JAMES HORTOP PASSES WAS PIONEER MILLER

Founder of Hortop Milling co. at home of son

James hortop, son of the first superintendent of the Old Mill on the Humber and one all the long line of flour Millers. Passed away Sunday in his 86 year after a short illness at the home of his only son, Frank or Hortop 127 Tyndall Avenue. His father, Henry Hortop came from Devonshire, England, to Whitby, Ont., about a century ago. The family in Devonshire had been millers for seven generations. The owner of the Humber Mill, a Mr. Gamble, sent for Henry Hortop who had given up milling to take charge of the mill. The call of his trade was too strong for him, so he sold his farm and went to the Humber as superintendent of the mill. After a few years the stagnant water of the Humber which was much deeper than now, gave Mr. Hortop the ague and was forced to move to Preston where his son James was born. The latter grew up in the milling trade and was educated at Rockwood Academy where he attended school with Donald Mann, later sir Donald, and James J. Hill, the railroad builders. After the death of his father at Preston, James bought the Eden Mills at Eden and the Elora Mills at Elora. He sold these in 1900 and came to Toronto where he built a mill which still stands on Dufferin Street. This was the foundation of the Hortop Milling Company which carried on business until 5 years ago when the deceased retired. His wife, who died many years ago, was soprano soloist in the old Metropolitan Methodist Church before her marriage when attending college in Toronto.

A daughter at two brothers died some years ago and he leaves his son, Frank, with whom he made his home.
