    St. Clements Roman Catholic Church

The walls and ceiling are covered by the intricate painting of the artist L. Scott Young. Young completed the work in 1948 and tragically died at the age of 38 in 1950 at Kitchener's St. Mary's Hospital following an operation for a ruptured appendix.

ST. CLEMENTS Standing in the St. Clements Roman Catholic Church, Joyce Young is surrounded by her long-lost father.

The historic church, about 20 minutes from Waterloo's downtown, is among numerous in Ontario and beyond painted by her father L. Scott Young and the last church he painted before dying suddenly of complications from a ruptured appendix at 37 when she was just weeks old.

"I've always been in awe of this church," Young said. "It really is a gem."

The art covering the sanctuary, including murals, stencilled walls and columns, statues and faux finishes, took two years to finish by the artist and his assistants from 1948 to 1950.

It's also one of the few churches where her father's brush strokes still adorn the sanctuary. Of the 27 churches in southern Ontario and a few in Thunder Bay he worked on, "only four churches still have work remaining in them."

Not only are the murals still intact in St. Clements, the art was restored in the mid-1990s....
