    ERNEST HOOTON, 90, PASSES

    One of Ayr's oldest residents and a former businessman, Ernest Hooton passed away on Sunday in hospital at London, where he had been confined for only a short time. Mr. Hooton had celebrated his 90th birthday at his home here June 15.

    Born in Bozeat, Northamptonshire, England, In 1871, Mr. Hooton learned the shoemaking trade from the master craftsmen whose hands produced footwear for many parts of the world.

    He came to Canada with his wife and family in 1911 and was employed as a section hand with the CPR for a number of years. He also spent two years as a member of the Woodstock Fire Department.

    Mr. Hooton subsequently opened a shoe store here, which he successfully operated for 28 years, until his retirement about 12 years ago when he disposed of the business to Albert Upton.

    In former years Mr. Hooton took an active interest in Ayr's municipal government and served a term on council.

    Making good use of his experience as a fireman, Mr. Hooton acted as Ayr's capable fire chief for many years.

    Mr. Hooton was an accomplished musician, specialising on the alto horn. He played this instrument in the Wollaston town band band in his native England for 25 years.

    Since his retirement he had been an ardent gardener and his productive plot was a source of pride to its owner.

    He was Anglican by faith. Surviving are two sons, Reginald of Ayr and Sidney of Brantford; a daughter, Mrs. William Irwin (Norah) of Ayr; several grand-children and great-grandchildren.

    His wife predeceased him in 1958.

    The funeral was held today (Wednesday) from the W. O. Ball Funeral Parlor with service conducted by Rev. C. V. Tomkins of St. Luke's Anglican Church, Brantford.

    Mrs. Ernest Hooton Passes

    Mrs. Ernest Hooton, one of Ayr's oldest residents, died suddenly at her home early Tuesday morning as a result of a heart attack. In her 85th year, Mrs. Hooton had suffered previous attacks which had left her in a condition of ailing health. The former Clara Rebecca Spriggs, she was born in Lavendon, Buckinghamshire, England, and later moved to the shoemaking center of Wollaston in neighboring Northamptonshire. Here she was married in 1897, and when the shoe industry slumped they moved to Canada with their young family in 1911. After living at Blandford Station, Woodstock and Toronto for several years, they returned to Ayr in 1918, where they resided since. One of the happiest moments of her life came on December 26, 1957, when the couple marked their 60th wedding anniversary. Mrs. Hooton was regarded as a fine neighbor and friend by a wide circle of acquaintances in the village. Her interests lay mainly within the household, and in later years spent many happy hours with her great-grandchildren. Surviving, besides her husband, are two sons, Sydney of Brantford and Reginald of Ayr; one daughter, Mrs. William Irwin (Norah) of Ayr; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. The funeral service (private) will be held at the W.O. Ball Funeral Parlor on Thursday, at 2: 30 pm, with interment in Ayr Cemetery.
