Fatal Accident in Galt - An Old Resident Instantly Killed

A very sad accident happened in Galt on Tuesday afternoon last, about 5 o'clock, whereby an old and well known resident, Mr. Isaac Martin, was instantly killed. The deceased has been teaming about the town for many years, and on the afternoon in question went to remove a small load of hay from the lower part of the Central School grounds to the residence of Mr. Thos. Dalgleish. After loading the hay on the wagon, Mr. Martin got on top of it and drove to the gate leading out of the grounds, which was opened for him by Mr. Dalgleish, who also closed it after him, and then turned round and went up the hill towards his own residence, so as to be ready to meet Mr. Martin at his stable. What followed after the unfortunate deceased drove through the gate is merely a matter of conjecture, as no one saw the accident happen; but some parties passing the spot a few minutes afterwards found Mr. Martin lying on the ground insensible, but still breathing. He was instantly raised from the ground, but he barely gasped a dozen times before his spirit took its flight. His team meanwhile had run towards Concession Street, where it was stopped. As we have said before, it is impossible to state for a certainty how the accident happened, but there being quite a sharp descent from the sidewalk which he had to cross after passing through the gate to the street it is conjectured that he must have overbalanced himself and fallen headlong form the top of the load to the ground, a distance of some six or seven feet. Upon an after examination by Dr. Vardon, it was found that his neck had been broken by the fall. The remains were at once removed to his late residence, Market Street, where they were afterwards viewed by a Jury empanelled by Dr. Philip to inquire into the cause of death. After hearing the evidence, the Jury returned a verdict of "accidental death."

The deceased had been a resident of Galt and neighborhood for many years, and was formerly a resident of the Township of Waterloo, where he carried on farming. He was for some years the proprietor of "Martin's Mill," - now carried on by Mr. Austin - on Mill creek, about three miles from this town. This venture not proving successful, however, he moved into the town, where he has since resided. He was an industrious, honest man, and his fearfully sudden death has cast quite a gloom over his large circle of friends and acquaintances.
