    George H. Lawrence Passes

One of Ayr's most beloved residents, George Lawrence, passed away on Monday at the Kitchener-Waterloo Hospital, where he had been confined for only a short period. He was in his 83rd year. He was born in Belgrave, Ont., a son of the late Charles Lawrence and Suzanne Sherry. He was the last surviving member of his family. Mr. Lawrence came to Ayr as a young man, where he was employed for a time with the John Watson Mfg. Co, Ltd. He later established the Ayr Home Bakery. In conjunction with his bakery business, he also operated a retail outlet, first in the Masonic building and later in the store now occupied by Todd's IGA Market. His reputation for excellent products resulted in a large patronage not only in the village but in the outlying rural area, and "Lawrence's bread truck" called at nearly every home. For some 32 years he successfully operated this business before going into semi-retirement. In later years he undertook custom painting and similar employment at which he was quite proficient. Mr. Lawrence was possessed of a remarkably jolly nature and saw the humorous side of almost any situation. At most social events or other affairs he attended, his presence was easily detected by his infectious laugh, which unproved the atmosphere at any affair. He was a keen sportsman all of his life, and was particularly noted for his ability at curling and lawn bowling. He was a veteran member of both the Ayr Curling Club and Ayr Bowling Club, and had been on many rinks whi9ch brought home important trophies in both sports. Over the years he served in most executive posts on both clubs. Mr. Lawrence was an important figure in Ayr's fraternal life. He was a member of Dolman Lodge, IOOF fore more than half a century having received his 50 year jewel some years ago. He had served as Noble Grand of this lodge and in other offices as well. In addition Mr. Lawrence was a veteran member of Ayr Masonic Lodge, where he had filled the office of Master and was treasurer for more than 20 years. His interests ran to municipal life as well, and for many years he was a trustee on the Ayr Board of Education, at the time when this body supervised both elementary and secondary schools here. Mr. Lawrence was a valued member of Knox United Church and was a familiar face in the choir for several decades. His musical talents were also displayed in pre-World War I days as a member of the former Ayr Citizens' Band. This village is poorer today through the loss of one of its prominent and most respected citizens whose contribution to our community life was outstanding in many ways. Surviving are his wife, the former Agnes Bell, whom he married 60 years ago this coming fall; a son, Wilbur W. of Leamington; a daughter, Mrs. George W. Vogan (Isobel Sherry) of Agincourt, and six grandchildren.

    The Funeral

Funeral service was held today (Wednesday) from Knox United Church, with temporary entombment in Ayr Cemetery Chapel. A Masonic Service, under auspices of Ayr Lodge, was held at the W. O. Ball Funeral Home on Tuesday evening.

    Passing of John Currie
Lived Upwards of 90 Years in This Community

This week we have to chronicle the passing of the oldest resident of the community in the person of John Currie, who died at the residence of his son-in-law, Mr. Robert Smuck, Paris Road, on Monday, June 20th, at the ripe age of over 95 years. The deceased was born in Roxboroughshire, Scotland, and came to Canada at the age of four years, settling on the farm now occupied by Mr. Stephen Gemmell, afterwards locating at different periods on several other farms in the locality.

Over 40 years ago Mr. Currie discontinued farming and moved into Ayr, where he started a coal yard, being the first coal merchant in the village. During the time he was farming, he also did a lot of teaming between here and Hamilton, and other points from lake to lake.

To have lived upwards of 90 years in one community falls to the lot of few men. The changes he witnessed in that long period can probably be better imagined than described. Suffice it that in his early days the country was in a crude state. There were no railroads and in fact very few and very indifferent roads of any kind. The forests were the rendezvous of Indians, wolves, bears and highway men, and the whole country was passing through the throes of a rebellion. He successfully weathered all these adverse conditions and prospered as the country developed.

Mr. Currie was a Reformer in politics and a Presbyterian in religion, being a member of Knox United Church. His partner in life was Agnes Pringle, who predeceased him some years. A family of five were born to them - two of whom, Isabell and William, have passed on before.

Those living are Mrs. Geo. Swan, sr., Ayr; Mrs. Margaret Bell, Galt; and Mrs. Robert Smuck, South Dumfries. A brother and sister, Peter Currie and Mrs. Christie (Toronto), also survive. Interment was made in the Ayr cemetery yesterday, the funeral being very largely attended. Rev. J. J. Brown conducted the services, and the pallbearers were principally grandchildren, viz., Currie Smuck, John, Ewart and James Bell, Robert Smuck and George H. Lawrence.
