    _______________

Shurly & Dietrich, Manufacturers of Saws, Plastering Trowels, Straw Knives, etc. - The history of the "Maple Leaf Saw Works," of which Messrs. Shurly & Dietrich are the proprietors, is a history of what perseverance, thrift, enterprise and ability, can accomplish in a short number of years. This business was started in the year 1874, in a very small way, in a small building, where employment was given to about four or five workmen. These gentlemen worked hard, and built up a reputation for the quality of their goods which brought them increasing custom, which came so rapidly that they had scarcely finished one new building before they had to commence putting up another to meet the requirements of their rapidly developing trade. To-day the works cover an acre of ground, with buildings for factory, boiler house, office and lumber sheds. There is a beauty and finished appearance about the whole of the buildings that is pleasing to look upon. The office is more like a gentleman's private residence than an office to saw works, and there is a well kept lawn, with asphalt walk down centre and hedgerows in front, making a very pleasing picture. In the establishment employment is given to 70 competent and skillful workmen, while the trade of the house extends throughout the entire Dominion, Michigan and the Western States. They manufacture all kinds of saws, plasterer's trowels, straw knives, etc. A 75-horse power engine supplies the motive power to run the machinery, having two boilers, each 65-horse power. Both Mr. Shurly and Mr. [Jerome Colwell] Dietrich are natives of Rochester, N.Y., where they were in the same line of business before coming here. They have all the pus, go-aheadiveness, enterprise, pluck and ability of their countrymen, and they richly deserve the eminent success they have achieved. They are among Galt's most honoured and esteemed citizens.
