103 Years Old County Pioneer Geo. Trussler

Dies Waterloo County's Grand Old Man Dies After Brief Illness.

NEW DUNDEE - Waterloo County's grand old man, George Trussler, who celebrated his 103rd birthday last June 5, passed away at his home near here on Saturday evening. Mr. Trussler had been in his usual health until the day before Christmas when the doctor was first summoned. His death robs the county of one of its few remaining pioneers who according to his own opinion lived in one of the greatest centuries of progress the world has ever known. Born near Preston, Ont., on June 5, 1838, Mr. Trussler was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Trussler, who came to Canada from Sussex, England, in 1833. When one year of age he moved with his parents to the 240 acres of virgin land bordering the Huron Road which is now owned by his son, Oscar Trussler. Here he and his family cleared the land, built homes for themselves, as well as assisting with constructing the first roads in the district.

    Retained Excellent Memory

Blessed with an excellent memory, Mr. Trussler could relate many interesting stories of the early settlement of this part of the country. Even after retiring from active farming more than forty years ago he did not give up his hobby of gardening and was well-known for his lovely flowers. Hunting and travelling were other favourite hobbies. The late Mr. Trussler was particularly fond of reading and kept a diary almost continuously until he passed his 100th birthday. A highlight in his centennial celebration were the telegrams received from their majesties, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, Prime Minister Mackenzie King and Premier Hepburn. Mr. Trussler was always proud of the fact that he had lived under the reign of five sovereigns. In religion be was a Christa Delphian.

    Mrs, Trussler Died at 92

1n 1859 Mr. Trussler married Miss Sarah Brighton, who passed away in her 92nd year, severing a partnership that lasted 74 years, one of the longest marriages on record. Mr. Trussler has outlived four of his eight children, his oldest son, Thomas, of Trout Creek, Ont., having died last winter in his 81st year. Four other sons are still living, namely: James and Gilbert of Orillia; Oscar on the old homestead, and Herbert of British Columbia. Two sons and a daughter, Byron; Albert and Jessie; all predeceased him several years ago. The funeral was held on Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 31st, with a private service at 2 o'clock at the home of his son, Oscar Trussler, Huron Road, followed by a public, service at the Rosebank Tunker Church. Interment was made in the adjoining cemetery.

    Oldest Man In County Dies

George Trussler Was In His 104th Year

The oldest man in Waterloo County and perhaps in this part of the province, Mr. Geo. Trussler, passed peacefully away at his home near New Dundee at the age of 103 years, last Saturday evening. He had been ill only a few days and with the exception of being slightly hard of hearing, he retained all his faculties to the end. He could still read without glasses.

This grand old man was a native of Waterloo County, being born on June 5, 1838 at Fisher's Mill, near Hespeler. His parents came from Sussex, England, in 1833 and a year later settled on a 240-acre homestead near New Dundee, which they cleared. As a young man, he assisted in the work of clearing farms in Wilmot and Waterloo Townships.

Farming successfully for many years, the late Mr. Trussler retired in 1892. He was married to Sarah Brighton and they lived to celebrate their 74th wedding anniversary together. She passed away in 1933.

Since he reached his 90th birthday his natal day became an interesting event and especially on passing the century mark many people called on his birthday to extend congratulations and their visits were always greatly enjoyed by him.

Of a family of eight children, four survive him. They are James and Gilbert of Orillia, Oscar on the old homestead and Herbert of Vancouver, B.C. He is also survived by 39 grandchildren, 75 great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren.

The funeral was held on Wednesday to the Rosebank Church and Cemetery.
