Ethel was born in St. Jacobs on January 4, 1907 a daughter of the late Isaiah Brubaker and Hannah Cress. She was married in June 1934 to her late husband George W. Roberts (1968). She was predeceased by her sisters Pearl Reynolds, Kathleen Foster and Gladys Rueter. Ethel was the loved mother of Sandra and her husband Douglas Lang of Waterloo and Jim Roberts and his wife Kathleen of Saskatoon. She was the proud grandma of Jefferey Lang and his wife Monika of Burlington, Jason Lang and his wife Christine of Waterloo, Ian Lang and Erin O'Leary of Owen Sound, John Roberts of Saskatoon and Lisa Perahudoff and her husband Murray of Saskatoon. She enjoyed visits with her great-grandchildren Nathan, Alexander, Nicholas and Kirstin Lang of Burlington and Wesley and Emily Perahudoff of Saskatoon. She will be fondly remembered by her nieces and nephews and her best friend Catherine Ernst of Kitchener. Ethel was the oldest member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Kitchener. Friends and relatives are invited to share their memories of Ethel with her family at the Edward R. Good Funeral Home, 171 King Street South in Waterloo on Friday, October 24, 2003 from 12 noon to 1 p.m. The funeral service will be held in the funeral home chapel on Friday at 1 p.m. A reception will follow. BRUBACHER BROS.

In the general carriage and wagon industry and blacksmithing business the inhabitants of St Jacobs and vicinity are certainly to be congratulated in being in advance of the large majority of villages. In Brubacher Bros, they have a firm who carry on the business in its entirety under one roof and management, which must have many advantages for building road vehicles properly or repairing the same hurriedly, over the old custom where the wagon maker exchanges his woodwork for iron work with some blacksmith or the blacksmith his iron work with some wagon maker for his wood work, often at a distance from their respective places of business and not unfrequently in another village, which I find in my travels over the country a practice even in much larger places than St. Jacobs. On Feb. 27th, 1889, Mr. Daniel Brubacher, father of the above gentlemen, who had for over 20 years carried on very successful carriage and blacksmithing business on the Heidelberg road about two miles south-west of St. Jacobs, retired favor of his sons A. B. Brubacher woodworker and I. B. Brubacher blacksmith. The father now lives comfortably on his farm near here. The sons immediately formed themselves general partnership and removed to St. Jacobs where they built and equipped their present large brick shop, as well as two comfortable brick residences for themselves. By putting in work of first-class quality only they have maintained the good reputation enjoyed by the father predecessor, for building durable, well finished and easy running vehicles, and have built up a good trade not only in new work but in general jobbing and horse shoeing, having customery from a considerable distance. These gentlemen carry instantly from 10,000 to 13,000 feet of lumber the rough state and have at present 1,000 feet of oak wagon tongues alone. So it will be seen that they are in position use only thoroughly seasoned timber. They also carry a good stock of the rims, etc., as well full stock of oak material for wagon wheels and a fall line of blacksmith shop supplies, brimming goods, paints, varnishes, etc., which is absolutely insure first-class work. In the manufacturing of cutters they do some fine work to durability and finish, and have a of beauties on hand. I would advise those contemplating buying anything in their line of business to give them a call. They report business very brisk, having number of cutters and sleighs, and have also orders on hand for several buggies etc. to out next spring.

Mr. I Brubacher plays a cornet in the St. Jacobs Band and is a great poultry fancier, having a lot of fine thoroughbred bird's of the barred Plymouth Rock and white Leghorn breeds. Last summer he sold most of his egg production for hatching purposes.

Mr. A. B Brubacher is a J. P, and has the peace of the village to look after and is a general conveyancer. ln this respect he is decidedly the right man in the right place.

ESTEEMED LADY PASSED AWAY

MRS. I. B. BRUBACHER PASSED AWAY LAST FRIDAY - FUNERAL HELD SUNDAY

The death occurred at her home in St. Jacobs on Friday morning, January 5, 1923 of Hannah Cress, beloved wife of Isaiah Brubacher, at the age of 54 years, 10 months and 3 days, after an illness extending over two years. The late Mrs. Brubacher was born in St. Jacobs where she has resided all her life, and was highly esteemed by a wide circle of rela tives and friends, who deeply regret her demise. She is survived by her sorrowing husband, four daughters, Mrs. H. Reynolds of Kitchener, Kathleen, Ethel and Gladys at home, two grand children, her mother, Mrs. Levi Cress four brothers, Noah and John of Kitchener, Henry of Elmira, and Aaron of London, two sisters Mrs. O. J. Smith of St. Jacobs and Mrs. (Rev.) Henrich of New Hamburg. The funeral was held from her late residence on Sunday after noon at 2 o'clock to St. James' Lutheran church for services, thence to the Lutheran cemetery for interment.

The heartfelt sympathy of the community is extended to the bereaved.

Henry Zimmermann, a respected citizen of Waterloo, died Thursday morning at 2: 00 o'clock, after a long illness. He was born July 14, 1837 in Spechbach, Baden, Germany and came to this area in 1845 and settled near Bamberg. He carried on the carriage trade there and opened a business. In 1882 he acquired the Baumann house in Waterloo and in 1890, constructed the Zimmermann house on the same spot. He gained general respect through his pleasantness and honesty. He is survived by a sorrowing widow, a son and 10 daughters, of whom five are married. The burial took place on Saturday afternoon with a large attendance.

