    Notes:

At St. Agatha the church was entirely too small for the Congregation. Under Father Rupert Ebner, S.J., who came here in 1849, the church was enlarged by moving the Sanctuary back and prolonging, the body of the church by one-third. Now the church had nice proportions. The steeple was covered with the old-fashioned tin. Painted immaculately white and with the tin-covered steeple, the church on the high elevation was certainly a beautiful sight, and for years the most beautiful building in the County and far beyond. The writer still remembers with satisfaction with what pleasure and pride, when a boy on his way to church, he admired the stately building on the hill, its tin-covered steeple glistening gloriously in the sunshine as if inviting the faithful for miles around to the service of the Most High. The steeple was crowned with an artistic iron cross made by the genial blacksmith, John D. Miller, of Bridgeport. This cross now adorns the Sisters' burial plot in the cemetery.

    Joseph Strub.

About a half mile east of the village in the home of this venerable and well known citizen now retired to enjoy the fruits of long years of busy toil during which he also has experienced some of the rough side of life. He was born in Alsace, Germany, on August 22nd, 1829. When he was about three years. of age his parents emigrated to Canada, their first abiding place being in Waterloo where they remained a year. That town then only contained D? Snider's store and the mill, from the latter to Hoffman's factory being cedar thicket. The father came to the present site of the home of the subject of this sketch, then a partially unexplored wilderness,it 1833. Here he began a clearing, the first trees felled being used in building a cabin for his family.

The young people of pleasure today will probably think the truth incredible when the writer recounts some of the hardships endured by this worthy pioneer and his wife in their struggle for a home in the woods. The year previous to this the father had been working by the day for Jacob Bricker, the Burkholders and others in Waterloo. During the first year of their struggle for existence in their wilderness home they would rise at three and four o'clock in the morning and walk to Waterloo, put in an honest day's work and then return home in the evening to toil until near midnight among the burning log heaps of the clearing. Frequently during the sugar-making season the mother would take 30 or 40 pounds of sugar upon her head and walk to Waterloo where she would dispose of it for three cents a pound in trade. Such were the early experiences of these patrons of toil, of which there are a number of witnesses at present living in Waterloo. The father died Dec. 27. 1880, aged 77 years, 8 months and 14 days. The mother followed him on July 24, 1891, aged 88 years, 5 months and 14 days. They had only two children, Joseph the subject of this sketch and the late Mrs. Michael Hergott.

Joseph had his first experience for himself after leaving the family circle, as clerk in the store of one William Charlton, a Scotchman, of Waterloo He was then about sixteen years of age and remained about a year. After that he followed school teaching, his first school being at St. Agatha, then in Preston and latterly in Wellesley village. He was married in 1850 to Miss Frederica, daughter of the late Philip Fisher, of near Strasburg, this county. They had eleven children, two bring deceased They also experienced many hardships. After marriage Mr. Strub worked three or four years as a carperter, and then returned to the old home stead where he remained until the death of his father and where he now resides a retired life enjoying with bis wife the fruits of their many years of patient toil and hardships. Their son Eugene is working the farm. The residence is a commodious stone structure and was erected in 1850. The farm contains 108 acres and is a choice tract of land on the Erb's road about six miles west of Berlin.

Mr. Strub was elected a member of the Wilmot Township Council in 1868, which office be held for seven years. For fourteen years he was collector of the township. From both offices he retired with an honorable record. In 1875 he was appointed a Justice of the Peace, an office he still occupies. He was for six years a director of the Wilmot Township Agricultural Society. In his younger days he was a Tory, btt for the past twenty-three or four years he has staunchly espoused the principles of the Reform party. Having been identified with this section both as a farmer and in an official capacity he rests in peace and contentment with the congratulations of a wide circle of friends and acquaintances, forty-five grand-children and two great grand- children.

His amiable wife, who has been his constant helpmate in all his years of toil, was born in Baden, Germany, Oct 11, 1830. Her parents moved to Canada in 1834 and settled between Hamilton and Dundas on a farm upon which was located the well known half way house. In 1844 the family moved to Strasburg where their father died in April 1869, aged 68 years.
