills, male and and female, marched, also many of the villagers as well as a large number from a distance. There were sixty-four single carriages and twenty three double carriages in the line of procession. Among the number was the carriage of the firm, for whom the deceased had worked for so many years, the occupants thereof being Mr. Robert Forbes and son George. The procession was twenty minutes passing a given point. Rev. Mr. Haigh officiated at the house previous to conveying the remains of the deceased there from, and the Rev. pastor of the Lutheran church conducted the services at the grave. The funeral sermon was preached in the Lutheran church, of which deceased was a staunch adherent, by the pastor, on Sunday evening last, a large congregation attending.

    DOING WELL

All the men injured through the accident at the Star Woollen Mills, on Wednesday the 24th, are doing full as well as can be expected.

    Notes:

Jacob Roos, an Alsatian, worked at his trade of Cooper in a shop John Erb operated in connection with his grist mill at Preston from the early thirties until 1845 when he came to New Hope and opened a cooper shop at the extreme west end of the Hamlet, on the south side of the front road to Galt, in a building which many will remember as the "Log Cabin".

Here Mr. Roos made both types of barrels, the flour barrels for some of the mills around, and tight barrels for some of the numerous distilleries then to be found hereabouts.

Richard Gowling worked for him making loose barrels from 1866 till 1887 and his son, Nelson, worked with him in 1866 and 1867 and another son, Richard Gowling Jr., in 1867.

Mr. Roos taught the coopering to Conrad Sachs, whose brother, John, was married to a daughter of Mr. Roos. My first record of Conrad is July 19th, 1854, the last, 1862, when he appears to have gone to Buffalo where some of his descendents still reside. As my record comes from Hespeler's books it looks as if Conrad first learned the trade with Mr. Roos and then went to work in Hespeler's Cooperage.

Mr. Roos Sr. taught both trades to his son, Jacob Roos, who appears to have taken over the shop about 1871 and he continued to operate it until he died in 1907.

He made chiefly flour barrels which he delivered with a one-horse waggon fitted with a rack which held 65 barrels. Old timers will remember seeing these loads of barrels passing along Queen Street on the way to Kribs' Mill.

Another son, Edward Roos, learned Coopering with his father and apparently upon completion of his apprenticeship which must have included the tight barrel making he went in 1871 (when young Jake took over the shop) to work for Mr. Hespeler where he remained till 1876. Mr. Ed. Sachs, born 1868, nephew of Edward Roos, told me his Uncle Ed. was in charge of the shop for Hespeler.

Mr. Hespeler's Cooper Shop was in the stone building, which with additions made subsequently, is now The Hydro-Electric Power Station.
