    Notes:

George and Elizabeth Reist purchased the Rosendale property from David and Mary Ann Bott March 28, 1908, for $1,450 including a horse, some cows and various implements. Trading horses was a favorite pastime of George Reist. Many horses passed through his hands and he had a favorite cure for balky animals. When a horse balked, ground was put into its mouth and the unpleasant taste diverted the animal's mind and made it co-operate for the time being at least. On more than one occasion two or three animals were traded in one day.
George Reist was employed as a travelling salesman by Dumarts Limited (now Burns & Company) for eight to ten years and in his absence Mrs. Reist and the older children operated a market gardening business and attended the Berlin weekly market.

The 16 year old son Clayton was employed at the Sugar factory and on Nov. 10, 1910 he wo s so severely scalded in an accident there, that doctors despaired for his life . He was taken to the Berlin Hospital in an ambulance drawn by horses. His good health and constant attendance by nurses were factors in his miraculous recovery. He was in hospital until Christmas and the entire cost was $84 for hospitalization, nurses and doctors.

George Reist was a firm believer in planting in the time of the moon, and also in the practice of charming for ailments. The sauerkraut business began on a small scale. Mrs. Reist cut the cabbage by hand and made sauerkraut by the dish pan full.

They soon supplied sauerkraut for the suppers peculiar to this district and Polish wedding receptions. For a time sauerkraut suppers were served at their home in Rosendale. The largest supper was served to 72 people on the lawn. The Reists were by now producing large quantities of sauerkraut and it was made by machinery. At the Kitchener market customers were lined three deep at the Reist stall to buy their weekly supply. One man remarked that the Reist stall was "one place where we get Scripture measures".

Mr. and Mrs. George Reist enjoyed good health and continued to be active. A 60th wedding anniversary was celebrated on Sept. 15, 1951. betters were received iron Prime Minister St. Laurent, Louis 0. Breithaupt, M.P., and Mayor S. Leavine of Kitchener. Five years later a 65th wedding anniversary was held at a family dinner at the Old Landmark, Conestoga. Mrs. Reist was 88 years old at this time and Mr. Reist 86. Mr. Reist said on this occasion - "when a person is getting old one snould take something to keep his blood thin". He went on to explain that this counteracts the tendency of the blood to clot which often causes death. He recommended mineral salts to be taken each morning before breakfast. He also advocated he use flax seed for its benficial effects.

Death of an Old Resident of Waterloo Township

Philip Zeller, one of the old residents of Waterloo Twp., died at his residence in Breslau on Sunday morning. Mr. Zeller was born in Bavaria, Germany, on the 1st of August, 1818 and came to this country with his parents and their other children, about the year 1830. After a few years sojourn on a farm at St. Catharines. His father sold out there and bought the Cressman farm at Breslau, containing about two hundred and thirty acres, which he made into two, giving one to each of his two sons, Jacob and Philip. Deceased married Martin Schiedel's daughter, Sarah, who survives him and with whom and the family that grew up around them, he lived prosperously on his farm, until April of last year, when on account of failing health and vigor, he retired from the farm and moved into a comfortable home, which he purchased in Breslau village and where he and his wife and one of his daughters intended to live during what days might remain for him. His health, however, continued steadily to decline, until he passed away painlessly and peacefully. He was an exceedingly kind husband and father, well beloved and highly esteemed, by all who knew him.

This farm contained 183 acres and the price paid for it was $4600. In 1854 this large farm was divided into two farms. The north part was purchased by Mr. Philip Zeller, the younger son of old Mr. Zeller, while Jacob Zeller retained the south part, containing the old "Cressman Buildings." Here Mr. Zeller died July 18th, 1854. His family consisted of five children, viz:"1
