On Oct. 3, 1933, he was married to Mabel Baechler, who survives. Also surviving are one daughter (Reta Wagler), 3 sons (Earl, Verle, and Ray), 10 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, one brother (Lorne), and 2 sisters (Fannie Lichti and Mary Ann Ruby).     BENDER, Mabel - Passed away, surrounded by her family, on Wednesday, March 11, 2009, at her residence, Nithview Community, New Hamburg where she was active in their many programs. She was born 95 years ago in South Easthope Township and was the daughter of the late Christian and Magdelena (Schrag) Baechler. Beloved wife of the late William Bender who predeceased her October 15, 1988. Dear mother of Reta and husband Cecil Wagler, Earl and wife Ferne Bender, Verle and wife Mae Anne Bender, all of New Hamburg. Sadly missed by her 10 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren. Also remembered by her sister-in-law, Mary Ann Ruby of New Hamburg. Mabel was predeceased by her sons, Glenn and Ray; sisters, Catherine and husband Peter Schultz, Veronica and husband Samuel Bender, Sarah and husband Michael Iutzi, Susan and husband Peter Roth; brother, Christian and wife Annie Baechler; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Alma Bender, Fannie and husband David Lichti, Lorne and wife Katie Bender, Isaac Ruby. Mabel was a member at Hillcrest Mennonite Church, New Hamburg where she had been a member of WMSC. She was also a former member of the Haysville Sunshine Club. Family and friends may call at the Mark Jutzi Funeral Home , 291 Huron St., New Hamburg on Saturday March 14, 2009 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. The interment will take place on Sunday, March 15, 2009, at 2 p.m. at 19th Line East Zorra Mennonite Cemetery. A memorial service to celebrate Mabel's life will follow at 3 p.m. at Hillcrest Mennonite Church with Pastor Jan Steckley and Pastor David Driedger officiating. As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made to Nithview Community Mobility Bus Fund, Mennonite Central Committee or the charity of one's choice.

    Bender, David R., son of Jacob and Marie (Ruby) Bender, was born in East Zorra Twp., Ont., Feb. 21, 1878; died at his home near New Hamburg, Ont., Jan. 22, 1961*; aged 84 y. 11 m. 1 d. On Oct. 6,1904, he was married to Barbara Wagler, who died in May, 1945. Sur-viving are 4 children (William, Lorne, Fannie-Mrs. David Lichti, and Mary Ann), one sister (Sarah-Mrs. Joel Schwartzentruber), 15 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren. One daughter preceded him in death. He was a member of the East Zorra A.M. Church, where funeral services were held Jan. 25, in charge of Dale Schumm, Vernon Zehr, and Henry Yantzi.

    Bender.--Barbara, daughter of Nicholas and Veronica (Gascho) Wagler, was born in Wilmot, Waterloo Co., Ont., Feb. 24, 1883*; passed away at Stratford General Hospital, May 15, 1945; aged 63 y. 2 m. 20 d. In early youth she accepted Christ as her Saviour and was received into the Wilmot A.M. Church by her grandfather, Bishop John Gascho. On Oct. 6, 1904, she was joined in holy matrimony to David R. Bender of the East Zorra congregation. She transferred her membership to the East Zorra Church and remained a faithful and consistent member until called to her reward. She leaves her bereaved companion, 2 sons (William and Lorne, both of Wilmot Twp.), 2 daughters (Fannie--Mrs. David Lichti, on the homestead; and Mary Ann, at home), ten grandchildren, one brother (Pre. Menno Wagler, Baden, Ont.), and 2 sisters (Susanna Gingerich, of Baden; and Rebecca--Mrs. John Bender, of Wilmot). One daughter (Alma) and four grandchildren predeceased her. Funeral services were held at the home by Dan Wagler and at the East Zorra A. M. Church by Nelson Litwiller and Daniel Jutzi. Interment was made in the adjoining cemetery.

