Mrs. Jonas B. Bingeman

Many friends will deeply regret to learn of the passing of Elizabeth Cook Oberholtzer, beloved wife of Jonas B. Bingeman, which occurred at her home at Bloomingdale, Tuesday, November 10th, in her 68th year. Deceased will be sorely missed by a large circle of friends throughout the district by whom she was greatly beloved. There survive to mourn her death a husband, two sons and two daughters. Gordon, of South River, Alice, matron at the Freeport Sanitarium, Mrs. Irvin K. Weber, of Waterloo. and Marshall at home. Also one sister and one brother, Mrs. J. H. Sheppard of Bloomingdale and Abram C. Oberholtzer of South River. A large number of friends and relatives attended the funeral which was held Friday afternoon Impressive services were conducted at the United Church at Blooming dale after which interment was made in the Mennonite cemetery.

Bingeman), Florence, and Anna; also by five grandchildren and the following brothers and sisters: Sidney, Mrs. E. G. Lang, Mrs. W. Durham, and Misses Bertie and Susie Shantz. One brother (Dr. U. B. Shantz) predeceased him some six years ago. Funeral services were held Nov. 17 from his late home and at the Sterling Ave. Church, conducted by U. K. Weber, pastor of the congregation, and S. F. Coffman, of Vineland, Ont.

Mrs. Catherine Shantz, 79, of Kitchener died at Elmira Private Hospital Monday. Born in Bridgeport, she was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Peter Shirk. She was a member of Stirling Ave. Mennonite Church and of the Missionary Society. Surviving are three sons, Mervin of Alma, Edward of Kitchener and Frank of Kitchener; three daughters. Mrs. Marshall (Erma) Bingeman, Mrs. Maxwell (Florence) Becker and Mrs. Ewan (Anna) Cameron, all of Kitchener; one brother, Noah Shirk of Bridgeport: four sisters, Mrs. Addison D. Snyder of Bloomingdale, Mrs. Addison S. Snider, Mrs. Ben Drudge and Mrs. Walter Shantz, all of Bridgeport. Her husband, Allan B. Shantz, predeceasedher in 1931. The body is at the Ratz-Bechtel Funeral Home, until Friday noon, when removal will be made to Stirling Ave. Mennonite Church for the funeral at 2: 30 p.m., Rev. Wilfred Ulrich, assisted by Rev. U. K. Weber, will officiate. Interment will be in Woodland Cemetery.

Jonas Bingeman, "was born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, April 9th, 1817. In 1825 he came to Canada with his parents who had moved in the wilderness near Bridgeport, Ontario. Here he had, even in his boyhood days, to assist in hewing out a home in the primeval forest. When a boy, 14 or 15 years of age, he used to drive through the forest to Dundas, thirty miles distant, being the nearest business place for these early pioneers. A trip to Dundas was nothing uncommon, then considered no more an undertaking than going two miles to town in our day. In common with the rising generation of the day Mr Bingeman received his education in the stern school of experience and hard work. The school he attended was to the east end of Berlin to which place he had to go through miles of forest. He generally took a straight course through the forest from his father's home to that of Mr. John Brubacher's where he met the first clearing. he only subjects then taught were reading, writing, and arithmetic. This school Mr. Bingeman attended for a few short winter months for several years in succession. In 1842 he was married to Elizabeth, daughter of John and Catharine (Sherk) Brubacher. She was born December 13th, 1820. After their marriage they moved on their farm about three miles west of Berlin where they resided until 1882 when they quite the farm and moved to the town of Berlin where they own a beautiful residence, No. 111 S. Frederick Street. They are still enjoying the best of health and are spending the evening of their days in ease and comfort. Their family consisted of nine children".