This week it becomes my duty to chronicle the death of one of our old settlers in the person of David Brubacher, who was born in the Township of Woolwich on November 6^th, 1836. When about 18 years old he learned the trade of carriage maker, and about 48 years ago he started business on his own account in St. Jacobs, where he continued a very successful business for 7 or 8 years. He then sold out and removed to the place on the Heidelberg road known at that time as "Hollinger's Hotel." The little place contained three residences and a hotel. Here he successfully carried on carriage-making and blacksmithing business for about 23 years, when he sold out to two of his sons, Messrs. Aaron B. and Isaiah Brubacher, who formed a partnership under the name of Brubacher Bros, and removed the business back to St. Jacobs where their father, had first founded it. After that Mr. Brubacher devoted all his time to his two farms on lot 9, Woolwich township until a few years ago he sold one farm to his son, Auson and rented the homestead farm to his son Noah and retired from active work. For the past three years he has been feeling the effects of declining years. Diabetes started its deadly work and becoming acute caused his death in the early morning of July 14^th. He leaves a sorrowing widow and 8 children, all of whom are married but David, the youngest son, telegraph operator at St. Catharines. The others not named above are: Annie (Mrs. David L. Martin), near the old homestead; Barbara, (Mrs. Israel Brubacher,) Elmira; and Catharine, (Mrs. Noah Cressman), head cook at the Berlin-Waterloo hospital. The funeral took place on Sunday and was one of the largest held in this neighborhood for a long time; there were over 100 teams in the funeral procession and probably 100 more at the church. Funeral services were held at the Mennonite church 2 miles northwest of St. Jacobs, Rev'ds Tobias Martin, Joseph Gingrich ad Abr. Brubacher officiating^.

Brubacher. - Katherine Beechy was born Sept. 5, 1841. On July 22, 1860, she was married to David Brubacher. This union was blessed with 9 children, of whom 8 are still living; also 38 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandchild. From early youth she was a member of the Mennonite Church and always attended services when she could, but being subject to attacks of gall stones, there was many a time in the last 10 or 12 years when she could not leave home. She had a very active mind and when not suffering too much, always found great pleasure in reading her Bible and the Gospel Herald. She bore her sufferings patiently, but had no desire to recover from her late illness which was a complication of rheumatism and pneumonia. She died Mar. 20, 1915; aged 73 y. 6 m. 15 d. Her husband preceded her about 10 years. Funeral services March 22, at the Conestoga Church, conducted by Ezra Martin and Tobias Martin. Interment in adjoining cemetery.

Cress. - Levi Cress was born in Waterloo Co., Ont., Feb. 23, 1837; died March 22, 1916; aged 79 y. 28 d. On Dec. 22, 1863, he was married to Mary Geib, living in matrimony over 52 years. He leaves a widow, 4 sons, 3 daughters, 22 grandchildren, and a host of friends and neighbors to mourn his departure. Funeral March 25, conducted by Ezra Martin and Tobias Martin of the Martin Mennonite Church of which deceased was a member.

Levi Cress, whose death was briefly noted in this column last week was born in St. Jacobs where he resided all his lifetime. His father was the late Ephraim Cress and his grandfather the late Simon Cress who was among the first settlers from Pennsylvania in Waterloo County in 1806. Mr. Cress for many years, was engaged in farming on a section of the old homestead, on which his grandfather had settled. He had lived retired for quite a number of years.

Fifty-three years ago the deceased was married to Marian Geib who, with the following seven children, survives him: Noah Cress, Berlin, Henry Cress Elmira, Mrs. 1. B. Brubacher, St. Jacobs; Mrs. (Rev.) W. Hench, Golden Lake; J. G. Cress, Berlin; Mrs. O. J. Smith, St. Jacobs; Aaron Cress, London. There are one brother and two, sisters; they are: Mr. John Cress and Mrs. John B. Wideman, St. Jacobs, and Mrs. Bernhardt Moyer, Berlin.

The cause of death was the infirmity of old age, which, how ever, had not become acute until a week ago Wednesday. Prior to that day, Mr. Cress had shown a remarkable vitality. As was his wont, he was hale and hearty up to the time of the setting in of the fatal affliction. The demise of Mr. Cress means the loss of a splendid type of citizen, whose characteristics included honesty, integrity and kindness. He was a descendant of the good Pennsylvania stock which has been such a big factor in the agricultural and industrial development of the northern sections of the county. Mr. Cress was 79 years and 28 days of age. The deceased was a member of the Old Mennonite faith. The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon at 2.15, from his late residence and to the Mennonite Church, thence to the Lutheran Cemetery for interment.

Former St. Jacobs Lady Passes Away

Mrs. Levil Cress Who Died at Roseville Was Aged 84; Henry Cress is a Son

Mrs. Levi Cress, for many years. a resident of St. Jacobs, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. William Henrich at Roseville. She was in her 84th year. For the past two months the late Mrs. Cress has been in falling health, She was predeceased by her husband 12 years ago, and by a daughter, Mrs. I. B. Brubacher, five years ago. There are surviving two daughters, Mrs. Oscar Smith of St. Basaha William Henrich, of Roseville, and four sons, Noah Cress, of Kitchener; Aaron Cress, of London; J. G. Cress, of Kitchener, and Henry Cress of Elmira. The funeral took place from Roseville on Monday where services were held and thence to St. Jacobs where services were held in the Lutheran church. Interment was made in the St. Jacobs cemetery.
