Tibbie Shiels & St Mary's Loch

Tibbie Shiel's Inn is named after a widow, Tibbie Shiel who lived in what was then known as St Mary's Cottage in the late eighteenth and nineteen centuries. Tibbie was initially the servant of James Hogg's parent.

When she was widowed she had to support 6 children and she achieved this by providing board and lodgings in the cottage. Through her personality and determination the Inn became a frequently used stopping point for the literati and famous of that time.

The historic Tibbie Shiels Inn takes its name from Isabella (Tibbie) Shiel, who, after the death of her mole-catcher husband in 1824, began to take lodgers at her small estate cottage to support her family of six. There were 13 beds in what is now the bar and in an attic. Tibbie's kitchen had two double box beds along with a grandfather clock, spinning wheel and a huge open grate with white-washed 'jaws'. Described as a small active woman with a great sense of humour, Tibbie played hostess to many famous men until her death in 1878, in her 96th year. Publisher Robert Chambers, recommended her inn in 'The Picture of Scotland' in 1827. The Ettrick Shepherd, James Hogg, was a regular visitor: she knew the writer all her life, having worked as a girl in his mother's household. Hogg's friend Sir Walter Scott was a regular and it's likely poet William Wordsworth also visited. Meetings with James Hogg at Tibbie's are said to have inspired Christopher North's famous 'Noctes Ambrosianae', in the best known of which he compares Tibbie's with a wren's nest. Legend has it that the morning after one of these nights of feasting, recitations and philosophising, accompanied likely by a few drams, Hogg was heard to call: "Tibbie, bring in the Loch!" Other names appearing in the visitors' books, still existing in the care of Tibbie's descendants, are Robert Louis Stevenson, historian Thomas Carlyle, the angler and poet Thomas Stoddart and future prime minister, William Gladstone.

    Notes:

Death of Mr. James Welsh, Sr., of Waterloo

The death of this very old resident of Waterloo Township appeared in our last issue. Mr. Welsh came from near Jedburg, Selkirkshire, to Canada in 1833 or 1834, and on arriving in this section took a job at chopping for Mr. Puddicombe, of near Haysville. Next taking a contract on the Macadamized road, near Galt, which was then being improved. His companions on the voyage out, Messrs. Thomas and James Dalgleish and himself, subsequently took up the farm which afterwards was the homestead of the late Thomas Marshall, Township Clerk, on which they remained for a short time. After being two years here he returned to the Old County, where he was married in 1836 to Miss Catherine Linton, a sister of the late Walter Linton and Mrs. Henderson, of Galt. He returned to Galt shortly after his marriage and was employed by the late Absalom Shade for some time. He then took up the farm near Orr's Lake subsequently, and now owned by Mr. George Barrie, on which he remained for a year or two, then leaving there and removing on to the farm in Waterloo, where he died, and on which he had lived for forty-six years. For some years Mr. Welsh has retired from any active attempt to farm, but he still resided on the place.

It seems almost incredible, but it is nevertheless the fact that his death was the first break in his family. Married over 53 years ago, his family consisted of two sons and three daughters, who with his widow are all living. Of his sons, James has been for some years farming in Manitoba, while John has lived on and cultivated the homestead in Waterloo. His eldest daughter Margaret, was married to the late John Robson, of North Dumfries, and is living now near Deloraine, Manitoba, the second daughter, Jane, is Mrs. James Brydon, of Puslinch, and the third daughter, Mary Ann, married Mr. Wolf, and now resides near Guelph.

Mr. Welsh was a member of the Presbyterian church, and a regular attendant of Knox church, Ayr, under the ministrations of Rev. John Thomson, between whom and his aged parishioner warm feelings of friendship existed. Mr. Welsh was buried in Ayr new cemetery. And thus one by one, we chronicle the removal from amongst us of the strong armed men who hewed out this country from a wilderness, and built smiling homes, where peace and plenty, honesty and piety, with a generous hospitality, are characteristic.

    Notes:

GEMMILL An accident occurred in West Dumfries on Friday, the 17th ultimo, to Mr. John Gemmill, which we regret to state has terminated fatally. It appears that Mr. Gemmill was returning from Ayr on the afternoon in question with a yoke of oxen attached to a sleigh, and that by some means or other, he must have fallen off the sleigh, and received the injury from which he died. No person was with him at the time, and it was only the arrival of the oxen without Mr. Gemmill that aroused the fears of the family. His brother immediately set out in search of him, and discovered him lying on the side of the road a short distance from Ayr. He was immediately carried home and medical assistance procured, when it was found that his leg was broken in three places, and that he was otherwise injured. It was at one time hoped that his limb might be saved, but unfavourable symptoms set in, and his medical attendants, Drs. McGeorge and Caw, considered that amputation of the leg was the only chance to save his life. This was accordingly performed, but Mr. Gemmill never rallied, and expired on Saturday last. His funeral took place on Monday. Mr. Gemmill was well known in Galt and vicinity and was formerly employed in the foundry of Messrs Lutz and Company.
