    Notes:

The many friends of James Howlett, of Winterbourne, a gentleman well and favorably known not only in Elmira where he was born and reared but also throughout the township of Woolwich and the County of Waterloo, in the respective councils he had served as a member for a number of years, will regret to hear of his demise. He died at his residence last Wednesday of heart disease after having suffered there from occasionally for several years. As a public man deceased was highly respected and his honorable precepts were appreciated. As a citizen he enjoyed the respect of the community. He was a successful farmer and stock breeder and had acquired a fine homestead. He was the second son of the late Wm. Howlett and was raised on the farm now occupied by Mr. Aaron A. Weber, one mile east of Elmira. He had reached the age of 59 years and 2 months and leaves a widow two sons and one daughter to mourn the loss of a kind husband and provident father. The funeral which was largely attended took place last Saturday afternoon when his remains were interred in the Elmira Cemetery.

The funeral was held on Saturday afternoon from his late residence to the Congregational Church and thence to the Elmira cemetery for interment. He leaves to mourn his loss a widow, two daugters and one son. Wesley, Salome at home and Clara (Mrs. R. Hamilton) of Essex, Ont. ________________

    Jacob Shoemaker.

This aged citizen is a familiar figure here daily as he now lives a retired life with his daughter, Mrs. David B Letson. Mr. Shoemaker has experienced the vicissitudes incident to pioneer life. He commenced married life in bush in 1849 with Miss Veronica, daughter of the late Benjamin Snider. At that time he was in the twenty-fifth year of his age. They had seven children born to them, six of whom are still living. The mother died October 18, 1895. The father of the subject of this sketch was the late John D. Shoemaker, of near Breslau, who was born in Montgomery county, Pennsylvania, in 1800 lacking two months of being ninety-five years of age. The wife of the latter was also born in Montgomery county, Pa., the year of her birth being 1823, and her death occurred about twenty years ago. Mr. Shoemaker, the subject of this sketch, is enjoying life in his declining years, being amply provided for in this particular by the proceeds of his farm, lot No. 129, consisting of 150 acres, near the village.

    Notes:

After several years of great suffering there died last Monday at the residence of her son-in-law, Mr. Thos. Sherrington, Mrs. Mary Ann Howlett relict of the late John [should read William] Howlett, who was one of the oldest settlers of the Township of Woolwich. Deceased was a faithful helpmeet to her husband in the days of the trials of his pioneer life. Together they built up a fine farm home about a mile east of Elmira and furnished it with all the necessary appointments. They raised a large family of children and left them in comfortable circumstances. After the death of her husband, Mrs. Howlett removed to Elmira where she lived in a house of her own on Church St., for many years. When her disease which resulted in the loss of her feet by gangrene, had assumed desperate character, she was removed to the Galt Hospital in hopes that treatment there would prove more effective. It proved, however, that such should not be the case. Then she was brought back to the home of her daughter, Mrs. T. Sherrington, where everything that duty and love could suggest was done for her until death relieved her of her sufferings.

Deceased was known as a highly respectable lady. She leaves nine children - 7 daughters and 2 sons. They are as follows: - Mrs. G. Glennie, Dauphin, Man., Mrs. G. Auman, Mrs. J.E. Bowman, Mrs. Thos. Sherrington and Mrs. Ph. Lein of Elmira; Mrs. Bracey, of Winterbourne; Mrs. T. McCutcheon, of Chicago, Mr. John Hewlett, of Lakefield, Man., and Mr. Jas. Howlett, of Winterbourne, Reeve of Woolwich Township.

The funeral took place yesterday afternoon and was largely attended by relatives and friends.
