Fifty Years In Business Chas. N. Klinck Passes

IN FAILING HEALTH FOR PAST YEAR PROMINENT CITIZEN PASSES ON FRIDAY LAST

Charles N. Klinck, Elmira Optometrist and Jeweller, was laid to rest on Monday and a large attendance at the funeral of relatives, friends and business associates from the business section, attested to the high esteem in which he was held. The funeral took place from Dreisinger's Funeral Chapel, thence to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, where services were conducted by the pastor, Rev. F. Malinsky.

Taken to the hospital the first week in June, the late Charles N. Klinck was seriously ill, and while hopes were held for his recovery, a poor heart condition saw him fail until the end and death occurred shortly after midnight on Friday, June 23rd. For the past year he had been in poor health and while attending to business on a shortened hour basis, his friends noticed his decline in health quite noticeably in recent months. He was 67 years of age.

Generally well liked and highly respected throughout the community, Mr. Klinck spent all his life in the community, in which he was born. He was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles Klinck, Sr., and was born in Elmira on April 19th, 1877.

For 49 years he practiced optometry in Elmira and enjoyed an enterprising business throughout the long term. He was also a jeweller for a like term. Being of a brilliant mechanical mind, the late Mr. Klinck had the reputation of being able to figure out most mechanical problems which came his way.

In his earlier years he was an electrician for a time, also a car mechanic and sold and serviced some of the first cars in Elmira. He won his greatest recognition in the mechanical windows designed and exhibited each year in the window of his store. The children of the present and of the past will long remember the thrills Mr. Klinck's Christmas scenes gave them over a long period of years. The windows were a marvel of mechanical ingenuity and Santa Claus was the star performer. All characters were endowed with life under the skillful touch of the master mechanic. The late Mr. Klinck spent many long hours planning and executing his mechanical displays but was always well rewarded with the joy brought to children throughout the years each time at Christmas.

A staunch supporter and devout member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, he served for many years on the board of the church and the school. Through his long connection with the church he took an active part in all its activities. He was president of the Fellowship Society and for many years taught in the Sunday School. His devotion to his church and its welfare were paramount considerations at all times, and as he served, he also lived a Christian life.

The late Charles Klinck was a member of the Elmira Board of Trade, the Elmira Community Service Club, president of the Elmira Musical Society for many years, and was organizer and secretary of two Elmira Old Boys' reunions in 1909 and 1923.
He was married on October 16th 1901, to Nettie Ruppel, and from this union were born two sons, Otto of Elmira and Edward C. of Kitchener; two daughters, Miss Laura of Kitchener and (Esther), Mrs. A. H. Borchardt, Fisherville, all of whom survive. Brothers and sisters surviving are George of Elmira, August of Galt, Mrs. J. B. Lein of Kitchener, Mrs. William Heckendorn and Miss Ida Klinck of Elmira. Four brothers and one sister predeceased him.

The remains were laid to rest in Elmira Cemetery on Monday afternoon and the following were pallbearers: Aaron Hoffer, Oscar Weismiller, Oscar Ruppel, Henry Geisel, H.L. Weichel, Ed. Campbell.

Charles — Nettie Marie Louise Ruppel. Nettie (daughter of John H. Ruppel and Caroline Cress) was born 24 Oct 1878, Woolwich Twp., Waterloo Region, Ontario, Canada; died 24 Jan 1955, Elmira, Woolwich Twp., Waterloo Region, Ontario, Canada; was buried , Elmira Union Cemetery, Elmira, Waterloo Region, Ontario, Canada. MRS. C. N. KLINCK

Nettie Marie Louise Klinck, nee Ruppel, who died Monday, was the widow of the late Charles N. Klinck who predeceased her in 1944. She was born in Elmira, Ontario, on October 24, 1878 and was the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John H. Ruppel. She lived her entire life in the town of her birth.

She was a lifelong member of St. Paul's Church, taking an extremely active part in all of its endeavours particularly the ladies' Aid of which she was president for almost twenty years.

She was blessed with an outstanding soprano voice which will long be remembered by her family and many friends. She was soloist in the St. Paul's choir for 55 years having sung in this choir from the time she was twelve years old until her health would no longer permit.

