HOME OF DANIEL D. SNIDER.

On my way from the site of the Black Horse tavern, I halted and spent a few hours at the comfortable home of the well known gentleman above named. It is the old homestead of his father, Samuel Snider, who settled here in 1825. He was born in Franklin County, Pa., in 1801, and. came to Canada with his parents when he was only five years of age. His wife, nee Mary Detweiler, was born Sept. 20, 1806, and died July 4, 1874 She was followed by the father May 15, 1887, aged 86 years and a few days. In a small log caban, south-east of the new residence they lived for many years. Within sight of their humble home on the same farm was an Indian encampment. The aborigines were familiar and frequent callers at their home, and with whom they would barter produce for small farming utensils, etc. Near by was a spring creek that teamed with speckled trout, a feature that evidently encouraged the Indians to remain in the vicinity in preference to other localities. Prior to settling permanently Mr. Snider and family lived on the old Christian Snider homestead near Doon for nine or ten years.

Daniel D., the subject of this sketch, was born here Feb. 26, 1845, and on March 31, 1868, he was married to Miss Elizabeth Bricker, daughter of the venerable Benjamin Bricker. She was born April 7, 1847. They had six children and now live a retired life in a fine residence on the old farm overlooking the village of Roseville. The farm, lots 36 and 37, 11th concession, North Dumfries, contains 172 acres.

Mr. Albert Becker, the son-in law, who married the eldest daughter, Elizabeth, purchased the farm some time ago. He is an industrious and practical young farmer. At the time of my visit he had on hand about 52 head of cattle and 50 hogs, and in both classes there are quite a number of fine animals. Last year, Mr. Becker produced 1,500 bushels of wheat and 1.800 bushels of other grain. He has also all the necessary machinery for grinding and cutting feed. In his horse stable 1 noticed two fine sorrels of Norval blood. One of them, Nelly, has quite a thrilling history. About A year ago Detective Ross, of the C. P.R, attempted to capture a burglar who came into Ayr riding behind the tender of an engine. In the scuffle, the barglar proved more than a match for the detective and escaped after exchanging compliments with the latter in the way of shots. The burglar remained in hiding until some time in the night, when he entered Mr. Becker's stable, took Nelly, and made good his escape. In the morning, when the absence of the mare was discovered, the telephone and telegraph lines were kept busy, but no trace of the animal could be obtained. Constable Klippert was engaged, advertisements inserted in the local papers and the Toronto Globe, and other means used to get a clue of the missing animal, but they appeared to be of no avail. Six weeks had elapsed when word was received from a man at Omemee who had noticed the advertisement in the Globe, stating that a mare answering the description of Nelly had been left in pasture with a farmer in that vicinity by a stranger. The latter had agreed to return in six weeks for the animal. Mr. Becker at once went to Omemee, and sure enough found his property, which he succeeded in bringing safely home after a journey of one hundred and fifty miles. He reached Omemee only a day before the time the burglar agreed to return and get the mare. Nelly, however, seems none the worse for her rough experience, but her value has been somewhat increased, it requiring an expenditure of about thirty dollars for telephoning, telegraphing, etc., before she was brought home again. Mr. Becker has several other fine horses in his stable.

Bricker.- On the 13th of April, 1907, at his residence, near Roseville, Waterloo Co., Ont., of paralysis, Bro. Benjamin Bricker, aged 81 Y., 3 M., 25 D. He was the oldest of a family of 18 children, and lived all his life within half a mile of where he was born. He was married to Esther Bechtel July 1, 1846. The union was blessed with eight sons and five daughters, of whom two sons preceded him in death. The rest, with their aged widowed mother, and many grandchildren and other relatives are left to mourn the loss of one whom they cherished. Bro. Bricker was a faithful member of the church and enjoyed the confidence and esteem of all in his community. May God comfort the bereaved family.

ROSEVILLE PIONEER PASSES
BENJAMIN BRICKER, AGED 81, FALLS VICTIM TO PARALYSIS
SURVIVED BY FAMILY OF ELEVEN.

Another of the pioneers of the Township passed away to-day when Mr. Benjamin Bricker, of Roseville succumbed to a severe paralytic stroke sustained a week ago. He passed away at 5.15 this morning in his 82nd year. He was a native of this County, being born within half a mile of where for many years he has had his home and where he died. He followed farming until six or seven years ago. He was a successful yeoman and had laid up a snug competency. He was a faithful member of the Old Mennonite denomination and a man whose word was honesty itself.

He is survived by a widow and a family of eleven, as follows; Mrs. D. Snyder, Roseville; Mrs. A. Bricker, Yale, Mich., Mrs. Kraft, Roseville; Mrs. Detweiler, Wolverton; Amos, Berlin; Elijah and George at Yale; Mrs. Cassell, Hamburg; Noah, Menno and John at Roseville.
The funeral will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the house.

RAILWAY CROSSING A DEATH- TRAP.

Benjamin Bricker, of Roseville, and his grand-daughter, Miss Maud Bricker, narrowly escaped an awful death Wednesday morning, driving across the C.P.R. tracks on the Roseville Road, west of the Galt cemetery by being struck by the 10.23 express, going east. As it was, the rear end of the waggon was struck, and Mr. Bricker was violently hurled to the road, the wagon smashed into kindling wood, and the horse ran away. Miss Bricker escaped injury by jumping, but the extent of Mr. Bricker's injuries are not known. Immediately after the accident the train was brought to a standstill, and Mr. and Miss Bricker were taken to the station in the train, and Dr. Hawk was summoned. The doctor ordered Mr. Bricker removed to the hospital, but before he had an opportunity to examine him. a message was received from Roseville, asking that he be taken home. The ambulance conveyed him thence.

