    James L . Sweet

    James Leslie Sweet of Cambridge, passed away at the Cambridge Memorial Hospital on Saturday, June 28, 1997. He was in his 90th year. Jim was a longtime active amateur radio operator #VE3AAI; a dedicated Shriner; and active in the Masonic Lodge #257. Beloved husband of the late Frances Belle (nee Smith) (1977). Dear father of Pauline and her husband Bill Burt of North Bay, Glenn and his wife Lynn Sweet and James Sweet all of Ayr. Loving grandfather of Leslie and husband Bob Manary, Andrew, Eric and wife Jen, Karen and husband Ron Nogiec and Gina; four great-grandchildren, Meghan, Douglas, Ryan and Jordan. Also survived by Harry Culelland and Osborne Sim. Predeceased by a granddaughter, Shelley (1985). Rested at Coutts and Son Funeral Home, Cambridge were funeral service will be conducted in the funeral home chapel today (Wednesday) at 1.30 p.m. with Rev. John Deyarmond officiating.     E. C. Smith Passes - Edward Carlton Smith, RR 3 Ayr, passed away in Willett Hospital, Paris on Monday. He was in his 91st year. A son of the late John A. Smith and the late Isabelle Marshall, the deceased was born and lived all his life at RR 3, Ayr. He was a member of the Glen Morris United Church. Surviving are his wife, the former Margaret Rose; three daughters, Mrs. James (Frances) Sweet, Galt, Mrs. Alex (Marion) Sutherland, RR 2, Paris and Mrs. Charles (Leatha) McArthur, RR 2, Galt; a son E. J. (Ward) Smith of R R3,Ayr ; ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. One sister predeceased him. Funeral service was held from Coutts and Son Funeral Home, Galt today (Wed.) at 3: 30 p.m. Rev. Dr. D. J. Mathers conducted the service. Interment in Ayr Cemetery.

    Mrs. E. Carl Smith Passes - Funeral service was held for Mrs. E. Carl Smith, RR 3, Ayr, on Friday at Coutts and Son Funeral Home, Galt. She died last Tuesday in Willett Hospital, Paris. Mrs. Smith, the former Margaret Ross, was in her 88th year. She was a lifelong resident of the Ayr district. She was predeceased by her husband, E. Carl, and is survived by daughters Mrs. James (Frances) Sweet of Cambridge (Galt), Mrs. Alex (Marion) Sutherland, RR 2 Paris and Mrs. Charles (Leatha) McArthur, RR 2, Cambridge (Galt); one son, Edward J. of RR 3, Ayr; 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Rev. S. Mathers of Glen Morris officiated for the funeral service. Interment in Ayr Cemetery.

    John Alexander Smith - Lifelong Resident of Glenmorris District Called by Death - the death occurred in Glenmorris on Thursday, April 29th, of John A. Smith in his 78th year, after a brief illness. He was a continuous resident of this district, where he was engaged in farming. About 6 years ago he retired to the village of Glenmorris. Mr. Smith was a man of exemplary character, of quiet disposition and was held in high esteem by a large number of friends. He took an active part in church work and was a member of the Session of the Glenmorris church for over 40 years. He was married 48 years ago to Isabella Marshall who, with on daughter, Mrs. Robert Guthrie, Paris Plains, and one son, Edward C., on the home farm, survive; also one sister, Mrs. Wilson, Winnipeg, and one brother, William, Brantford. The funeral took place on Saturday, Mary 1st, to the Ayr Cemetery and was largely attended by friends and acquaintances. Rev. J. H. Davies, pastor of the Glenmorris church, conducted the services. The pallbearers were nephews of the deceased, viz.: Messrs. Alvin Marshall, Ernest Cochrane, J. Marshall Gillies, Sherman smith, John Murray and Earl Sharp.

    Died in South Dumfries, on Thursday, September 22, 1932, at 5.30 p. m., Isabella Marshall widow of the late John A. Smith, in her 76th year. The funeral will take place from the residence of her son, E. C. Smith, Lot 23 Con. 6, South Dumfries, on Saturday, Sept. 24th, with service at the house at 2 p. m. Interment in Ayr Cemetery. Friends and acquaintances will please accept this intimation.

    Mrs. John A. Smith - The death occurred at the home of her son, E. C. Smith, near Glenmorris, on Thursday, Sept. 22nd, of Isabella Marshall, widow of the late John A. Smith, in her 76th year, following an illness of six months. Deceased, who was a daughter of the late Peter Marshall, one of the pioneers of this section, was born on the farm now occupied by Clifford Faus, and had always resided in South Dumfries township. After her marriage, over 50 years ago, she went to reside with her husband on the farm now occupied by her son, E. C. Smith, Glenmorris, where she remained for the balance of her lifetime, outside of a few years spent in Glenmorris. Deceased was a former member of Stanley Street Church here, but latterly had attended the Glenmorris United Church. She was a lady of many excellent qualities and was highly esteemed by numerous friends and neighbors. Surviving are one son and one daughter, her husband having predeceased her some six years ago: E. C. Smith, on the old homestead, and Mrs. Robert Guthrie, Paris Plains. The following sisters and brother also survive: Mrs. James Murray and Mrs. Robert Cochrane, south of Ayr; Mrs. T. A. Gillies, South Dumfries, and Anthony J. Marshall, Lee Cross, Sask. There was a large attendance at the funeral, which took place to the Ayr Cemetery on Saturday afternoon. The services were conducted by Rev. Mr. Somerville, pastor of Glenmorris United Church, while the pallbearers were the following six nephews: Sherman Smith, Ernest Cochrane, Marshall Gillies, Morton Guthrie, Erie Sharp and Allan Pringle, Dunnville.