    Mrs. Christian Baechler

    The grim reaper of death has taken another of our highly esteemed residents of this district when Mrs. Christian Baechler was called to her eternal rest on Tuesday of this week at the age of 64 years, 10 months and 21 days. The late Mrs. Baechler had not been in good health for several months, but a bad cold developed a few weeks ago and finally a paralytic stroke was the cause of her demise. The deceased was a resident of South Easthope for the past thirty-three years and she endeared herself through her Christian qualities in life to a wide circle of friends. She was an ardent and devout adherent of the Amish-Mennonite faith. The late Mrs. Baechler was a daughter of the late Christian Schrag and was born in Wilmot Township where she spent her youth. After her marriage to her now bereaved husband she lived for a few years on a farm on the 15th line of East Zorra and for the past 33 years resided on the farm in South Easthope, where she passed away. There are left to mourn her passing her sorrowing husband, one son and four daughters, besides 16 grandchildren. The children are Christian on the homestead, (Katie) Mrs. Peter Schultz, of Topping, (Veronica), Mrs. Sam Bender and (Susanna) Mrs. Peter Both, New Hamburg, and (Sarah) Mrs. Michael Jutzi, East Zorra. She is also survived by two brothers, Christian Schrag, of Zurich, Daniel Schrag of Leonardville, N. Y., and one sister, Mrs. Peter Both, of Wilmot. The funeral will take place this forenoon from her late home to the 16th line A.-M. church in East Zorra, followed by interment in the 19th line cemetery.

    BAECHLER. - Magdalena (Schrag) Baechler was born in Ontario, Canada; May 1, 1865, died Jan. 21, 1930, at her home in South Easthope, Ont.; aged 64 y. 10 m. 21 d. In her young years she accepted Christ as her Savior, united with the A. M. Church in East Zora, and remained a faithful sister till her death. July 16, 1882, she was united in marriage to Christian Baechler, sharing with him the burdens and joys of life for more than 47 years. They were blest with 11 children, 6 of whom predeceased their mother in their infancy. She leaves her bereaved husband, 1 son, 4 daughters, 16 grandchildren, 1 sister, and 2 brothers.     Bender. - Jacob M. Bender was born at New Hamburg, Ont.; aged 72 y. 1 m. 10 d. He united with the A. M. Church in his early youth and was married to Elizabeth Miller, Oct. 6, 1863, who died May 12, 1864. He was afterwards married to Maria Ruby. To this union were born 4 sons and 8 daughters. He leaves to mourn his departure his aged companion, 4 sons, 6 daughters, 5 brothers, 30 grandchildren. He was ordained deacon in the East Zora congregation in August, 1871. In 1883 he was ordained minister of the Gospel and in 1887 was unanimously chosen and ordained bishop of his home congregation. He faithfully and earnestly administered to the needs of the Church at home and abroad. He performed 136 marriages and baptized 400 converts and took part in almost every funeral service he was present. He was always willing to lend a helping hand wherever asked. Sermon at the house by C. S. Zehr by reading Psa. 90, with a few remarks at the church. C. Kropf read II Tim. 4: 7,8. S. J. Schwartzendruber of Huron Co., Mich., spoke earnestly on II Cor. 5: 1-10. Burial in cemetery adjoining.

    Bender. - Sister Mary Bender was born in Perth Co., Ont., Feb. 10, 1845; died in Oxford Co., Ont., at the home of her son-in-law, John B. Schwartzendruber, Feb. 2, 1916; aged 70 y. 11 m. 2 d. In early youth she united with the East Zorra A. M. Church and remained faithful to the end. She was a daughter of the late Bishop Joseph Rudy. Oct. 11, 1864, she was married to Jacob M. Bender and lived in matrimony 49 y. 9 m. 3 d. To this union were born 4 sons and 8 daughters, 2 daughters having died about 30 years ago. The sons are John, Joseph, Jacob, David; the daughters, Katie, Mary, Christena, Annie, Lydia, Sarah, all living in South Easthope and East Zorra. July 14, 1914, her husband died, and since that time she made her home with Sister Lydia, having lived nearly all her life on the farm owned by her father and at present owned by her son, Pre. Jacob R. Bender. She lived a widow 1 y. 6 m. 19 d. She leaves to mourn her loss 4 sons, 6 daughters, and 35 grandchildren, also 2 brothers and 3 sisters. Funeral from the home of her son Jacob was held on Feb. 6, where she was laid to rest at the side of her husband in the East Zorra A. M. Cemetery. Funeral services by Bro. Dan Jutzi at home and in the meeting house by Bros. D. H. Steinman and Chris. Kropf. Texts II Cor. 4: 13-81 and II Tim. 4: 6-8. A large number of friends were gathered to pay their last tribute to the departed.
