    Notes:

    John H. Ruppel

A gentleman to whom much credit is due as an instructor in music and as a furtherer of its interests in Elmira, is Mr. John H. Ruppel, who was the director of the Elmira Band and leader of the "Maennerchor" and St. Paul's Choir for many years. His many other duties as Village Clerk and Conveyancer forced him to resign some of these charges. However, he still holds the position of organist at St. Paul's Church. Mr. Ruppel has been clerk of Elmira ever since incorporation. He has discharged his duties with great ability and a good deal of tact, and has been a very decided help to the council, throughout his term of office. He is the oldest son of Post Master Ruppel, was born and educated in Elmira and has lived here all his life.

Half-Century of Wedded Bliss Nears For Mr. and Mrs. John H. Ruppel

Old Town Official and His Helpmate Receiving Felicitations of Friends and Relatives Upon Occasion of Golden Wedding Anniversary; Career of Mr. Ruppel Indelibly Linked With Progress of Elmira; Lover of Flowers and Music

Throngs of friends, relatives and business associates tomorrow will join Mr. John R. Ruppel and his loving helpmate in observing their 50th year of married life. Truly, this is an anniversary that it is not every couple's good fortune to stage, but when it is linked up with the other records or near records that can be justly claimed deserves more than a casual comment.

In addition to having been married a half-century and boasting a family of 11 children of whom then are still living, Mr. Ruppel has been Elmira's only municipal clerk, filling the post for 40 years without a break. In the last few years he has had added to his responsibilities the duties of town treasurer. Probably no one in Elmira has a more extensive and valuable knowledge of the town and its people than Mr. Ruppel. That he will retain his good health and be able to carry on for many years to come is the sincere trust of his many good friends.

    Father a Pioneer

Mr. Ruppel has lived practically every minute of his life in Elmira and he has seen it grow from a struggling little hamlet to the important place it now occupies. He was born here on May 31, 1857, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Ruppel. The former came here from the old country when Elmira boasted but a few scattered homes and was known as West Woolwich P.O. The father built up a splendid mercantile business and later became postmaster. The son following in the parental footsteps, spent 15 years at the counter, but later was attracted to municipal work and when Elmira was incorporated as a village in 1877 he was appointed to the clerkship.

    Lover of Flowers and Music

Mr. Ruppel finds relaxation in gardening and music. A boyhood chum of the late Dr. Vogt of Mendelsohn Choir fame, Mr. Ruppel still remembers when he was four years old. The Vogt youngster was a year younger and Mr. Ruppel recalls he played the mouth organ while young Vogt danced on the street.

Four 30 years a member of the E. M. S. Band, Mr. Ruppel could play practically any brass instrument, although he majored on the cornet and handled the baton for 19 years. For 38 years he was organist and choirmaster of St. Paul's Lutheran Church.

In addition to his municipal duties, Mr. Ruppel has acted as notary public, conveyance and insurance agent for 40 years.

    Jacob Eix

With the passing of Jacob Eix on Saturday morning the town lost a well-known and highly respected citizen. Mr. Eix was almost 80 years old and during his residence in Elmira, lasting about a third of a century, his interest in others and his kindly nature made him many warm friends.

He was born in Hawkesville on June 26th, 1853, almost 80 years ago. After his marriage in 1878 he moved to a farm two miles west of St. Jacobs where he lived for seven years. He then moved to the 4th line of Peel where he farmed for thirteen years. Here he met with an accident on the farm of James Bruce. While threshing he slipped on the horse power and was caught in the cogs of the machine, which necessitated the amputation of his leg. He could no longer farm so moved to Elmira, living on Church street for a number of years and later on William St. In all he resided here for 35 years. He suffered many years of illness but through all he carried his cross in a patient and Christian manner.

Surviving are his widow, four daughters, Mrs. C. Percy Ruppel, Mrs. H. W. Zilliax, Mrs. W. Schedewitz, all of Elmira, and Mrs. J. C. Moebus of Kitchener, and one son, Roy J., of Elmira. Three brothers, H. B. Eix of Elmira, Rev. S. B. Eix of Fillmore, N.Y. and Charles B. Eix of Detroit and four sisters, Mrs. Louis Beisel, Mrs. Amos Eby, Mrs. John Ritter of Elmira and Mrs. Jacob Schmetzer of Kitchener, also survive.

