    Notes:

    L. A. JEANNERET.

The village is fortunate in having a first class watchmaker and jeweler, and the above named gentleman is that individual. Mr. Jeanneret has been a watchmaker almost from the time he left the cradle in the home of his nativity, Switzerland, the greatest watch manufacturing country of the world. He was born in the hamlt of Sur la Roche, Neuchatel county, Switzerland, on Nov.7, 1861. This hamlet is situated on the summit of a high mountain over looking the picturesque Val de Travers, and from which can be plainly seen the snow capped Alps, a distance of about seventy-two miles. It is the center of the great watch manufacturing industry of that country and the home of the famous Neuchatel cheese. Here, in one of the largest watch manufactories in Switzerland, Mr. Jeanneret commenced to learn his trade when ten years of age. He served six years and during that time he acquired the most thorough knowledge possible for an expert watchmaker and jeweler. At the close of his apprenticeship he concluded to sail for the New World and arrived in Waterloo county when about sixteen years of age. Being in a strange land, and unable to procure a suitable situation at his adopted trade, procured work on a farm and for eight years followed that occupation. For three seasons he went around the country threshing. Being of an economical disposition and not inclined to dissipation be succeeded in becoming able, financially, to start in business for himself and about thirteen years ago he looked upon Elmira as a suitable location for his trade and accordingly set up business in what is now known as the "Curiosity Shop." Being an expert workman and courteous to all who patronized him he gradually built up a lucrative trade, having to-day many of the best citizens of this vicinity as his customers. He does all kinds of repairing, both in watches and jewelry, and also keeps quite a stock of the same on hand for sale.

Mr. Jeanneret was married to Miss Mary, daughter of Mr. Chas. Haac, of Conestogo, in 1883, and at present has two children. He is one of a family of twelve children, all watchmakers. One brother and five sisters are still living in Switzerland. It will be well remembered by many readers of the CHRONICLE that one brother who also came to this county at the time was the victim of a foul murder at Breslau about two years ago. When mentioning this sad incident Mr. Jeanneret evinces considerable emotion and feels satisfied in his own mind as to the identity of the person who committed the deed. Mr. Jeanneret deserves great credit for his success, as in the first three years of his venture in business he had a hard road to hoe, and often found it difficult to make both ends meet. Mr. Jeanneret was also member of the Village Council for a number of years.