Bingeman - On the 11th of September, 1897, at his home on Frederick St., Berlin, Ont., after long continued suffering of cancer in the face, Bro. Jonas Bingeman, aged 80 years, 5 months and 2 days. Bro. Bingeman was born in Montgomery Co., Pa., on the 9th of April, 1817. In 1825 he came to Canada with his parents, who settled near Bridgeport. In 1842 he married Elizabeth, daughter of John and Catharine Brubacher. They moved on a farm a few miles west of Berlin, where they resided until 1822, when they moved to Berlin. He leaves his aged widow, four sons, three daughters, a number of grandchildren and a large circle of friends to mourn his departure. He was a consistent member of the Mennonite church for many years, and enjoyed the highest esteem of all. The remains were laid to rest at the C. Eby M.H., Berlin, on the 14th, followed by a large concourse of relatives and friends.

On the 22d of January 1899, at her residence, Frederick St., Berlin, Ont., of Lagrippe and pneumonia, Sister Elizabeth Brubacher, widow of the late Bro. Jonas Bingeman, aged 78 years, 1 month and 7 days. Sister Bingeman had been enjoying good health up to the 17th ult., when she was seized with an attack of the grippe. Two days later she took her bed, and although medical aid was promptly summoned the disease took its course, and she quietly passed away with the glorious hope of meeting her Redeemer in the world of light. She was the daughter of the late John Brubacher, one of the early residents of this locality and in her childhood was a pupil of the well known Bish. Benjamin Eby. She was united in marriage to Jonas Bingeman in 1842. Of their nine children eight survive her, all married but one, who, with true filial devotion, cared for her parents in their declining years. She leaves also many grandchildren and numerous friends to mourn their lose. Her funeral on the 25th at the C. Eby M. H. was very largely attended. Services by Daniel Wismer in German and by Noah Stauffer in English.

Fatal LaGrippe
Mrs. Jonas Bingeman Receives the Final Summons

Mrs. Jonas Bingeman one of Berlin's oldest and most highly respected ladies, passed quietly away at 3 o'clock on Sunday afternoon, after an illness of about a week's duration. She was suffering with LaGrippe, which, though broken up, weakened her that she fell a victim to heart failure. The funeral will be held on Wednesday morning at 9:30 from the family residence, Five Points, Frederick St., to the East End Mennonite church and cemetery.

Deceased was revered by all who knew her for her Christian graces and kindly life, her many words and acts of assistance cheering the pathway of life for many a fellow traveller. She leaves behind to mourn her loss eight children, all grown up, four sons and four daughters. Messrs John Joseph, Jonas and Elias, of Berlin, Mrs. M. Weber, town; Mrs. M B Shantz and Mrs. R Dewart, Rochester, N. Y., and Miss K. Bingeman, at home. Mrs. Bingeman attended school in a little red school house near where the Mennonite church now stands, and which was taught by Mr. Benj. Eby. Her husband predeceased her a little over a year ago.

Death of Owen Oberholtzer

Yesterday we announced the serious illness of Mr. Owen Oberholtzer of Mossboro and today it is our sad duty to record his death. He passed away at 11 o'clock, Wednesday. The immediate cause of his death being heart failure. He was in his 59th year and was a man greatly respected for his upright character and neighbourly qualities.

Besides carrying on a successful farming business he was at times engaged in several manufacturing concerns and died wealthy, being worth, it is estimated, about $75,000. He leaves a wife and four children, a son , Abram, and three married daughters, Mrs J. H. Sheppard, Mrs. H. Ward and Mrs. J. Bingeman, to mourn his death. The funeral will take place on Saturday next (29th) from his late residence to the Bloomingdale Burying Ground. In him passed away one of the early settlers of Waterloo County.

She leaves to mourn their loss a loving husband, 4 daughters, and 3 sons, besides relatives and friends.The funeral services were held Aug. 22 at the Berlin Mennonite Church, conducted by Bros. U. K. Weber and S. F. Coffman, Psa. 23 was read and the text chosen was II Cor. 5: 1: " For we know that if our earthly house of this tabernacle were dissolved, we have a building of God, an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens."Sister Shantz was a faithful Christian and member of the Mennonite Church since her youth. She also had the pleasure of seeing all her family brought into the fold of Christ. Her presence in the community and at services will be greatly missed for she was of a kind and loving disposition always ready and anxious to help those in need; and the hungry stranger who came to her door was fed and sheltered. " As ye have done it unto one of the least of these, ye did it unto me." She suffered from a complication of diseases for about 18 months, being cared for by her daughters, who deemed it a great privilege to minister to her every need. Her sufferings at times were very intense, but she never murmured or complained, bearing all with Christian fortitude and patience. The end came unexpectedly as a result of heart failure, but she always testified that she was ready to meet her Savior and the family need not mourn as those having no hope, for " Though she be dead, yet she liveth."