The funeral was held on Tuesday afternoon at 2.30 o'clock from his late residence, 8 William St., to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, where the pastor, Rev. F. Malinsky, conducted the funeral service. Burial was made in the Elmira Cemetery.

Six nephews acted as pall-bearers. They were: Charles Ritter, Archie Ritter, Theodore Beisel, Norman Beisel, Allen Eix and Milton Eix.

Among those who attended the funeral were: Mrs. William Duench, Mrs. Kaster, Mrs. Charles Wolfenberg, Mr. W. Derbecker, Mr. Lehnen, Mrs. Westfall, Mr. Robert Israel, Mr. John Israel and Sylvester Israel, Miss Freda and Emma Israel, Mrs. A. Fischer and son Roy, all of Kitchener; Rev. and Mrs. S. B. Eix and Miss Aleda Behrens, of Fillmore, N.Y., and Mrs. James Causland and Mrs. Robert McTaggaret of Winterbourne.

    Notes:

    POSTMASTER RUPPEL, DEAD

Last Saturday death claimed the oldest citizen of Elmira in the person of Mr. John Ruppel, Postmaster, who up to about a year since was actively engaged in his work although he had, at the time of his death reached the age of 83 years and 17 days. He was a native of Hessen, Germany and came to Elmira from that country in 1852 when 25 years of age.

Here he spent the remainder of his life. During his early manhood he was engaged in the manufacture of potash, later in making brick just west of Elmira on the farm now owned by Mr. Philip Beisel. He manufactured the brick of which St. Pauls Lutheran parsonage, the residences of Mr. Conrad Hahn that of Mrs. Koerber and the Ontario House were built. Soon he engaged as clerk in Mr. Isaac Wenger's Store and became a partner in the business. Later this partnership was dissolved and each of the partners continued business on his own account. Mr. Wenger in the store now occupied by the Otto Estate and Mr. Ruppel in a frame building where now stand the stores of Messrs A. Werner and Jury & Amy. Here he conducted an extensive trade for many years and later removed to Dunke's block where he ended his mercantile career. After the death of Mr. Peter Winger he was appointed Post Master and held the office up to the time of his demise although the infirmities of old age during the last year asserted themselves so strongly that he was unable to give the business his personal attention. During his 60 years' residence here he made many friends. Being of a cheerful native and an obliging disposition he was very popular. He was generous to a fault. Several terms he was a representative in the Woolwich Township Council. He also held other honorary positions. He was one of the original members of St. Pauls Lutheran Congregation which was organized in 1860, and of which he has been a consistent member since. He was married to Maria Huehn, of Heidelberg who survives him. His union was blessed with 11 children, 3 of whom have departed this life. The remaining ones are: Mr. J. H., Elmira Village Clerk, Mrs. (Rev. Borth), of Staten Island, N. Y., Henry of Tavistock, George of Elmira, Charles of Buffalo, N.Y., Otto, of Hamilton, Oscar and Mrs. J. S. Weichel, of Elmira.

Sixty years of residence in the same village, closely connected with the growth of the place and in the years of his prime always identified with the every forward movement; he had made for himself a place in the community which only such privileges would admit one to occupy. He was one of the land marks of the community and will be missed, not only by hi family but also by many others who have been accustomed to associate him with the history of the Village.

He leaves a widow, 8 children, 32 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. The funeral took place on Tuesday and was attended by a large number of friends who had come from far and near to pay their last tribute to his memory.

    JOHN RUPPEL, P M.

