    RAILWAY CROSSING A DEATH- TRAP.

Benjamin Bricker, of Roseville, and his grand-daughter, Miss Maud Bricker, narrowly escaped an awful death Wednesday morning, driving across the C.P.R. tracks on the Roseville Road, west of the Galt cemetery by being struck by the 10.23 express, going east. As it was, the rear end of the waggon was struck, and Mr. Bricker was violently hurled to the road, the wagon smashed into kindling wood, and the horse ran away. Miss Bricker escaped injury by jumping, but the extent of Mr. Bricker's injuries are not known. Immediately after the accident the train was brought to a standstill, and Mr. and Miss Bricker were taken to the station in the train, and Dr. Hawk was summoned. The doctor ordered Mr. Bricker removed to the hospital, but before he had an opportunity to examine him. a message was received from Roseville, asking that he be taken home. The ambulance conveyed him thence.

The Galt Reformer says that the crossing where the accident occurred is a veritable death trap, and that It was nothing short of a miracle that Mr. and Miss Bricker were not killed.

    _____________________

    Death of Mr. James Barton

This well-known resident of Roseville died on Friday morning last after an illness of about a weeks' duration, of congestion of the brain.

There were probably few men more widely known throughout this section than Mr. Barton. When quite a young man, and while his parents resided near this town, on the Mill Creek road, he entered the employ of the late Archibald Henderson in the mill more lately owned by Messrs. Broomfield & McDougall, occupying the position of head sawyer from some years. Finally he established himself in a mill at Roseville. His success there was quite marked, although misfortune overtook him in the burning of his mill and much valuable property without insurance which severely taxed his energies to overcome. But he did overcome them, and at the time of his death had succeeded in establishing not alone a large and flourishing business, but an excellent financial standing. As a business man Mr. Barton was in every sense most trustworthy, and any bargain or contract entered into by him was carried out on his part to the letter. Going to work as young as what he did, his opportunities for education were necessarily limited; but in his business affairs he was most accurate, - surprisingly so to many who dealt with him. He leaves a wife and six children, four girls and two sons, one of his daughters being married to Mr. Clemens, who has been connected with the mill for some years, and his son being book-keeper in his mill. Both his parents are dead.

Mr. Barton was a member of the church of the United Brethren. His funeral took place on Monday morning last, from his residence to the church and cemetery of that denomination just west of the village. The attendance was very large, the church being much crowded and many being compelled to remain outside. Very earnest address were delivered by bishop Sherk, Rev. Mr. Bowman and another Rev. gentleman. After an impressive prayer at the grave, the body was lowered to its resting place, and the place that has known James Barton for so many years shall know him no more forever.

Isabella McDonald, wife of the late Malcolm McKenzie, died at the residence of her son-in-law Mr. Joseph Shorthill, Chapman street, on Sunday morning, about ten o'clock. Deceased, up to the last two years, had enjoyed excellent health, but latterly the infirmities of old age told heavily on Mrs. McKenzie and some seven weeks ago she was taken seriously ill. Heart failure was the cause of her death and the end was not unexpected. Deceased, who was born in Invernesshire, Scotland, was in the 75th year of her age. Her father died some 50 years ago. Some fifty-three years since the subject of this sketch was married to the late Malcolm McKenzie, in Scotland and in the year 1850 they came to this country first settling in Weston, where they resided only a few years. Subsequently, Mr. and Mrs. McKenzie removed to Galt and took up their permanent residence here, about 35 years ago. Deceased's husband died in 1865. In the death of Mrs. McKenzie a family of six children are left to mourn the departure of a kind and esteemed mother. The sons are; Hugh of San Antonio, Texas ; Daniel of El Paso, Texas and Angus late of Texas, who is now on his way home. The other son is John who resides in Galt. The daughters are: Mrs. Jas. Barton of Roseville, and Mrs. Joseph Shortill Chapman street. The late Mrs. McKenzie was one of the oldest members of Knox church, being a faithful attendant and constant worshipper at that church, ever since her residence in Galt. The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon, at 4 o'clock, to Mount View cemetery.
