A few of the males fled to Holland and Switzerland for safety.) progenitor of the Levans of this county, was a native of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, where he was born in May, 1800. When pretty well advanced in his "teens" he commenced the life of a copper-smith, and after having served his apprenticeship of three years he was engaged in Skippack, Pottstown, and other places in Montgomery County until 1825 when he, in company with others, namely John Hoffman, Michael Eby, Samuel Horst, Mrs. Winger and family, all from Lancaster County, moved to Canada and settled in Waterloo County, Ontario. Mr. Levan located on a tract of land (now part of Berlin) situated opposite the Berlin High School, where he had a shop erected and commenced working on at his trade. (In going through the county one meets with a number of old copper kettles (in possession of the children of our pioneer settlers) made by Mr. Levan. Besides being a copper-smith, Mr. Levan also manufactured a number of door locks and latches which are still in use in our old houses and are yet almost as good as new.) He was united in marriage with Julia Sauers and after leaving Berlin they resided in different parts of the county where he worked at his trade until he was an old man. He died in Plattsville, Ontario, in November, 1877, and she died in Preston in 1885, aged 81 years. To them was born a large family"

John Master, "the eldest son of Isaac and Mary (Clemens) Master, was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania, March 7th, 1810. He came to Canada with his parents when nine years of age. On October 30th, 1830, he was married to Nancy Stauffer who was born August 4th, 1811, and died May 13th, 1843. After her decease he was married to Catharine Reichert, April 30th, 1844. She was born in this county, May 15th, 1811. After his marriage he resided on a farm near that of his father's where he remained several years. Being persuaded by some parties to quit the life of an husbandman and begin that of an inn-keeper, he left the farm now in possession of James Cowan and moved to Dundas where he took possession of the old hotel known as 'Peter Bomberger's', a great resort for travellers from all parts of the northern and western counties. But being brought up to the business of agriculture he soon became so disgusted with the life of 'innkeeping' that after the short stay of six months he disposed of his business in Dundas and returned to Waterloo, the county of his adoption. After his return he settled in Wilmot Township, several miles west of New Dundee, on the farm now in possession of John Master, his grandson. From here he moved to Plattsville, Oxford County, where he resided until 1891, thence to Berlin where he and his aged partner are spending the evening of their lives with their son Isaac, ex-M. P. P. Here they have a pleasant home and the loving care of all. To him and his first wife was born a family of six children"