In the person of the above named gentleman we have a good representative of that type of men who came over from the Fatherland, and from a humble beginning became citizens of honorable and prominent character, in Canada and especially in Waterloo county. He was born in Eifa, Hesse- Darmstadt, Germany, Nov. 27th 1827, being now in the seventy-first year of his age. He emigrated from his native land to Canada and arrived at Berlin on June 22, 1852, where he found employment in Messrs. Schneider & Schafer's brickyard. Here he worked for several summers, and in the winter time when the brickyard was closed he worked for the farmers in the vicinity, receiving at the rate of five dollars per month for services. On Sept. 7th, 1853, he came to Elmira and secured employment in the old potash factory then operated by Werger & Weaver. While engaged in this capacity he won the confidence of his employers and he was finally promoted to the position of clerk in their general store, a position he held forteen years. In 1862 we find him a partner of Mr. Isaac Wenger in the general mercantile business in the place at present occupied by Henry Dunke & Co. This partnership existed four years when Mr. Ruppel withdrew from the firm and opened out a stock of general merchandise in an old frame building that stood upon the site of the fine brick block that at present contains the post-office, Werner's drug store and his brother Charles's furniture store. He owned and conducted this business until 1886, when he retired from active mercantile life. On Sept. 11 th, 1889, he was appointed Postmaster here, of which office he is still the incumbent, and it can here be truthfully said that no more efficient or accommodating official in this capacity has ever been appointed in the town. Mr. Ruppel was for many years an auctioneer and his services were always in demand in a radius of many miles. He sold the town lots when Isaac Wenger and Joel Good divided up the old Jonas Wenger farm, and made it part of the village. The proceeds of that sale were $8,000. Mr. Ruppel was Deputy-Reeve of the Township of Woolwich one term, and was for three years a member of the village council. He has since declined to run for any municipal office. In 1856 he was married to Miss Maria, daughter of George Huehn, formerly of Wellesley. Eleven children have been born to them. They are as follows: John H, now clerk of the village; Henry, Margaret, Mary Ann, George, Charles, Louis, Willian and Ida. All are living except Louis and William. The former died from small pox in 1872. Those living are all married and prospering. Mr Ruppel has been a life long Conservative, but is liberal in his views and not so selfish minded as to be entirely bind to everything good that the opposite party may accomplish. His long and splendid record as Postmaster is a sufficient guarantee that he will continue to retain his office under the present Administration. He is a member of the Lutheran church and is a public spirited citizen, being always ready to extend liberal aid to anything that he believes will prove beneficial to the village.

    Notes:

    MRS. JOHN RUPPEL

On Saturday morning there passed away, Mrs. Mary Ruppel, relict of the late Postmaster Ruppel.

Deceased was born in Hessen, Germany, and came to this country in her girlhood. For over sixty years she had made Elmira her home and in those long years she made a wide acquaintanceship and many friends. She was a faithful member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and of its Ladies Aid.

For several years she had been in poor health and a stroke of paralysis brought about her end in a few days. Her husband died about four years ago, and of a dozen children four also predeceased her. The surviving ones are John, George, Oscar, and Mrs. J. S. Weichel in Elmira; Mrs. (Rev.) Borth, of New York; Henry, of Tavistock; Charles, of Buffalo; and Otto of Hamilton. Thirty-seven grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren also survive her.

The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon and was attended by a large circle of relatives and friends.

    Golden Wedding

One of those rather rare family gatherings commonly called golden weddings was held at the home of postmaster Rupple yesterday it being the 50th anniversary of their marriage. Mr. Ruppel was married on the 27th of April, 1956 [sic], to Mary Huehn, daughter of Geo. Huehn, of the neighborhood of Heidelberg. Rev. Wundelich, of Waterloo performed the ceremony, Mr. Ruppel came to Elmira in 1853, and on the 29 April 1856, the birthday of Mrs. Ruppel, he brought the latter to Elmira, where they have resided ever since and where they experienced good days and bad days, sunshine and shadow, in short the many changes that fifty years of life in this work are likely to bring. Through all changes, however, they could feel the wise guidance and merciful providence of God, in whom they put their trust. To Mr. and Mrs. Ruppel was born a family of 11 children, two of whom died young and a third, Mrs. Eix, a few months ago. The children living in the village, also Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ruppel, of Tavistock, and their son-in-law, Rev. S. B. Eix, of Fisherville, met at the old home and had dinner with the aged couple.

Mr. Ruppel is in his 79th year and Mrs. Ruppel will be 69 next Sunday. Both are quite smart, the former doing a hard day's work at the post office daily and the latter performing her household duties. The many fiends of Mr. and Mrs. Ruppel will join with us in wishing them many more years together in good health. - Elmira Advertiser