The untimely death of her husband in 1944 and her son Edward in 1945 contributed to the serious break in her health which necessitated a major operation in 1947 from which she never completely recovered. A severe arthritic condition combined shortly after to bring about a gradual decline which resulted in her death.

She was an example and an inspiration to her entire family and large circle of friends and is survived by three children, Laura and Otto of Elmira and Esther, wife of Mr. A. H. Borchardt of Lester Prairie, Minn., with the exception of her sister, Stella, who died in early youth, she is survived by all of her ten brothers and sisters, Percy, Louis, Norman and Lauretta (Mrs. A. Brubacher) of Elmira, Arthur of Kitchener, Lillian (Mrs. M. Herz) of Waterloo, Walter of Preston, Rosetta (Mrs. Rev. O. Lossner) of St. Louis, Mo., Flora (Mrs. B. Schultz) of Decatur, Ind. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be conducted today (Thursday) at 2: 30 pm in St. Paul's Lutheran Church. The body will be removed to the church from the funeral parlor at 1: 30 pm.

    Notes:

VETERAN CITIZEN IS CALLED BY DEATH

Mr. Karl Klinck, Patriarch of Community Lays Down His Task

    WAS SPLENDID TYPE

Came to Canada From Germany When Nineteen Years of Age

Yesterday morning Elmira's veteran citizen, Mr. Karl Klinck, laid down the weapons of battle after having fought the good fight as one of the earliest pioneers of this district for nearly three-quarters of a century. He was the oldest male resident of this town, having just celebrated his eighty-ninth birthday a week ago. His illness was of short duration, as he was seriously ill for only a few days. He had for years been a familiar figure on the streets of Elmira, and his death has caused universal regret.

Mr. Klinck was born in the Palatinate (Rhinish Bavaria), that picturesque province of Germany, which came so near destruction at the end of the great war, just before the armistice was declared in November, 1918. His old home was but a few miles from the place where the cannons uttered their last roars.

After his school days he was apprenticed to the Cabinet Makers' trade in a neighboring town. The reminiscences of Mr. Klinck's apprentice years, as he occasionally related them for the benefit of the younger generation, are interesting. The ways of the world in those days were hard but they were productive of men well able to take care of themselves and men admirably fitted to take up the pioneer life of the new world to which many later emigrated. His duties as an apprentice were to pay a certain amount of money as "Lehrgeld"; to rise at 5 o'clock in the morning; to do certain chores in the shop and house of his master and to work at the bench from six o'clock in the morning until late at night. Breakfast was served at six and consisted of a few buns and a cup of coffee. Then there was nothing to eat before dinner was served. Dinner consisted of meat and soup, which was served so hot that the eating of it was a painful operation.

If an apprentice ever forgot that he had no business in the company of his journeyman fellow workers after hours, he was effectively reminded of his place in society by a thorough boxing of his ears. Under such conditions the life an apprentice was not a "cinch" as the expression now goes. However he grew to be a strong healthy young man of 18 when his apprenticeship ended. Then he entered upon his "Wandershaft," going from place to place working a few weeks in a shop, thus learning methods practiced by other masters.

In 1854, at the age of 19 years, Mr. Klinck emigrated to America. He embarked at Havre, on a sail ship, which required about six weeks to make the voyage and which had the cholera on board. He saw twenty-six of his fellow passengers who had died from the disease placed on a board in a covering of sail cloth, slid into the sea where the monsters of the deep took possession of the bodies before they had time to sink. From New York harbor he came by rail to Berlin (Kitchener) whence he started off on a rainy, muddy autumn day, by foot, to Elmira, where his uncle, the late Henry Christman, kept hotel, in the house which formerly stood where now stands the Steddick House. There were then but few houses in the village. The streets were in a lamentable condition and altogether, the contrast between the country he had left and the wilderness to which he had wandered was not calculated to impress him favorably with his adopted country. Nevertheless, he looked for work and found it with the late Mr. Henry Martin who was the pioneer builder and contractor of this part of the country.