Peter Shirk, "son of Christian and Elizabeth (Hoffman) Shirk, is a native of Canarvon Township, Lancaster County Pa., where he was born November 11th, 1839. When a young man he left his native state and went to Canada, arriving at Berlin, Ontario, May 1st, 1862. Here he had his home with his uncle the late Jacob Hoffman in whose services he was for nearly two months, piling lumber and assisting in the saw mill. From here he went to the town of Waterloo and engaged himself as miller with D. H. Moyer & Co. who were then the proprietors of the Union Mills. After E. and S. S. Snider became proprietors of the mills he continued his services with the new firm until December 1st, 1866, when he purchased the Blair Mills. Here Mr. Shirk did a well paying business until December, 1869, when he sold the mills and, entering into partnership with Mr. S. S. Snider of Waterloo, purchased in December of the same year (1869) the Lancaster Mills of Bridgeport where he has since been engaged very extensively in manufacturing patent and high grade flour. In 1887 Mr. Snider retired from the firm, thus leaving Mr. Shirk sole proprietor of the extensive business. In connection with the Lancaster Mills, Mr. Shirk is also proprietor of the Baden Mills which he purchased from Mr. James Livingstone in 1889. Mr Shirk commenced life as a farmer's boy and being possessed with but little of this world's substance, he, by energy and perseverance and being naturally gifted with first class business qualities, besides having a good character, gradually worked his way up from one position to another and is now rated as one of our well-to-do millers (See his rating in the Mercantile Agency for the Dominion of Canada by R. G. Dun & Co.) of the province. Of late years he has been identified with public life and has held prominent positions of honour and trust, thus proving for himself a record of which no one has any need of feeling ashamed. On June 5th, 1866, he was married to Magdalena, daughter of John and Anna (Weber) Martin. She was born March 2nd, 1845. They reside in Bridgeport, Ontario. To them were born the following children"

Shirk.--Peter Shirk was born in Lancaster Co., Pa., Nov. 11, 1839; died in Bridgeport, Ont., on Oct. 1, 1919; aged 79 y. 10 m. 20 d. Bro. Shirk came to Canada in 1862 and entered the milling business. He was married twice, his first wife being Magdalene Martin who died 24 years ago and the second wife was Judith Krampien who survives. There are also left to mourn his departure ten children, 38 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Funeral Services were held on Oct. 6 at First Mennonite Church, Kitchener, Ont. The services at the house were conducted by Bro. Noah Stauffer and at the Church by the brethren Jonas Snider, Urias Martin and Manasseh Hallman.

PETER SHIRK

It will be of interest to know a little of his ancestors. The first we have record of was Ulrich Shirk who came from Switzerland in 1832 to Pennsylvania with his six sons and two daughters. One son was named Peter who had a son named Joseph and Joseph had a son named Christian.

Peter Shirk was the son of Christian and Elizabeth (Hoffman) Shirk and was a native of Caernarvon Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, where he was born November 11th, 1839. He came from a poor family which made it necessary for him to go to work and help support the family when eleven years of age. He worked hard and had long hours, but he was eager to learn so studied a good deal at night. He learned the milling trade at Peter Rupe's flour mill near Churchtown, Pennsylvania.

When he was a young man he left his native state and came to Canada with his eldest sister Barbara, arriving at Berlin (Kitchener) on May 1st, 1861. He made his home with his uncle, the late Jacob Hoffman in whose services he was for nearly two months piling lumber and assisting in the saw mills. (Jacob Hoffman's saw mill was situated where Schreiter's Furniture Store now stands). From here he went to the village of Waterloo and engaged himself as miller with D. H. Moyer & Co., who were then the proprietors of the Union Mills. After E. and S. S. Snider became proprietors of the mills he continued with the new firm until December 1st, 1866, when he purchased the Blair Mills. Here he did a well paying business until December, 1869, when he sold the mills and entered into partnership with Samuel Snider in Bridgeport. In 1887 Peter Shirk bought Mr. Snider's interest in the company and continued the business under the name of Shirk & Snider until 1910 when the firm name was changed to Shirk & Snider Ltd., Peter Shirk as President and his eldest son Geo. M. as managing-director.

