After his marriage the deceased farmed for some years near New Dundee and later settled in South Easthope. He retired from active work in 1905 and he and his wife had since made their home with their son, Mr. Christian Wagler in South Easthope. Besides his widow he leaves five sons and one daughter, 29 grandchildren and 42 great grand-children. Mr. JOHN BAST TERRIBLY INJURED IN A BLASTING ACCIDENT-TAKEN TO TORONTO GENERAL HOSPITAL

Just before six o'clock on Monday evening Mr. John Bast, of Wellesley, met with a frightful accident. He was blasting a large stone in a field on Mr. Peter B. Jantzi's farm, just north of town and was ramming home the packing when the charge suddenly and unaccountably exploded. His face, eyes and hands were terribly torn and burned and as he was alone in the field at the time he had great difficulty groping his way, in a almost blinded condition, to the house. A rig was at once hitched and he was taken to Dr. Glaister's office, where his wounds were properly attended to. One eye appeared to be hopelessly ruined, but the other, although burned and lacerated, may be saved. The wounds on his hands were also found to be serious and one or more fingers may have to be amputated.

Acting upon Dr. Glaister's advise Mr. Bast started at once for the General Hospital in Toronto where he will receive the most scientific treatment. He was accompanied on the trip by his brother-in-law, Mr. Chris Kennel, who returned on Tuesday evening and stated that one eye and a finger are to he removed today (Wednesday)

Mrs. Bast was in Toronto this week to visit her husband, who has been in the general hospital for the past three weeks since his recent accident. Mr. Bast has made good progress. The eye was not removed and he may possibly partly regain its sight. The wounds in his hand are slowly healing and the amputation of the finger was avoided. His son, Mr. Chris Bast, of New York State, spent Dominion Day here and upon his return he accompanied his mother to Toronto.

Went to live with Uncle Christian Ernest who was farming near Holt Nebraska. There was a drought in the early 80's in Nebraska which prevented them from getting started and they came home.