After his marriage 1860, he took up residence on the farm and converted the primitive, stumpy acres into one of the finest and most fertile farms of the district, at the same time following his trade of building and manufacturing furniture, etc. during the winter months. He bought building lots in the village, prepared the material in the winter and erected some fifteen houses and stored [worked?] on them during the summer months, his enterprise helping materially in making Elmira the central place of business in northern Waterloo. He was also identified with many forward movements and his influence could always be found on the side of enterprise and progressiveness. To write a history of his activities would be to write a history of Elmira and the district around it. Briefly he adapted himself to the conditions he met, was an energetic worker, was blessed with good health, took reverses philosophically and while rearing a large family with the assistance of his good wife, he attained easy circumstances, so that he was able to retire from the farm to the village in the year 1903, since which time he was active and busy as formerly though not so severely taxed for production. He possessed many of the sterling qualities of character as well as the high sense of justice and respect for the law which were so instrumental in laying the foundations for the moral solidity of this comparatively new country and which might well be emulated by the present generation. Socially he was genial and considerate and made many friends by whom he will be greatly missed. With few interruptions he enjoyed good health so that he was able to be about and to take a live interest in his surroundings.

Deceased was a member of the Lutheran church and a firm adherent to the excellent precepts of the great Reformer which descended to him through his forefathers of several centuries, before the religious sky of the old land was clouded by the modern theology which precipitated Germany into a maze of doubt and unbelief. He is survived by his eleven children, namely Catherine at home; George, until lately editor of the Elmira Signet, and now engaged in various business enterprises in Elmira; Margaret (Mrs. J.B. Lein); Caroline (Mrs. John H. Miller); Lizzie at home; Charles N., optician; August, mechanical foreman in the Elmira Rubber Factory; Clara (Mrs. Wm. Heckendorn) and Ida at home. Besides these he leaves behind twenty-one grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, and 2 sisters, Mrs. P. Jansen and Mrs. Henry Dunke. These will mourn the loss of a generous, kind-hearted family head who enjoyed their love as well as the respect of the whole community. The funeral will take place on Saturday afternoon at two o'clock from his late residence at 14 Arthur Street. A service will be held at St. Paul's Lutheran church after which interment will take place in the Elmira Union Cemetery.

    ELMIRA

    SHOE, FELT AND WOOLEN WORKS

Among the manufacturing industries of Elmira the above concern must be reckoned one of the most important, as it gives employment to the largest number of wage-earners and many of them expert and skilled mechanics. It is a part of the old Winger & Weaver Woolen factory. The latter, the first indusdry of note in this town, was established in 1856, by Peter Winger and Samuel Weaver who were prominent among the early settlers in this vicinity. They commenced operations in 1856 and continued to run it until 1873, when Mr. Henry Winger, son of the well known member of the firm, took charge and operated it until 1883, and after that in company with his brother, J. B. Winger, until 1895, at which time they added the felt manufactory. It was then operated by J. B. Winger and Amasa Winger for short one year, when in the spring of 1896, a joint stock company was formed and the plant improved and placed on a more extensive scale. The company is made up of some of the leading and most responsible citzens of the town, viz: Henry Winger, J. B. Winger, Amasa Winger, J. P. Lackhardt, Weber & Erb, M. Weichel, J. S. Weichel, Daniel Ratz, Casper Ziegler, David Snider, Chas. Klinck and son George, Henry Mogk and Isaac Hilborn. Board of Directors: A. H Erb, President; Henry Winger, Daniel Ratz, Casper Ziegler and J. P. Luckhardt, John Peel, Treasurer and general manager.

They manufacture both leather and felt goods, and the class of work turned out is equal in style, workmanship, finish and material to that of any other establishment of the kind in Ontario. There is a steady demand for about all the company can manufacture with their present facilities, most of their goods going to the Northwest and the Maritime Provinces. From twenty-five to thirty hands are employed. The factory is equipped with the latest and best improved machinery, and a walk through the building when all hands are at work will convince any person that experienced workmen are employed and that great care is exercised in putting the material together in a way that must produce a popular and durable article. The very latest styles of footwear are turned out. The company still continues the woolen factory and manufactures fine tweeds, flannels blankets and other woolen goods, and are always prepared for custom work.

