    Passing of Alexander Gray

In the death of Mr. Alexander Gray, which occurred on Feb. 24, Greenfield loses one of its oldest and most highly esteemed residents - a man of whom it can be truly said the community was the better for his having lived in it. Mr. Gray had attained his 68th year, 41 of which were spent in Greenfield, where, up to 15 years ago, he followed the occupation of a cooper and had since been engaged in farming. He was born in Ireland and came to Canada with his parents at the age of about six months, settling at Waterdown and late at Greenfield. Some 40 years ago he married Sarah An McCall, who survives. In politics Mr. Gray was a staunch Liberal of the old school, and in religion a Methodist of a practical character. He attended the services in Ayr regularly and for some years was the efficient super-intendent of the Sabbath School, discharging his duties with credit to himself and benefit to the classes assembled. The family comprises two sons and two daughters, viz., Norman M., Edward, Mrs. Walter Scott and Miss Maud Gray, all of whom reside at Greenfield. The funeral took place on Friday afternoon, when interment was made in the Ayr cemetery, Rev. E. S. Hiscocks conducting the services. Pallbearers were Messrs. Wm. Patterson, Geo. Smye, Henry Elliott, John Myers, J. W. Hut and John J. Hodgson.

Mrs. Gray was born near Hamilton, and came to Greenfield with her husband about 49 years ago where Mr. Gray was employed as a cooper for a long number of years. She is survived by two sons and two daughters, as follows: Norman, Blenheim; Edward, Fling, Mich.; Mrs. Walter Scott, North Dumfries; and Maude, at home.
