    Death Of Hugh Paterson

    Assessor and Tax Collector of this Village Passes Suddenly on Monday Morning


    David Hugh Cleghorn Paterson, village tax collector and assessor, died suddenly at his home here at 9 o'clock Monday morning as the result of a heart attack. He had not been in good health for several years but his passing came as a shock to his family and the whole community.

    He was born at Madras, India, the second son of the late David Horn Paterson, and Janet Stillie. His father was in India as a medical missionary of the United Free Church of Scotland. When Mr. Paterson was five years of age the family returned to Scotland. There Mr. Paterson received his education at John Watson College, Edinburgh. He became an accountant and for some years worked on the grain exchange in London, England.

    Coming to Canada in 1908, he lived at Hamilton for three years and then went to Galt, where he remained 15 years.. At Galt he served as an accountant at the Victoria Wheel Works and Malleable Iron Company. He came to Ayr 15 years ago. Mr. Paterson was appointed assessor in 1934 and tax collector in 1935. He was well known in Ayr and district for excellence and thoroughness in his auditing and accounting work.

    Surviving the deceased are: his wife; one daughter, Marian; one son, Roy, of New Liskeard; one brother, Dy Alexander Paterson of Edinburgh, Scotland. The funeral, private, will be held this (Wednesday) afternoon at 3.30 with service at his home and interment in the Ayr Cemetery.

    Mrs. Hugh Paterson Passes


    A former Ayr resident, Mrs. Alice Eleanor Paterson, passed away at her home in Hamilton on Saturday. Born in England, Mrs. Paterson came to Ayr with her husband, the late Hugh Paterson, who was a bookkeeper with the former Hilborn Company here, and later municipal assessor and tax collector. Mrs. Paterson was a music teacher and prominent in Hospital Aid work here. They resided on Hall St., where she continued to live with her daughter following her husband's death in the 1930's. They left for Hamilton 11 years ago. Surviving are a son, D. Roy of New Liskeard; a daughter, Miss Margaret Marion, at home; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Funeral service was held privately at the Little Funeral Home, Galt, on Tuesday with interment in Ayr Cemetery. Rev. R. D. Hosbrugh of Hamilton officiated, assisted by Rev. Parr. Pallbearers were: James Swan, Erie Sharp, Arthur Underwood, G. S. Dalrymple, Adam Wilson, Galt, and Mr. Davison of Hamilton.