MRS. CHAS. KLINCK, SR. DIED ON TUESDAY
WAS ONE OF ELMIRA'S OLDEST AND MOST RESPECTED CITIZENS

A resident of Elmira for upward of sixty years, and an honored wife and mother departed this life on Tuesday, January 4, inst., in the person of Mrs. Charles Klinck, Sr. The deceased lady had reached the ripe age of 80 years 3 months and 13 days.

Mrs. Klinck's maiden name was Elizabeth Hollinger. She and Mr. Klinck were married on January 3, 1860, at the then town of Berlin by the Rev. Mr. Bindemann. Her home was in Heidelberg and there the young couple resided for three months before removing to Elmira in April of 1860. On January 3, 1920, they had the rare good fortune of celebrating their diamond wedding, representing sixty years of happy married life. Their children number nine and all of these were able to attend the diamond wedding celebration.

Mr. Klinck, her husband is still in fairly good health, though he has passed his 85th birthday. The names of their surviving children are: Miss Catherine Klinck, who lives at home, Mr. George Klinck, Mrs. John B. Lein, Mr. Charles N. Klinck, Misses Carolline and Lizzie Klinck, living at home, Mr. August Klinck, Mrs. William Heckendorn and Miss Ida, living at home.

All the children and grandchildren with the exception of one granddaughter (Mrs. W.D. Schmidt, of Kitchener) reside in Elmira.
Mr. and Mrs. Klinck's grandchildren number twenty and their great-grandchildren four. Of her father's family, only Mrs. Margaret Wahl of Elmira survives her.

During the first 43 years of their married life, Mr. and Mrs. Klinck lived on the farm opposite the C.P.R. station, adjacent to Elmira, on north Arthur street. When her husband purchased the farm it was in a primitive state. Mrs. Klinck proved a valuable helpmate to him in their task of meeting and overcoming the vicissitudes which beset pioneers in Northern Waterloo. She was a woman of sound Christian principles, possessed considerable strength of character and was a pattern of industry.

In 1903 Mr. and Mrs. Klinck retired to a fine residence on North Arthur street. During those sixty years, Mr. and Mrs. Klinck had lived in only two houses. The one on the farm and the other a quarter of a mile from it on the ?? street.

Mrs. Klinck had for thirty-seen years been a sufferer from rheumatism, and for about seven years she had been unable to leave her home. Shortly before Christmas, she became ill, but it was not until Sunday morning that her condition became serious. She grew gradually weaker and death ended her sufferings on Tuesday.

Her funeral will be held on Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock, from her late residence, proceeding to St. Paul's Lutheran Church for services, after which interment will take place in the Elmira Union Cemetery.

In her death Elmira loses a highly esteemed woman and her husband and family a beloved mother and wife. Hers has been a signally useful, fruitful life. Her departure will be sincerely mourned by all who enjoyed her friendship or acquaintance. The sympathy of the community will go out to the bereaved family. Ruppel, who was the director of the Elmira Band and leader of the "Maennerchor" and St. Paul's Choir for many years. His many other duties as Village Clerk and Conveyancer forced him to resign some of these charges. However, he still holds the position of organist at St. Paul's Church. Mr. Ruppel has been clerk of Elmira ever since incorporation. He has discharged his duties with great ability and a good deal of tact, and has been a very decided help to the council, throughout his term of office. He is the oldest son of Post Master Ruppel, was born and educated in Elmira and has lived here all his life.

Half-Century of Wedded Bliss Nears For Mr. and Mrs. John H. Ruppel

Old Town Official and His Helpmate Receiving Felicitations of Friends and Relatives Upon Occasion of Golden Wedding Anniversary; Career of Mr. Ruppel Indelibly Linked With Progress of Elmira; Lover of Flowers and Music

Throngs of friends, relatives and business associates tomorrow will join Mr. John R. Ruppel and his loving helpmate in observing their 50th year of married life. Truly, this is an anniversary that it is not every couple's good fortune to stage, but when it is linked up with the other records or near records that can be justly claimed deserves more than a casual comment.

In addition to having been married a half-century and boasting a family of 11 children of whom then are still living, Mr. Ruppel has been Elmira's only municipal clerk, filling the post for 40 years without a break. In the last few years he has had added to his responsibilities the duties of town treasurer. Probably no one in Elmira has a more extensive and valuable knowledge of the town and its people than Mr. Ruppel. That he will retain his good health and be able to carry on for many years to come is the sincere trust of his many good friends.