The Galt Reformer says that the crossing where the accident occurred is a veritable death trap, and that It was nothing short of a miracle that Mr. and Miss Bricker were not killed.

Bricker.-- Esther (Bechtel) Bricker, wife of Benjamin Bricker, died on Thursday, Dec. 30, 1909, at Roseville, Ont. She was born in Bucks Co., Pa., and came to Canada when four years old. In 1836 she was married to Benjamin, and died in the same room in which she was married. She leaves six sons and five daughters to mourn her death. Funeral was conducted by N. S. Stauffer and S. Gehman.

61st WEDDING ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATED AT ROSEVILLE

ELEVEN CHILDREN MEET WITH AGED PARENTS.

A unique birthday party was celebrated on New Year's day at Roseville, when Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Bricker celebrated the 61st anniversary of their wedding day. The event was marked by a reunion of all the eleven sons and daughters, viz:- Mrs. Daniel Snyder of Roseville; George and Elijah and Mrs. Abram Bricker of Yale, Mich.; Mrs. Groff, Mrs. Detweiler, Noah, Menno and John of Roseville; Mrs. Cassel of New Hamburg and Amos Bricker of Berlin. The oldest of the children is Mrs. Snyder of Roseville, who is 60 years of age.

John, the youngest is 37. It is 46 years since a member of the family has been removed by death. Needless to say the day was one of peaceful enjoyment to both parents and children, who spent the hours in a social way. Mr. Cassel made an appropriate address, extending congratulations to the aged couple.

Christian Schenider, "was born August 28th, 1758. In 1789 he was married to Elizabeth, daughter of Christian and Maria (Scherch) Erb (See No. 2777). She was born in Warwick Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, January 23rd, 1770, and died in Waterloo County, Ontario, September 29th, 1818. In 1806 they, in company with others, emigrated to Canada and settled in Waterloo County, Ontario, near where now is the village of Doon. Here he resided for a number of years. It was his intention to construct a dam across the creek flowing through his plantation and have a grist mill erected thereon. But in order to have the desired "head of water" he found that the "back water" would flood a few acres of Mr. Biehn's swamp adjoining that of his (Mr. Schneider's) property, This, although worth nothing, or comparatively little, Mr. Biehn would not sell to Mr. Schneider and thus prevented the building of a grist mill. Mr. Schneider died August 6th, 1850, leaving a family of eleven children"

Jacob Detweiler," second son of Jacob and Mary (Funk) Detweiler, was a native of Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, where he was born November 25th, 1778. On December 15th, 1803, he was married to Susannah Rosenberger who was born in the same county as Mr. Detweiler, January 15th, 1781. When a young man he was called to the ministry of the Mennonite body, but when the Funkite question was brought up he would not give his decision in favor of either party. However, after his coming to Canada he was an active worker in behalf of the Mennonite church until his death. In 1822 they, with others, moved to Canada and settled in North Dumfries Township, Waterloo County, a little west of Roseville, on the farm now possessed by their grand-son, Aaron B. Detweiler. Here they resided until their deaths. She died September 9th, 1847, and he died August 8th, 1858. To them was born a family of ten children"

I Will and ordain that all the residue of my estate shall be divided into nine equal shares or portions and that my sons and daughters shall have each a share, and that the children of my deceased daughters Elizabeth and Nancy have one share each which has to be distributed equally amongst them, but the shares of those who are under age to remain in the hands of the Executors on interest to be delivered over to them when they arrive at the years of majority. Notes:

John Bricker," the fifth son of John and Annie Bricker, was born February 15th, 1805. He was first married to Elizabeth, daughter of Jacob and Polly (Detweiler) Rosenberger. She was born April 7th, 1806. After their marriage they moved on a farm a little east of Roseville, Ontario, where she died of cholera, August 2nd, 1834. After her decease Mr. Bricker was married to Susannah, daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth (Wagner) Bergey. She was born December 14th, 1814 and died February 7th, 1888. He died May 20th, 1871. His family consisted of eighteen children, five of which were born unto his first wife and thirteen to the second wife

On the 20th of May, in Dumfries township, Waterloo county, Ont., John Bricker, aged 66 years, 2 months and 5 days. He was buried on the 23rd at Carlisle. Funeral discourses by Enoch Detweiler and John McNelly. His death occurred suddenly. His Son came home late at night with a team, and he was holding the horses by the head until his son would get a lamp, but before the Son had reached the house, the horses ran away, an he was found lying on the ground near the place where the horses started, and soon expired.

George B. Bechtel "was born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, near Pottstown, May 24th, 1777. On November 16th, he was married to Esther Livergood. They resided on his father's old place near Pottstown, Pennsylvania, where she died March 2nd, 1814, leaving a family of four children, namely: V Catharine, V Levi, V George L., and V Isaiah L.. After the decease of his first wife he was married to Maria, daughter of Jacob and Mary (Tyson) Shoemaker, November 25th, 1817. She was born January 21st, 1793, and died in Waterloo County, Ontario, February 6th, 1840. They moved to Canada in 1829, and resided for two years on the farm now possessed by Joseph M. Brubacher, about two miles north of the town of Waterloo. From here they moved on the farm now possessed by Dilman S. Shantz. The second union was blessed with six children, namely: V Noah, V Rudolph, V Abigail, V Leah, V Esther, and V Isabella."
