    Misfortune:
Tattooed labourer William Hawkins left his wife Annie in Hespeler (now Cambridge) to enlist in 1915. Shot in the shoulder, the Scottish-born soldier recovered.

Crossing 'no man's land' at Amiens, Hawkins and his comrades threw themselves into shell holes to dodge hidden German machine guns firing at them from nearby woods.

A grenade fired from an enemy rifle exploded in the hole. Badly wounded, Hawkins lived long enough for his comrades to dress his wounds. Under heavy fire, they could not carry him from the battlefield. He perished in the shell hole, dead at 30.