    Father a Pioneer

Mr. Ruppel has lived practically every minute of his life in Elmira and he has seen it grow from a struggling little hamlet to the important place it now occupies. He was born here on May 31, 1857, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Ruppel. The former came here from the old country when Elmira boasted but a few scattered homes and was known as West Woolwich P.O. The father built up a splendid mercantile business and later became postmaster. The son following in the parental footsteps, spent 15 years at the counter, but later was attracted to municipal work and when Elmira was incorporated as a village in 1877 he was appointed to the clerkship.

    Lover of Flowers and Music

Mr. Ruppel finds relaxation in gardening and music. A boyhood chum of the late Dr. Vogt of Mendelsohn Choir fame, Mr. Ruppel still remembers when he was four years old. The Vogt youngster was a year younger and Mr. Ruppel recalls he played the mouth organ while young Vogt danced on the street.

Four 30 years a member of the E. M. S. Band, Mr. Ruppel could play practically any brass instrument, although he majored on the cornet and handled the baton for 19 years. For 38 years he was organist and choirmaster of St. Paul's Lutheran Church.

In addition to his municipal duties, Mr. Ruppel has acted as notary public, conveyance and insurance agent for 40 years.

    Notes:

    POSTMASTER RUPPEL, DEAD

Last Saturday death claimed the oldest citizen of Elmira in the person of Mr. John Ruppel, Postmaster, who up to about a year since was actively engaged in his work although he had, at the time of his death reached the age of 83 years and 17 days. He was a native of Hessen, Germany and came to Elmira from that country in 1852 when 25 years of age.

Here he spent the remainder of his life. During his early manhood he was engaged in the manufacture of potash, later in making brick just west of Elmira on the farm now owned by Mr. Philip Beisel. He manufactured the brick of which St. Pauls Lutheran parsonage, the residences of Mr. Conrad Hahn that of Mrs. Koerber and the Ontario House were built. Soon he engaged as clerk in Mr. Isaac Wenger's Store and became a partner in the business. Later this partnership was dissolved and each of the partners continued business on his own account. Mr. Wenger in the store now occupied by the Otto Estate and Mr. Ruppel in a frame building where now stand the stores of Messrs A. Werner and Jury & Amy. Here he conducted an extensive trade for many years and later removed to Dunke's block where he ended his mercantile career. After the death of Mr. Peter Winger he was appointed Post Master and held the office up to the time of his demise although the infirmities of old age during the last year asserted themselves so strongly that he was unable to give the business his personal attention. During his 60 years' residence here he made many friends. Being of a cheerful native and an obliging disposition he was very popular. He was generous to a fault. Several terms he was a representative in the Woolwich Township Council. He also held other honorary positions. He was one of the original members of St. Pauls Lutheran Congregation which was organized in 1860, and of which he has been a consistent member since. He was married to Maria Huehn, of Heidelberg who survives him. His union was blessed with 11 children, 3 of whom have departed this life. The remaining ones are: Mr. J. H., Elmira Village Clerk, Mrs. (Rev. Borth), of Staten Island, N. Y., Henry of Tavistock, George of Elmira, Charles of Buffalo, N.Y., Otto, of Hamilton, Oscar and Mrs. J. S. Weichel, of Elmira.

Sixty years of residence in the same village, closely connected with the growth of the place and in the years of his prime always identified with the every forward movement; he had made for himself a place in the community which only such privileges would admit one to occupy. He was one of the land marks of the community and will be missed, not only by hi family but also by many others who have been accustomed to associate him with the history of the Village.

He leaves a widow, 8 children, 32 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. The funeral took place on Tuesday and was attended by a large number of friends who had come from far and near to pay their last tribute to his memory.

    JOHN RUPPEL, P M.