On August 17th, 1889, the Baden Mills were purchased from James Livingstone, the business having grown to such an extent that it was necessary to increase its capacity. The two mills, Bridgeport and Baden had a combined capacity of 250 barrels per day.

The Bridgeport flour mill of Shirk & Snider Ltd. is one of the old industries of Waterloo County, this mill having been built in 1830 and the dam, of about 25 acres, in 1829, by Jacob Shoemaker. Mr. Shoemaker operated the mill for 20 years when he sold to Elias Eby who had it for the following 20 years. Peter Shirk and S. S. Snider bought from Mr. Eby in 1870. The buildings were always kept in good repair and the machinery modern.

In addition to the mill Peter Shirk also owned and operated a cooperage, supplying the barrels for the Bridgeport, Baden, Waterloo and other mills. Most of the flour was sold and shipped in barrels in the earlier days. All the export flour had to be teamed to Dundas in the early days as that was the nearest shipping station. After 1856 the flour was teamed to Berlin (now Kitchener.) In 1903, through the influence and efforts of Peter Shirk a spur line was extended direct to the mill from the beet sugar factory of that time.

The company 's products always had an enviable reputation both locally and in the foreign markets. The special flour brands were "Buda" a blended flour for all purposes (this getting its name from the abbreviation of Budapest, Hungary, where the first roller mills were used) ; "Two Sisters" a special flour for pastry and cakes and "Evangeline" a pure Manitoba flour for bread.

Peter Shirk was in his youth possessed of but little of this world's substance, but by energy and perservance and being naturally gifted with first class business qualities besides having a good character, he gradually worked his way up from one position to another and to affluence. In his later years he was identified with public life and held prominent positions of honor and trust. He was on the board of trustees of the Kitchener and Waterloo Collegiate and Technical Institute about 30 years. During his term he was instrumental in having Manual Training and Household Science added to the curriculum. He was treasurer of Waterloo Township for 20 years when he resigned, being succeeded by his son, Geo. M., who held the position for 15 years. Allen Shirk has been Township Treasurer for the past 6 years, since the death of his father Geo. M. Shirk.

Peter Shirk was married on June 5th, 1866, to Magdalena (Weber) Martin. Mrs. Peter Shirk's grandfather was Abraham Weber who in company with Benj. Eby and wife, Samuel Eby and family, Joseph Schneider and family, and others, came to this section of Waterloo County on June 2nd, 1807. The Conestogo driven by Abraham Weber on his trip from Lan-caster County, Pennsylvania, in 1807, is now in the Waterloo Historical Society Museum.

Soon after Abraham Weber's arrival in Canada he married Elizabeth Cressman and they settled on the corner of King and Wilmot Streets where the Canadian Goodrich plant is now situated. It was at this place that Mrs. Peter Shirk's mother was born, on August 14th, 1811, being one of the first children born in Berlin (Kitchener).

To Mr. and Mrs. Peter Shirk were born the following children: Peter, Anna, George, Emma, Elizabeth, Catherine, Martin, Magdalena, John, Maria, Noah, Veronica and Barbara. Mr. Shirk's first wife died on November 7th, 1895 and Peter Shirk died on October 1st, 1919, aged 79 years. He is survived by his second wife, 1 son and 7 daughters.

SHERK. - On the 7th of November, 1895, in Bridgeport, Waterloo Co., Ont., Magdalena Martin, beloved wife of Peter Sherk, aged 50 years, 8 months, 5 days. Buried on the 10th at Eby's M. H. Funeral services by Joseph Gingrich and Paul Martin. She leaves a sorrowing husband and large family and many relatives and friends to mourn their loss.
