    Notes:

John R. Stauffer, "youngest son of Jacob and Fannie (Reesor) Stouffer, and grandson of John Stouffer, was born and raised near Markham Village, York County, Ontario. When a young man he followed farming until 1881. In fall of the same year he came to Berlin where he was engaged in the J. Y. Shantz & Son button factory for several years. After leaving the Shantz button factory, he, in partnership with Mr. Chas. K. Hagedon, commenced to manufacture covered and rim buttons. They were the only manufacturers of this class of buttons in Canada. They dissolved partnership, April 16th, 1895, Mr. Stouffer taking the button business alone. We have copied the following from the Daily Record of Berlin which gives the public an idea of Mr. Stouffer's business qualities and his popularity as a citizen of Berlin: 'For nearly eight years Mr. Stouffer's name has been before the Canadian trade as a manufacturer of covered and rim buttons. During that time he has built up a good trade for special buttons of this kind and has the distinction of being the only manufacturer of this class of buttons in Canada. Of these button lines he is especially proud and with good reason, for he makes covered and rim buttons, which for material, workmanship and finish cannot be excelled, and the goods find a market over the whole dominion, from Halifax to Vancouver. Mr. Stouffer manufactures for the wholesale trade only and from the strong and durable class of goods supplied he is enjoying a large and increasing trade. Personally Mr. Stouffer is popular as a business man and a citizen. He is well posted and has a fund of good common sense and sound business judgment. Being still a comparatively young man he is likely to witness a wide development of the business of which he is proprietor and to meet with good monetary success which the public will unite in wishing him'. On December 30th, 1886, he was married to Anna Maria, daughter of Samuel B. and Rebecca (Fried) Schneider. She was born June 23rd, 1866. They reside on Queen Street West, Berlin, and have a family of two childrenn, namely: Laura and Mabel."

    __________________________

In 1938 two of the older citizens (August R. Lang and Aaron Bricker) still remember when Uncle Sam B. Schneider's barn on the old homestead was struck by lightnlng in June, 1873. At that time the Town had purchased a fire engine, and the fire company was anxious to demonstrate its ability in handling it. Previous to this, the Babcock Fire Extinguisher Go. had sent a large chemical engine with some expert firemen to the town for the purpose of selling it. The agent took his men and the engine to the fire and the two companies became engaged in a wrangle. They finally wound up by turning the hose on one another. Mayor Hoffman, rushed in between the contending parties and received the benefit of the cross streams. He came out a most bedraggled creature but succeeded in restoring peace and order. However, in the meantime the barn was burned down.
