WILLIAM BENHAM DIED ON SUNDAY

Victim of Accident during Snowstorm in January.

William Charles Benham, 116 Victoria Avenue, well known Main Street business man and popular musician, died yesterday as a result of injuries sustained when struck by a car about six weeks ago. While crossing Main Street near the Royal Bank to catch a bus on the evening of January 31, Mr. Benham walked into the side of a car driven by Herbert J. Stoops, 20 Rosemary Avenue, Toronto. The car had stopped for the red light at Ainslie Street and was starting off again slowly when the accident occurred. Mr. Benham, it was said, was shielding his face from a snowstorm and did not see the car. Apparently the door handle of the car struck his face, inflicting a compound fracture to the sinus.

Hope Was Held.

Mr. Benham was taken to the Galt hospital for treatment and for a time strong hope was held for his recovery. However, complications developed and two weeks ago yesterday he was removed to Toronto General hospital where he underwent a critical operation on March 6. It was only on Friday of last week that he was brought home from Toronto. Coroner Dr. J.H. Radford announced that no inquest would be held. A post-mortem examination was held yesterday which revealed, it was said, that death was due to an abscess of the Brain.

The late Mr. Benham was in his 46^th year. He was born in London, England, and on coming to Canada lived first at London for a few years and later for a short time at Brantford before coming to Galt 22 years ago. Mr. Benham was an expert candymaker and had been connected with Palmer's confectionary store ever since he came to this city. For the past seven years he has been a partner in the ownership of the Palmer business.

In Musical Circles.

Few musicians in Galt were more widely known than William Benham. For years he played in the orchestra at the old Scott's opera house. He was in frequent demand as an entertainer at social gatherings and was generous in donating his talent for worthy causes. Latterly Mr. Benham had been a valued member of the recently formed Galt Symphony Orchestra, in which he played the tympani. Before coming to Galt he also played in the 7^th Regimental band at London, Ont.

Mr. Benham was a member of Alma lodge, A., F. & A. M., and was of the Presbyterian faith. Surviving are, his wife (Mabel Hays), on son, Leslie, at home; two brothers, Henry, 22 Grand Avenue South, and James of London, England; and two sisters, Mrs. C. W. Boyer and Mrs. B. Wells, also of London, England.
The remains of the late Mr. Benham are resting at Gray Brothers' Funeral Home, 123 St. Andrews Street, until Tuesday morning. The funeral service will be held on Wednesday afternoon at 2: 30 from the residence to Mount View cemetery.