In the person of the above named gentleman we have a good representative of that type of men who came over from the Fatherland, and from a humble beginning became citizens of honorable and prominent character, in Canada and especially in Waterloo county. He was born in Eifa, Hesse- Darmstadt, Germany, Nov. 27th 1827, being now in the seventy-first year of his age. He emigrated from his native land to Canada and arrived at Berlin on June 22, 1852, where he found employment in Messrs. Schneider & Schafer's brickyard. Here he worked for several summers, and in the winter time when the brickyard was closed he worked for the farmers in the vicinity, receiving at the rate of five dollars per month for services. On Sept. 7th, 1853, he came to Elmira and secured employment in the old potash factory then operated by Werger & Weaver. While engaged in this capacity he won the confidence of his employers and he was finally promoted to the position of clerk in their general store, a position he held forteen years. In 1862 we find him a partner of Mr. Isaac Wenger in the general mercantile business in the place at present occupied by Henry Dunke & Co. This partnership existed four years when Mr. Ruppel withdrew from the firm and opened out a stock of general merchandise in an old frame building that stood upon the site of the fine brick block that at present contains the post-office, Werner's drug store and his brother Charles's furniture store. He owned and conducted this business until 1886, when he retired from active mercantile life. On Sept. 11 th, 1889, he was appointed Postmaster here, of which office he is still the incumbent, and it can here be truthfully said that no more efficient or accommodating official in this capacity has ever been appointed in the town. Mr. Ruppel was for many years an auctioneer and his services were always in demand in a radius of many miles. He sold the town lots when Isaac Wenger and Joel Good divided up the old Jonas Wenger farm, and made it part of the village. The proceeds of that sale were $8,000. Mr. Ruppel was Deputy-Reeve of the Township of Woolwich one term, and was for three years a member of the village council. He has since declined to run for any municipal office. In 1856 he was married to Miss Maria, daughter of George Huehn, formerly of Wellesley. Eleven children have been born to them. They are as follows: John H, now clerk of the village; Henry, Margaret, Mary Ann, George, Charles, Louis, Willian and Ida. All are living except Louis and William. The former died from small pox in 1872. Those living are all married and prospering. Mr Ruppel has been a life long Conservative, but is liberal in his views and not so selfish minded as to be entirely bind to everything good that the opposite party may accomplish. His long and splendid record as Postmaster is a sufficient guarantee that he will continue to retain his office under the present Administration. He is a member of the Lutheran church and is a public spirited citizen, being always ready to extend liberal aid to anything that he believes will prove beneficial to the village.

Deceased was born in Hessen, Germany, and came to this country in her girlhood. For over sixty years she had made Elmira her home and in those long years she made a wide acquaintanceship and many friends. She was a faithful member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and of its Ladies Aid.

For several years she had been in poor health and a stroke of paralysis brought about her end in a few days. Her husband died about four years ago, and of a dozen children four also predeceased her. The surviving ones are John, George, Oscar, and Mrs. J. S. Weichel in Elmira; Mrs. (Rev.) Borth, of New York; Henry, of Tavistock; Charles, of Buffalo; and Otto of Hamilton. Thirty-seven grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren also survive her.

    Golden Wedding

One of those rather rare family gatherings commonly called golden weddings was held at the home of postmaster Rupple yesterday it being the 50th anniversary of their marriage. Mr. Ruppel was married on the 27th of April, 1956 [sic], to Mary Huehn, daughter of Geo. Huehn, of the neighborhood of Heidelberg. Rev. Wundelich, of Waterloo performed the ceremony, Mr. Ruppel came to Elmira in 1853, and on the 29 April 1856, the birthday of Mrs. Ruppel, he brought the latter to Elmira, where they have resided ever since and where they experienced good days and bad days, sunshine and shadow, in short the many changes that fifty years of life in this work are likely to bring. Through all changes, however, they could feel the wise guidance and merciful providence of God, in whom they put their trust. To Mr. and Mrs. Ruppel was born a family of 11 children, two of whom died young and a third, Mrs. Eix, a few months ago. The children living in the village, also Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ruppel, of Tavistock, and their son-in-law, Rev. S. B. Eix, of Fisherville, met at the old home and had dinner with the aged couple.

Mr. Ruppel is in his 79th year and Mrs. Ruppel will be 69 next Sunday. Both are quite smart, the former doing a hard day's work at the post office daily and the latter performing her household duties. The many fiends of Mr. and Mrs. Ruppel will join with us in wishing them many more years together in good health. - Elmira Advertiser
