CHARLES KAPPLER HAGEDORN.

Various commercial and manufacturing interests contribute to the material growth and development of Berlin, including the Berlin Suspender & Button Company, of which Charles Kappler Hagedorn is the head. His life record began on the 5th of February, 1859, in the township of Waterloo, five miles south of Berlin, his parents being Ernest A. P. and Maria (Kappler) Hagedorn, the former a native of Hanover, Germany, and the latter of Bavaria. Ernest Hagedorn was but twelve years of age when he came to Ontario, having previously been left an orphan by the death of his parents. In 1831 he became a resident of Waterloo county, where he worked at farm labor and when his diligence and economy made possible the purchase of land he began farming on his own account and continued in that line of activity until his death, which occurred in 1875, when he was fifty six years of age. He was one of the early settlers, clearing the home farm of one hundred acres from the bush and meeting with all of the usual experiences, hardships and privations of pioneer life. He persevered in his labor, however, and aided in reclaiming a wild region for the purposes of civilization. His place was on the Bechtel tract near the village of Williamsburg, about five miles south of Berlin. For many years Mr. Hagedorn served as school trustee of his district.

Charles K. Hagedorn was reared to farm life, early becoming familiar with the duties and labors that fall to the lot of the agriculturist. He attended the public schools at Williamsburg, completing his studies when eighteen years of age, and in the fall of 1877 he began teaching school, continuing in that profession until 1884. He afterward turned his attention to merchandising as a traveling salesman throughout the province and was thus engaged until 1889, when he began the manufacture of suspenders and buttons in connection with J. R. Stouffer under the name of the J. R. Stouffer Company, Limited. They carried on business until 1895, when they dissolved partnership. Mr. Hagedorn then formed the Berlin Suspender & Button Company and under this name has since carried on business. In 1900 he erected the present plant on King street East, a brick building two storey and basement, forty by eighty feet. Here he employs thirty-five operatives in the manufacture of buttons and suspenders, which are sold to the trade throughout the Dominion. He has built up an excellent reputation for the quality of his goods and reliability in business affairs and is meeting with a measure of success which is the merited reward of his enterprise and labor.

Mr. Hagedorn has served as a member of the Berlin municipal council. He was chairman of the original commission which succeeded in taking over and rebuilding the present electric light and gas plant under municipal ownership. He likewise belongs to the Board of Trade and has served for two years as its president. Previous to this time the organization had had but little or no force, but during his presidency it was developed into a very influential institution, having marked effect on the public life of the town, Mr. Hagedorn being the moving spirit in bringing about this change. In 1889 occurred the marriage of the subject of this review and Miss Emily Cairnes, a daughter of John Cairnes of Berlin, who was one of the pioneers of North Easthope. They have three children : Lloyd Elmo, Grover Cairnes and Edna Aleen. The family attend the services of the Presbyterian Church, of which Mr. Hagedorn is a member. He votes with the Reform party and belongs to the Ancient Order of United Workmen, the Ancient Order of Foresters and the Woodmen of the World. In business affairs he displays promptness and notable reliability, meeting every obli- gation that devolves upon him and keeping in touch with the trend of modern progress.

King Street, Kitchener

Eby to Cedar Street

On the corner a one and one-half story frame building, lengthwise with King Street, occupied by Adam Jaeckel as a bakery. Jaeckel had a high reputation as a baker and guarded the secret of his process. The story is that he had his bake-oven in the basement of the building, where in the evening he would set dough for about forty loaves of bread. He would then put the cover on the baking trough and sleep on it. When the dough would rise sufficiently, about three or four o'clock in the morning, it would wake him. He would then proceed with his baking and later go fishing, of which he was very fond. Later on this building, painted drab, was used by Town Constable Joachim.

A garden.

A one and one-half story building lengthwise with King Street occupied by John Heller in 1843 as a jewelry and watchmaking shop.

Residence occupied by Philip Moogk, as cabinetmaker and carpenter.

A two story frame building with gable facing King Street, occupied by Gottlieb Ratliman, a tailor. The same building was used 1850-55 as a tavern by a Mr. Jahn, Bandmaster Kayser occupied one end of the building after 1864. Kayser also had a saloon and beer garden, the latter a place of general entertainment during the summer months, with concerts, dances, etc.

Three Berliners

Three Berliners were called away by death on Sunday. After a lengthy period of suffering from dropsy, the widow of the late E.A.P. Hagedorn of Williamsburg (deceased 28 years ago) died here. She is survived by eleven children, namely George and Herman in Williamsburg, Charles K. in Berlin, William in Paisley, Mrs. Ludolph in Waterloo Township, Mrs. Einwächter in New Dundee, Mrs. Wieland in Michigan, Mrs. Monk in Elmwood, and Mrs. Y. Stroh in Fischer's Mills, Mrs. Main in Strasburg, and Mrs. J.E. Vogt in Berlin. Burial follows on Wednesday in Mannheim.

Mrs. Clara Oberholtzer also departed here on Sunday, after suffering for five years from consumption. She was the youngest daughter of widow, Mrs. John Oberholtzer.

On Sunday, the wife of William Sherk, local resident, was called by death, as a victim of typhoid pneumonia, contracted on a recent visit to Bay City, Michigan. She was a daughter of Mrs. Gaukel, who had a shop on King Street for years. The deceased leaves her husband and a nine-year-old daughter.

DEATH OF AN OLD PIONEER

The Late John Cairnes

As briefly noted in our issue of Saturday. Mr. John Cairnes, of Weber street, Berlin, passed peacefuly away to his long rest on the 18th inst. after a short and painfull illness. For several days he had been tired, nature could hold out no longer, and he passed away quietly, like the falling of a leaf.

Deceased was born in the year 1818, in Tyrone Co, Ireland, being the oldest of a family of four, a brother and two sisters surviving him. He emigrated to Canada West with his father in 1841, and after spending a whole summer travelling through the wilderness from Hamilton to Lake Huron they finally settled ona bush farm in the township of North Easthope, County of Perth.

The task of establishing a home in the Indian? forest fifty years ago, was beset by many privations and difficulites, but being possessed of robust health and a determination to succeed, they soon hewed out for themselves a comfortable home.

The only available market in those days was Hamilton and the reader can easily imagine what it meant to team the products of the bush farms all that distance, necessitatiing a two days' trip there and back.

After succeeding to the homestead on the death of his father, he carried on farming until his health gave way in 1867, when he sold out and moved to the village of New Hamburg where he resided for twelve years, being the moving spirit in all educational matters there.

Being a man of wide and varied reading and desirouas of affording his family greater educational facilities, he moved to Berlin in 1879.

In politics he was a staunch Conservative, and a strong admirer of the late Sir John A. MaDonald. The only time that the representation in the House of Commons was wrested from the Liberals of South Waterloo, ws when deceased championed the cause of our present Senator, the Hon. Saml. Merner.

He was a familiar figure on the streets of Berlin during the past fourteen years, and although taking no active part in the town's affairs, he was keenly alive to what was going on. He leaves behind him a wife and nine children, three sons and six daughters to mourn his loss.

Thus one by one all our first settlers are emigrating to their final home and we will soon be a nation lamenting the absence of the strong true and honest men, who laid the...
